The purpose of this project is to provide readers with a serialized novel this summer, titled Once Upon a Fjord. The story will have ten chapters which will be written and then sent out each week of this summer, starting the 1st week of June.
In order to get an idea of the type of writing those chapters will provide, you can go to the following link, where I've posted the Prologue to Once Upon a Fjord.
I am fascinated by the idea of serialized novels. As an avid reader, I have been enthralled by the works of Dickens, Hugo, Dumas, Dostoevsky, Twain, Verne, and Wodehouse among many others, all of whom wrote novels which first appeared in public one chapter at a time.
Since reading these great works, I wondered at the virtual disappearance of novel serialization. Clearly changing media made it unfeasible in the newspaper market. Yet, as soon as I got my Kindle, and realized that, besides books, I could also receive daily, weekly, and/or monthly updates from magazines, newspapers, and blogs, I began to wonder if this was a new opening for serialized novels.
As a writer, I was intrigued by this challenge. I have mulled over several story ideas in my mind, and finally settled on one that I think would be a great start to the experiment of a new era of serialized novels.
Because I am a school teacher (Creative Writing), that left me 10 weeks in the summer that I could potentially write ten chapters of what I feel would be a great, escapist young adult adventure. Readers of the novel would receive a new chapter each week, with most of the writing being done in real time.
This would mean, of course, that I would not have as much time to do other menial jobs to raise money so that my family can survive until school starts again, which is where your contributions come in.
If this endeavor in writing is something that you feel would be of value to you, then please contribute what you can. If not, please find someone else that you think would be interested and let them know. If you want to encourage your kids to read over the summer, or you are looking for a way to legitimize your purchase of an e-reader, then please contribute. If it is something that you think would give good advertising for your group or company, then look at the options of contributing $50 to $100-plus to see about sponsoring a chapter, or $25 or more for acknowledgment in the final e-book version at the end of the summer.
Or, finally, if you don't care about this project, but you would do anything to keep Marty Reeder from painting houses all summer long, then your contribution can even achieve that!
