Hello Kickstarter:  My name is Arlette Cárdenes, Co-Founder and Music Director of the Culver City Chamber Orchestra. (CCCO)  We have been in existence since 1997, and we are a non-profit 501c3.    This year is an auspicious year as we are celebrating 20 years of existence and we are celebrating Culver City’s Centennial Year.  We are in need to raise $4,000 for our Centennial Concert scheduled to be performed on May 27, 2017 in Culver City.

Our Young Talented Youth are at stake!!! We are in the midst of a difficult financial year.  As the orchestra is pleased to present concerts featuring young talented soloists, we have been unable to fund this year’s fabulous 20th Anniversary concert and Culver City Centennial Concert!!! We had scheduled 3 talented young musicians ages 15-18 to perform with us in October, but we have had to postpone.  It is our mission to always present 2 concerts every season featuring young talented musicians so that they would have the opportunity to perform with a live orchestra.

My most crucial and most important avenue is that all kids should have the opportunity to perform with a live orchestra at least twice in their formative years in order to feel the warmth of an audience, to feel the pressure, the anxiety, and the joy of people in front of them with a live audience.

Very important, the kids are missing these opportunities this year with us because we are unable to give them the stage opportunity that we have been offering in the last 19 years.   Competitions organizers such as the MTAC (Music Teachers Associations) have been calling to see if we’re going to participate with them this year.  Sadly, I told them no.  They then cancelled their competition.   We receive several resumes in the mail on a daily bases asking if their child could play with us, and sadly I have not responded to them as of yet.

Here are some samples of our work with our young soloists in past years:

¨      One concert we performed in the 1980’s was Mozart No. 40 Symphony and a Piano Concerto, the soloist played only the first movement, then Papa Mozart (Leopold) came out to talk to the young audience in period costume.  He explained what year we are in, what Wolfgang Amadeus wrote, when he wrote them, and why he wrote them at that time.  Then he spoke about Amadeus Mozart his genius son, for a short time, and we then performed Mozart Piano concert K 12 with Nicolas King age 10.  Papa Mozart then explained specifically how Amadeus was considered such a genius. And all of the music he wrote in his short lifetime, since he died when he was only 35. This concert was a FREE concert so we had a full house and the response was well received with our period costume and our presentation of Leopold & Amadeus Mozart.

¨      We have also collaborated with the MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California-West Los Angeles Branch) for four years and we have featured several very talented musicians from ages 9-14 and 15-18 under the direction of Sharon Collins, Co-president and Nancy Fierro-Co-President.  The winners are chosen after they have auditioned at the competition one month prior to concert date and after the judges have decided, the result is usually 3-4 student winners are chosen. These young performers are the new generation of outstanding achievement in their field.

I created this Kickstarter to help raise funds for our two Young Artists’ Concert.  The funds we raise from Kickstarter will be used for:

1-     Orchestra Musicians Pay

Here are our most recent programs we have presented:    One of our biggest assets is our Music Education program.  We were delighted that we could in the past present 3 concerts this last year all geared to children and young artists’.

1-     April 10, 2016 4:00 pm-- Family Concert Series presented two young musicians who were hand-picked to perform with CCCO.  These young musicians are outstanding at their young age and are forming great potential as musicians.  Vera Wang 11 and Usha Kapoor, 18 performed wonderfully and were each given standing ovations.  This is what music is all about!!

2-     December 14, 2015 4:00 pm   Peter and the Wolf returns to Culver City!!! Alongside the Collenette School of Dancing with children as young as 6-17 dancing to the music of Peter and the Wolf. In addition to the children dancing, we were delighted to have KUSC host, Alan Chapman narrate the story of Peter and the Wolf to make the performance perfect.

WHY WE NEED YOU!       The Culver City Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 and the City of Culver City was incorporated in 1917. During these 100 years Culver City has never had a formal professional orchestra.  We are the first orchestra to represent Culver City.  We are 100% indebted to making music a fundamental importance for all children and they should have the opportunity to hear and see a first rate orchestra in their neighboring  city.  The young musicians are the future of classical music and it is our mission to see to it that they can flourish as much as they can if given the opportunity.  We need funding to help us with this project.  Your dollars will secure our mission to succeed in giving all young talented musicians the opportunity to play with our organization.

Your Support     This is your opportunity to bring Culver City Chamber Orchestra to be a major Chamber Orchestra on Westside of Los Angeles County.  If this season is properly funded it has the potential to have a monumental impact on the lives of our young musicians and young people who would otherwise not have this musical experience.   In order to make that happen, we need your help.  With your support, we are aiming to raise $4,000 on Kickstarter over the next 2 months. Please consider a contribution as little or as much as you are able, and in return we will reward you with concerts driven with young musicians’ performing in front of you (the audience).

Risks and challenges

There are always risks in anything we do and with anything we plan.
The first risk is not raising enough funds to cover the cost of these concerts. We hope this Kickstarter campaign will cover these costs, and anticipate success. However, to prevent the alternative, please encourage friends and families to donate!! Your help will go a long way.
Secondly, we are extremely proud of our organization and have planned this out very carefully and have depended on musical friends, family, and the community to bring this organization to life. While we have received a few grants they all have been minimal and don’t carry through all of our concerts. Without passionate musicians and students this organization would not be around at all and Culver City and its surrounding areas would not have a professional organization. We are truly thrilled by this opportunity and we are hopeful that Kickstarter will be a great success!!
Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read our Kickstarter page and giving to our organization for our special Young Artists’ Concerts. We look forward to hearing from you!!
