In a proper sense, the idea of this book was born in 2013, but the process behind it started years before that. As the only one on my fathers side of the family without freckles, I – Jonas Carmhagen, the photographer behind this project – have given the (absence of) fascinating little brown spots a great deal of thought and attention throughout my life. Not only is the mere existence of freckles an enchanting story: the history, explanatory factors — biological and environmental — and most of all the people behind them makes it a lovely feature worth exploring again and again. But how does one create something new based on this natural phenomenon, and still keep it classic and with a pure tone? In my teens, I found photography to be the perfect way for me to channel my creativity. Determined to become a professional photographer I attended Gamleby School of Photography, and is now proud to be a Stockholm based full time photographer.
In nothing but sheer daylight, over one hundred people have been photographed for this book. Among many, you will find the mother, daughter, model, waitress, father, son, lawyer, student, brother, sister, CEO, pensioner, businessman, cousin and grandparent. Many of these beautiful people have grown up hating their freckles, but later come to love them. I want to tell everyone — freckled or not — that you are beautiful precisely the way you are created, and to not bother spending time thinking otherwise. This project is a reminder of that
Never before has an art project encompassed such a concentrated yet playful insight into the freckled people among us. With these pictures, it is my wish to prove that simplicity and masterpieces as well as perfection and imperfection are not by necessity opposites of each other.
With your support, I hope to share this story with you! Please continue to support the work by pledging and sharing. The Kickstarter time line is only 21 days. We estimate that the book will be printed and ready to distribute in the beginning of December (just in time for Christmas! ;) ). Thank you!
The photos in the Kickstarter are just a sample of what will be in the books. Many unpublished images will appear.
We chose format of the book based on our vertical images. We want the images to be as enhanced as possible so we spared no expenses in using this big format.
We carefully selected a high quality paper that is called Scandia 2000. The matt-quality and high opacity will create an astounding feeling of the photographs. Scandic 2000 is PEFC-certified. We choose to produce the book in Sweden, made from Swedish trees, to minimize the environmental impact.
The book has a hardcover scope. The cover and the spine will be foliated with a copper-like color.
