Why we designed it?
With increasing personal & professional needs, now everyone needs multiple gadgets like smartphones, tablets or PC etc. We do purchase those gadgets to satisfy our needs but keeping all of them charged is a chore, especially during travel. Carrying multiple chargers is no fun and limited AC sockets can be annoying when multiple devices need to be charged.
There are many other chargers present in the market but they are not as smart. SmartQuad is unique because it can detect connected devices and output the optimal amount of current.
Earlier on Kickstarter we delivered a very successful 8-port charger product (OctoFire). OctoFire is a perfect solution for the desk, office, conference room, restaurants, charging stations etc., but in mobility it may not be the best.
We listened to our OctoFire Kickstarter backers and designed SmartQuad based on their feedback. Below are the key differences from OctoFire:
- AC/DC adapter & charger unit are merged into a single unit to make it travel friendly.
- Ports have been reduced from 8 to 4 to make it more affordable, lightweight and compact.
- Per port current has been increased from 2.1 Amps to 2.4 Amps.
We started out by experimenting with intelligent detection of devices to optimized charge current. We also designed AC to DC unit as efficient as possible taking advantage of latest power IC technology. This enabled us to make a design that does not need a fan to cool it even at peak loads.
We have an early prototype ready which is being tested over past couple of months. Now we are ready to create tooling for plastic and electronics.

Risks and challenges
Lessons from our previous OctoFire Kickstarter project has helped us a lot to make right choices for this project. These choices will help us to simplify and expedite the production and fulfillment process for this project.
Today, we have a working final design prototype in our hands. We have been testing them for a while and everything is working as expected. We will now need to transition from our ready to market working prototypes to actual shipping products. We have talked to our component vendors and secured component supply for production. We have an international partnership with a reputed manufacturer. So, the risk factor has been reduced to logistics and any unforeseen issues on production line. These unforeseen issues may take time to resolve, and can cause delay in delivery. However, we are confident that we will deliver on time.
