The purpose of this project is to provide readers with a serialized young adult novel, titled Showdown at the Burnt Creek Café. The story will have ten chapters, which will be converted into various e-reader formats and sent out at weekly intervals, starting in September.
Last summer, I experimented with writing a serialized novel through a Kickstarter supported project and found it exhilarating. Writing and releasing Showdown in serialized form will allow me to continue this grand experiment.
For an idea of the type of writing the weekly chapters will provide, you can go to the following link, where I've posted the Prologue to Showdown at the Burnt Creek Café.
In addition, my vastly talented cousin, Tanner Lex Jones, is once again going to be a creative collaborator with me by providing a soundtrack to the story as it unfolds. For an idea of the wonders that he can create, you can listen to the Once Upon a Fjord soundtrack, or hear the song that goes with the Showdown at the Burnt Creek Café Prologue here:
As a school teacher (Creative Writing), I have a few weeks in the summer where I could write this planned novel.
This would mean, of course, that I would not have as much time to do other menial jobs to raise money so that my family can survive until school starts again, which is where your contributions come in.
If this endeavor in writing is something that you feel would be of value to you, then please contribute what you can (no more than what you would for a normal book, though, it's not made out of gold or anything!). Or if you want to encourage your kids to read, or are looking for a way to legitimize your purchase of an e-reader, those are more reasons to contribute. Or, finally, perhaps you don't care about this project, but you would do anything to keep Marty Reeder from painting houses all summer long ... well then, your contribution can even achieve that!
Kickstarter works as an all-or-nothing fundraiser. That means that whatever amount you pledge, you will not pay unless there are enough pledges to meet the goal amount. Of course, you want to pay (right?!), so make sure you get as many of your friends to come and support the project as possible!
Risks and challenges
Because I have already successfully completed and fulfilled a similar project from last year, I do not anticipate any problems this year. A possible delay in the release of some of the chapters seems to be the most likely hang up, but I do not anticipate the release of the book to go beyond the November deadline.
Also, Tanner receives no pay for his labor of love, so even though he consistently provided songs for each chapter last year, his contributions should not be considered part of the product in case some unforeseen circumstance prevents him from completing the novel soundtrack.
