About this project
WOW. We are so thrilled and grateful! Thank you to all of our Kickstarter backers for your contributions, for sharing our campaign, and for all of your support and kindness throughout. The success of this campaign is proof positive: there has never been a better time to make this film, and we know it can make a difference.

AWESOME NEWS: An anonymous donor has come forward to help us give back to the cats! They want us to far exceed our goal, so our film gets finished faster. They've offered something amazing!
Our anonymous donor will be purchasing a week's worth of food for a cat for every $100 we raise over our goal!
We asked and they've said there is no maximum. The more we raise, the more food they will buy.
Thanks to our wonderful community of supporters, we made our initial Kickstarter goal. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thanks also to our partners and all of those who contributed rewards and/or shared our campaign.
What will we do with additional funds raised?
- Hire a composer to add music to enhance the emotional beats of the film, helping general audiences connect with our story
- Pay for Film Festival submission and travel fees, so we can take our film to the exhibition venues where we will meet our distributors
- Do some additional filming with NYC rescuers who work with the neediest cats in the toughest neighborhoods
- Color correction and sound mix, so we can create a final cut of the film.
Meeting our goal means we can fast-track a rough cut of our film later this year, in time to submit to important film festivals. Exceeding our goal will help us make our film even better, and finish it faster, allowing us to expedite getting it released and available for a public who needs to know about this animal welfare crisis, and in the hands of rescue groups to screen in their communities.

At the heart of THE CAT RESCUERS is a major animal welfare crisis - a million abandoned and feral cats living on the streets of New York City.
Because the city can’t handle the problem, hundreds of cat-loving activists have taken to the streets to implement TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), a technique that, along with adoptions, can humanely control and reduce the population.
THE CAT RESCUERS is about four of these street-smart, dedicated volunteers.
For the last three years we’ve been filming Claire, Sassee, Stu and Tara - all rescuing in Brooklyn where the problem has exploded in the last decade. Like first responders, they hit the streets any time of the day or night to save cat lives. To do this heroic work they’ve each made personal and financial sacrifices, but their love of animals has kept them going.
This is a story taking place in cities and towns all over the world.
And that's why we're making this film – so that animal lovers everywhere can learn not just about the problem but the solutions.
First, some facts.
- Cats can get pregnant at four months old and can have as many as three litters per year. In 7 years, one unspayed female and her offspring can result in over 370,000 street cats!
- Most adult ferals can’t adjust to indoor life so they're hard to adopt, but their kittens can be socialized and placed in loving homes.
- Alley Cat Allies, a global champion for the humane treatment of cats, estimates that 70% of cats who enter the shelter system are euthanized. When it comes to feral cats the number is virtually 100%.
The key to preventing this vicious cycle of suffering is TNR.
TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, Return. It's the humane and proven way to control feral and abandoned cat populations. That’s why it’s endorsed by the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the US.
Here's what rescuers practicing TNR do:
- Humanely trap a cat
- Get it spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped, the universal symbol that a cat has been neutered,
- Assess the cat, and if it’s adoptable, help find it a forever home
- Return the unadoptable ferals to their colony to live out their days peacefully.
Rescuing cats requires patience, compassion, ingenuity and sheer tenacity. Every day the rescuers deal with problems like these.
Just imagine... a suffering cat trying to survive in spite of an arrow embedded in her face by an unknown human assailant.
Tara, one of our rescuers, managed to trap her and race her to the emergency vet, who saved her life.
Three newborn kittens were tossed into a garbage can in Bed-Stuy and left to die. A rescuer intervened, nursing the kittens and getting them vaccinated and adopted.
A feral adult female evaded rescuers until she was finally coaxed into a trap, spayed and returned to live out the rest of her days in peace, no longer bringing unwanted kittens into the world.
We need your help to finish THE CAT RESCUERS so that, in addition to showing in theaters and on digital platforms like iTunes and Netflix, it will be available to rescue organizations to raise awareness and promote change in their own communities. And it will be a tool to get our lawmakers to finally change policy.
Let's make it happen!
PROUD BACKER PHOTO: After you back the campaign, get a custom made photo from THE CAT RESCUERS that features you or your kitty cat(s). We'll add it to our Facebook album of backer kitty pics and we'll send you a copy you can share on your social media. Upload your photo here: bit.ly/proudbacker
The directors of THE CAT RESCUERS are both longtime cat lovers and supporters of rescue groups. Steve and his wife Helen have TNR’d 35 cats on their block in Bay Ridge, and currently take care of a colony of 12. There haven't been any new kittens in three years!
Your contribution comes with the knowledge that you’re helping inspire much-needed community support for abandoned and community cats around the world. Beyond that, you can also choose from some pretty great rewards, thanks to the generosity of many cat-loving retailers partnering with us!
You can add an autographed THE CAT RESCUERS DVD or Blu-Ray to your collection once it’s released! This cover art is subject to change.
Keep in mind that we're still finishing the film, so we estimate that the DVD and Blu-Rays will be available in September 2018, but a date like this can be hard to predict with certainty. It might be a little earlier or a little later.
We're raising funds on Kickstarter so we can create a rough cut of the film to submit to film festivals, which will get the film in front of distributors and other stakeholders.
Kickstarter is all-or-nothing which means if we don't meet our goal, we don't get to keep any of the contributions.
25%: Finish Filming We have a handful of key interviews and scenes left to shoot (including with some city city officials and animal rights activists), and with your help we can pay for the gear and the crew to pull it off.
10%: Aerial photography We will collect some awe-inspiring drone shots of cat colonies across Brooklyn, to show the scope of the issue we’re dealing with
50%: Editing We're ready to start cutting three years of amazing footage into a cohesive and compelling story of cat rescuing superheroes. And once we have a rough cut we can submit it to film festivals!
15%: Graphics and Animation An experienced artist will ensure that important facts and concepts about animal welfare can be communicated to a wide audience in an informative and entertaining fashion.
If we are lucky enough to exceed our goal, we have some exciting plans to announce as well.
Though it takes place in Brooklyn, we know our film will resonate with viewers the world over.
STEP ONE: The film will play at film festivals here and abroad, building our audience and attracting the attention of distributors.
STEP TWO: After securing distribution, the film will be released in select theaters across the US.
STEP THREE: After a theatrical run, THE CAT RESCUERS will be available on digital platforms like iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.
STEP FOUR: The film will be distributed on home video (DVD/Blu-Ray) and broadcast television. It will be made available for a reduced rate to rescue organizations to support advocacy and fundraising.
But all of that can only happen if we meet our Kickstarter goal, so we need you! If we do not reach our goal, backers are not charged and we don’t receive any of the money raised.
We wouldn’t be able to make this film without the support of so many partner organizations. We’re delighted to acknowledge them here and below.

Risks and challenges
We, the directors of THE CAT RESCUERS have 40+ years of filmmaking experience and success between us. That’s why we were able to embark on this passion project in the first place - because it is a film we were determined to make.
And now that the film is 90% shot, we have one last hill to climb before we can finish it and make it a powerful tool for change. Your financial support now is the final step in getting us there. Regardless of how much we raise, we are fully committed to finishing this film this year. In our minds, that can’t come soon enough.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
