Project Description:

Unísono is a cultural arts festival initiated by the Resurrection Project as  public forum for Chicago artists, poets, musicians and local businesses. The event attracts thousands of people from across Chicago and it will celebrate its third year anniversary. The 2013 festival will be on August 24, 2013 and will feature 10 bands, educational workshops for students, art and crafts workshops for children, art viewing with local artists, and it will feature a community market with local vendors similar to the typical family markets found across Latin America.

Unísono takes place on Pilsen's own zócalo, or public square, at the corner of 18th Street and Paulina. Each year, the neighborhood hosts events on the zócalo to attract neighbors as well as visitors. The public square is also the location of La Casa, a Multi-University Student Housing facility for Chicago-area college students, and it is just steps from the CTA Pink Line.

What is the money for?
Staging this all-day festival requires months of preparation and many up-front expenses including staging and rental fees, city permits, licenses, insurance and other costs for decorations, materials, marketing and logistics. These expenses will come to more than $20,000 in 2013, and since the event is free to all who come, we have to cover the costs with donations from people like you.

Significance of Festival to the Community.
Unísono is a grassroots idea with the purpose of uniting the residents, businesses and community organizations for a diverse cultural experience. Our aim is for the Zócalo to be reminiscent of these Latin American plazas via cultural programming, as well as to create an open community space that will allow local artists, businesses and musicians to stregthen their neighboorhood, and promote unity and social equality.  Unísono also sheds light and brings awareness to the social issues that affect our community. Every year a social justice theme is selected, and Unísono artists, organizations, participating businesses and media outlets collectively raise awareness and promote this social justice theme and issue. In 2012 the theme was immigrant rights, and as a result Deferred Action Workshops were held for undocumented dreamer students during the festival. We also see this festival as a good economic engine that will attract people across Chicago and beyond to visit  Pilsen.

Risks and challenges

The origins of this festival come from The Resurrection Project, a local community development organization in the Pilsen community. For more than twenty years, the Resurrection Project has focused it's mission on providing affordable housing to underserved communities. The mission has expanded to include assisting local businesses grow in the community in the hopes of strengthening the economic development of Pilsen and other communities alike. Out of these efforts arose a new business association called the Greater Pilsen Economic Development Association that is working on creating a new business vision for the Pilsen community. This associations is comprised of local business owners, institutions, and organizations who have come together with the Resurrection Project to support the Unísono festival as a social enterprise to strengthen the Pilsen community as a whole. We strongly believe that the progressive development of our community is tied to its Mexican Culture and Heritage, while embracing diversity. The name Unisono means Unison, referring to a collective of sounds and voices coming together as one, our tagline is One Sound One Village to better illustrate this vision; its secondary meaning is Unity.

Like other cultural endeavors we will face a great deal of competition, as there are a great deal of summer festivals in Chicago, however we strongly believe that our festival stands out in that is grass roots driven and aims to embrace diversity, and address social challenges via arts and culture. The combination, of art, music, culture, and community collaboration and your help via KickStarter is what will help us overcome these challenges.
