My 12 year old daughter has taken after her father and has a love for comic books and animation. She has been my "Comic Con Buddy" for all the Salt Lake Comic Con events for the past several years, twice a year.
Recently, I have been put into contact with some people in the comic book industry. I have been working with them to show them how easily they can market and get their comics into the spotlight if done properly and on a timeline.
My daughter and I started thinking about doing a comic book of our own and we began to brainstorm ideas. Powers, concept ideas, looks of the hero as well as sidekicks, other important characters and of course antagonists or villains. Our hero is an adrenaline junkie high school track and field star who gains some amazing abilities including being able to run super fast. Later on she realizes that with a special suit she can launch herself into the air and with her speed behind her she can glide great distances.
Her villains/antagonists in the comic are personifications of challenges that our youth face today. Peer pressure, self image, bullying, etc. The hero will not only try not to fight them, but due to her caring heart she will try to work with the antagonist and help 'reform' them.
This won't be just your normal, everyday comic book. This will be a comic angle that we can help kids in school who are struggling with these issues. We could tour schools, talk about the comic and help teens all over the country.
With my marketing background I have been pitching this comic to celebrities in attempts to have these celebrities as guests in the comic. For those of you that can remember the old school Scooby - Doo cartoons that had the guest appearances from such names as Don Knotts, The Globetrotters, Sonny & Cher as well as many others. I have recently obtained a verbal consent from a popular band that have been recently nominated for an iHeartRadio Music Award, two Teen Choice awards, two Billboard Music awards, and an American Music award!
With this new consent there is a renewed challenge to publish this book as soon as possible and get it into their hands to sell through their channels as well as get our book into the public hands as well.
The purpose of this money is to be able to get this book out of the brains of my 12 year old daughter (who is the writer) and into the hands of the public.
Money will be used for the following:
Copyright lawyers to ensure intellectual property stays with us and contracts for celebrities and artists are clearly agreed upon. Artists (Cover art, line work, color, lettering), Page layout and design, Printing and finally distribution.
Risks and challenges
Challenges for this project will be finding qualified artists and designers to put the book into publishing. I have already been in touch with several artists and am trying to negotiate pricing and timelines with them without having the legal part behind it to keep the project protected.
Publishing the books will take a little time to complete orders and find reasonable pricing to be able to fulfill all the needs of the backers and to begin selling the project. I have plans in place to give the band an initial order of 500 books to push with an alternate cover for exclusive collectors. I plan on also doing a run of 500 with the standard cover for distribution channels such as face to face marketing at Comic Cons and using online media methods to sell the product.
Comic Book is still in the initial stages of the story and will take a little time to finalize the writing, but the concept will be 4 issues with the band and then after the 4th book is published there will be a 4 book anthology with an alternate cover as well for those wanting to collect the set.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
