Hello! I'm Richard Dean Johnson, a writer and motion picture producer from Austin, Texas.
Several years ago the story for Saving The Farm downloaded itself into my consciousness my first instinct was to create a screenplay. I then came to realize that the story needed to be written without the constraints of screen minutes, so that due attention could be given to the the depth of each of the individual relationships in the story.
The manuscript has undergone several revisions already, including a well received focus group reading with a book club in Houston. Now I'm raising money to hire a professional editor and publish the book in both digital and physical hardback book formats.
This is where I am asking for your help in funding the next step of my adventure.
Five relationship challenged couples are invited to a marriage counselling workshop to launch a new book entitled “Saving The Farm” by author and motivational speaker, John Robert Stuart. Stuart's nephew, Ashley Adams, is hired to make the documentary DVD to accompany the book. Ash invites his long-time girlfriend, Melanie, to be his assistant. The workshop is held at "The Happy Life" bed and breakfast retreat center owned by a retired farmer, Walter Clark, and his wife, Hilde. Throughout the workshop marriages are transformed more through the practical council of the Walter and Hilde Clark than the impractical, imperfected theories imparted by the facilitator, Bob Stuart. In the end, Ash and Mel have to make a tough decision about the future of their own relationship, stay together or live separate lives focused on their careers.

Where the Funds Will Go
Your backing helps me do two things: it helps me make the book better, and it helps me get the book into the hands of the right publisher. I do have the right publisher in mind, but it will take resources to get the book ready for submission. It also means your support is crucial to making Saving the Farm a success.
More specifically, your backing helps me with the following:
line and copy editing
allow printing in bulk to bring down the per-book costs
purchase of fonts and other design assets
obtaining ISBN numbers
paying registration fees
costs associated with getting listed in various online bookstores
envelopes, packing materials, postage
I'll be detailing the entire process via backer-only updates along the way.
I thank you for supporting my book!
Credits: the background video music is "Coming Home" by Peter Kater from his album "Piano" which is an amazing album and has been my musical inspiration while writing the book.
Risks and challenges
I have worked hard to minimize the risk in this writing project. I've focus-grouped the story and it was well receive and I got great feedback, both negative and positive, from the group. I've listened closely and worked to incorporate the feedback honestly into the text.
The core of the story is written and the structure of the book is complete. With your support I will engage the best editor I can afford to analyze the text provide traditional editorial feedback. I will publish and deliver rewards as indicated. The true risk comes after the book has been written and the rewards have all been delivered: Will it find a mass audience in the publishing channels? Will the story and writing strike a chord with enough readers so that they are compelled to tell their friends about the book? That is the risk faced by every writer: Will my words find an audience? I am "Betting the Farm" that the story will resonate with you and that you will recommend it to at least one friend along the way and they in turn recommend it to someone else (starting with my Kickstarter campaign!). Thank you for supporting me in "Saving the Farm". -- Richard Dean JohnsonLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
