THE STORY  (también en español, abajo)

Miami goes way beyond the stereotype of a 'South Beach' town. But even when we think on its Latino population, we tend to overlook cultural heritages that are also an important of this city. We need to highlight them.

As one the youngest major cities in the US, Miami is on the search of its own history. This book, Kendallsuyo, is looking to tell unique stories of the population who migrated from Peru and Andes, and made South Florida (Miami, Broward, Palm Beach) its home. These groups transformed the city in a very special way, not only with its food (i.e. ceviche or potato dishes), but with their cultural traditions, music and habits. These stories deserve to be shared because they can help us to build a more diverse approach of Latino people

The name Kendallsuyo comes from Kendall, a neighborhood located in Southwest Miami -the first important Peruvian settlement in the city; and the suffix "-suyo" comes from the official name of the ancient Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo, "The four-regions state" in Quechua).

Kendallsuyo -the book, gathers stories of hope, chronicles, interviews and historical data. Whether by capturing the life of a traditional scissors dancer from the Peruvian Andes who now lives in Southern Miami, by interviewing a asylee family who stayed together thanks to the language of music, by learning about the efforts of Quechua speakers who are trying to keep alive this endangered language within the new generations of Peruvians, Bolivians or Ecuadorians, or by sharing the dreams of a Bolivian woman who created an Andean dance school so her kids could remain close to their roots. Different topics will be included such as food, migration struggles, music, community, entrepreneurship, architecture, art, scholars, faith, migrants, refugees. Given that when we think about Latinos in the US we tend to generalize  (i.e. we overlook Andean, Amazon or indigenous populations) this book will break new ground and raise critical public awareness.

LA HISTORIA  (for English, please read above)

Risks and challenges

We want this project to stick to its timeline, however it is still a work in progress. While the book is planned to be finished by next summer in order to complete son interviews, research and pictures, and then the edition and publishing process...if we need to extend beyond that we will keep backers well-informed :)
