My initial inspiration in opening Beacon Sound (in a city full of record stores, no less) was born out of frustration with the fact that I had to buy so much of the music that I loved online and then have it shipped from overseas. I wanted to try and find that sweet spot between running a general interest record shop and satisfying the local demand for contemporary electronic/modern classical/experimental music. I also wanted to bring a smart design sensibility to the table and develop Beacon into a cultural force as much as a mere storefront selling records. A tall order? Maybe, but so far things have gone better than I ever imagined.
Which brings us to Beacon Sound, The Label. I decided to get started earlier this year by pressing three cassettes by three different artists (Apartment Fox from Portland, Isla De Los Estados from Buenos Aires, and Lucrecia Dalt from Barcelona/Berlin) as a sort of statement of intent. My goal with the label is to take the curatorial spirit of the shop and translate it into a roster of compelling, forward-thinking artists from Portland and around the world.
And that's where you come in! On October 25th and 26th Beacon Sound is hosting a gathering to celebrate the birth of the label. It's happening at the Sou Wester on the coast just north of Astoria. Over the course of those two nights Grouper, Rauelsson, Peter Broderick, and Gabriel Saloman will perform and there will also be a spooky-themed late-night party featuring a DJ set by Liz Harris (AKA Grouper) and a live set by Apartment Fox.
After the Sou Wester weekend Peter Broderick and Gabriel Saloman will be decamping to Type Foundry studio to record with Jason Powers, audio engineer extraordinaire. The recordings that come out of this musical coupling will be released as the first Beacon Sound album-length vinyl. I, for one, am intrigued to see what they come up with. They each come from different musical backgrounds but have ended up treading similar and complementary ground. Check out their bios below!
The first 200 copies of the record will be on clear vinyl and will come with a special booklet that will document the Sou Wester weekend.
Note as of October 7th: I added a second reward category for the basic pledge of $25 (for the record and booklet) that includes shipping specifically tailored to those of you living in Canada and Mexico. Moving forward, I'll be able to adjust quantities between the two versions of this reward as needed. Questions? Just drop me a line.
Peter Broderick is a multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Carlton, Oregon and played with Portland groups such as Horse Feathers and Loch Lomond. In 2007 he was invited to work with Danish group Efterklang (currently signed to the seminal 4AD label) and moved to Berlin. Over the course of the last six years he has released several acclaimed solo albums on labels such as Type and Erased Tapes, collaborated with the likes of Machinefabriek and Nils Frahm, and traveled the world with Efterklang, who debuted their most recent album Piramida with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the iconic Sydney Opera House on May 26 2012.
Vancouver-based Gabriel Saloman was one half (with Pete Swanson) of influential noise duo Yellow Swans. Their prolific run of albums, EP's, collaborations, and world tours culminated with the incredible Going Places on Type Records. He is also an accomplished artist and has been exhibited at the Walker Center, California College Of The Arts, and the Manifesta biennial in Murcia, Spain. His excellent debut solo album 'Adhere' (on Berlin label Miasmah) has garnered rave reviews.
Risks and challenges
The primary challenge that I'd foresee would be around ensuring the highest quality production possible. And that's a challenge I enjoy.
There's also the question of vinyl pressing plant schedules, but that's why I chose March 2014 as the prospective delivery date (planning for a three-month turnaround).
