About this project

As shown in the video, becoming a beekeeper/entrepreneur changed Anthony's life.  There are life lessons and rewards too numerous to count in a beehive.  Anthony is now 15 and we have decided to take his business, Anthony's Beehive, to the next level.  In September, we will open "The Bee Store" with a mission to secure Anthony's future, help the bees, and help other disadvantaged youth to change their lives by pursuing an unlikely passion.  The store will set aside 1% of all sales to help targeted youth own and operate their own beehive(s) and beehive based businesses.  Additionally, the 1% will be leveraged by providing equipment at our cost and classes/mentoring at no cost.  Over the years, we have worked with numerous non-profit corporations, which will be partners in selecting youth to participate.  Access to youth-in-need and an effective, non-biased selection process will be critical to this projects effectiveness.  Participating youth will be from a wide variety of backgrounds, with one thing in common.  All have challenges to overcome, ranging from disabilities, to economic hardship, to the communities that they live in.  Owning their own beehive(s) will help provide dignity, entrepreneurial and employment skills, and economic opportunities.  Anthony's Beehive will provide technical support, marketing, packaging, processing, and other essential assistance.  Additionally, project beneficiaries will be able to access equipment at the new store including the certified kitchen, extracting & bottling equipment, and beehive assembly tools.  We are deeply excited about this new venture.  As sales grow, Anthony's future will be secured and numerous youth will have the potentially life-changing opportunity to be come beekeepers and entrepreneurs.

Risks and challenges

Any entrepreneurial venture comes with risk, but Anthony's Beehive is well suited to overcome challenges since this is an established business being taken to the next level. Anthony's dad, Tony, is uniquely qualified. He has been a beekeeper for 15 years and developed his retail skills while working for Home Depot when they were laying the foundation (20 stores to 150 stores) to become one of the world's most successful retailers. He has a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and a Master's in Agricultural Education. Tony has worked with numerous youth groups and currently teaches high school in the mornings. He is a key player in the Kansas City area with Good Natured Family Farms, a pioneer in the Local Food movement. This position gives in access and expertise in the marketing of locally produced foods. The major challenges to be mowed down by this skill set are working with youth, running a business, marketing, beekeeping, realistic vision, and having/creating critical relationships in the community.
