Dave Keller Goes to Memphis to Record a Modern Soul Classic Album!
After winning the 2012 award for Best Self-Produced CD at the International Blues Challenge, and reaching #2 on Sirius/XM radio’s blues channel, I’m ready to take my music to the next level. This winter I’ll be heading to Memphis to record an album of future soul classics at Royal Recording Studio, where legends such as Al Green, O.V. Wright, Otis Clay, and Ann Peebles laid down immortal songs in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
Backed by musicians who played on many of the most loved soul songs of all time, I’m primed to make the album of my career. Continuing my successful partnership with producer Bob Perry (Wu-Tang Clan, 50 Cent, Foxy Brown, Brian McKnight), I’ll be recording a batch of new originals, as well as co-writing with some of soul music’s best songwriters, and cherry-picking a few lost soul classics.
The originals I’ve written reflect the changes in my personal life these past few years. There’s a lot of intensity there - sadness, frustration, and pain - tempered with humor and joy. It will be an album to help you through the hard times, and help you celebrate the good times. I am really looking forward to sharing it with you.
This campaign is a way for you to help me make this album, and to receive some really cool stuff in return for your help. Please check out the many different prize packages, and find one that feels right for you. As a supporter, you’ll get the inside scoop on what the recording process looks and sounds like, as I post updates, photos, videos, music, etc. along the way. I am deeply grateful for all the love and support of my fans these many years, and I’m really looking forward to sharing this experience with you!
Remember that this project will only be funded if we meet our goal. If we fall short, it doesn’t happen. (Also, if we fall short, you pay nothing.) So please, if you believe in what I’m trying to do, share this link with your network of friends and family. Thank you :)
Where the Money Goes
The money you pledge will help pay for:
- Recording (paying the engineer for their skills, and for studio time; paying the musicians for their skills and time)
- Mixing (paying the engineer to mix each song so that all the various instruments and vocals sound good together)
- Mastering (paying the mastering engineer to make the CD sound good as a whole, so it jumps out of your speakers)
- Travel expenses (paying for me to get to and from Memphis)
- Design and Layout (paying the graphic artist to make the CD beautiful)
- Manufacturing (paying the factory to produce the physical CDs)
Risks and challenges
I feel confident that this project will be completed as planned. I have previously completed 4 CD projects and stayed within my budgets. This budget is realistic for a project of this scope. I'll be working with Bob Perry, an extremely experienced producer, whom I worked with successfully on my previous CD.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Well, I'm glad you asked. The photographer is the extremely talented, blues-loving, Plattsburgh resident Laura Carbone. Thanks to Laura for making me look good!
Hint: Check out the porch he's playing on in the video :)
Trick question! There isn't one!! Only state capital in the country without one, and proud of it!!
I'll have to scale it WAY back, and certainly won't be going to Memphis.
