UPDATE! With just under a week to go, Upper Michigan native and NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci has arrived to rally the team and push us forward. Lets Go Northbound!
We can't wait to introduce actress Molly Leland (Greys Anatomy, Law & Order:SVU, Ozark) in NORTHBOUND: Season 3, but we need your pledges to bring her to Michigan and bring our grassroots project to the next level. Watch her testimonial below!
Actor and Podcast pioneer Dan Klass will join our cast as Dr. Stephen Trepanier, one of the key figures behind the cataclysmic event that forms the foundations of the entire series.
NORTHBOUND is a post-apocalyptic web series set in a North American wilderness soon after a mysterious event called The Cataclysm killed millions in a single day. Seasons 1 & 2 of the series are free to view exclusively on Seeka TV, and through their apps on Roku, Apple TV, iOS, Google Play, and Amazon. From the beginning, our team has devoted itself to producing NORTHBOUND in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and aspire to make a lasting cultural and economic impact on the region.
When complete, all 3 seasons of NORTHBOUND will serve as the prelude to a feature film titled NORTHSTAR. Taken as a whole, THE NORTHSTAR SAGA tells the story of a father, his comatose daughter, and a world-altering mystery lying at the heart of The Cataclysm. This journey will take father and daughter across a new America, where they will work to rebuild their lives under the looming threat of an authoritarian regime that is building strength in the East.
Since premiering on Seeka TV in October 2017, NORTHBOUND has consistently topped the 10 most-viewed shows on the site. Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support from the Kickstarter Community in 2016 and our creative family in Michigan, we have reached a crucial turning point. Season 3 will close out the NORTHBOUND era, and lead directly into the opening scenes of NORTHSTAR. There has never been a better time for YOU to come on board.
Season 1 begins 3 Months after The Cataclysm and follows a former marine named Alex as he retreats with his comatose daughter Crystal into a post-apocalyptic wilderness. Over the course of this first year, Alex encounters two emergent groups: a militia nicknamed The Firewalkers, and a much graver threat called Allied Command North America. Alex soon discovers The Firewalkers are supplying Allied Command with comatose "sleepers", much like his daughter, for a still unknown purpose. After narrowly surviving these events, Alex and Crystal are saved by The Infinity Group, a small band of refugees led by a Minister named Wallace.
Season 2 resumes 18 Months after The Cataclysm and finds Alex taking on more leadership within the ranks of Wallace's Infinity Group. His growing bond with the Minister is tested when he helps rescue a sleeper from Allied Command captivity. Blaming The Firewalkers for this incident, Allied Command coerces the militia leaders to retrieve their lost asset at all costs. Outnumbered and outgunned on two flanks, The Infinity Group is caught in the middle of a power struggle that could ignite into a violent turf-war.
Season 3 picks up a few days following Season 2’s cliffhanger ending. Reeling from an assassination attempt, Alex ponders whether to go off on his own with Crystal, or lead an Infinity Group offensive to snuff The Firewalkers out once and for all. Allied Command however, has decided to take a firmer hand in the region, forcing all three factions into a decisive clash that will end the NORTHBOUND series and open the door to NORTHSTAR.
NORTHBOUND is produced entirely in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a geologically striking region that borders Wisconsin and America’s Great Lakes. Series co-creators Seth and Nathan Anderson grew up in the area and decided to craft a futuristic survival story around the forests, mines, and lakes that inspired their creative development. Each NORTHBOUND episode opens with an image of Upper Michigan; a primal landscape that will continue to define the ongoing NORTHSTAR SAGA.
As co-creator Seth Anderson puts it, "Michigan is the project. You can't separate NORTHBOUND from where it's made. When you stand in the forests here, you are surrounded by eons of history, which is both inspiring and humbling. It felt like the right place for a story about starting over, and the proper backdrop for a new mythology."
NORTHBOUND is the brainchild of brothers Seth and Nathan Anderson, and producer/writer Jason Hagen. The trio has made films together for over a decade under the banner, Lullskull Ltd. After cutting their teeth with a series of shorts, they decided to make their first feature film concept, NORTHSTAR in their hometown of Iron Mountain, Michigan. Soon after the Andersons began researching the feasibility of mounting a major motion picture production in Northern Michigan, executive producer Gary M. Bettman joined the team, bringing his 20 years of experience as a feature film producer to the project.
Season 1 of NORTHBOUND came about after word spread of the plans to make NORTHSTAR in the area. A local group of creatives, led by NORTHBOUND actor Nate Alwine approached the team about making some videos that could serve as a "proof of concept" for potential investors. The result was a promotional video that evolved into full-fledged episodes in 2015. This new project, now called NORTHBOUND, was exclusively acquired by Minneapolis-based distributor Seeka TV in 2017, and later sponsored by national beverage brand Rip It Energy Fuel. Since then, this early collaboration between Lullskull Ltd. and a core team of talented individuals based in Upper Michigan has solidified into the current braintrust behind Seasons 1-3.
In addition to a talented regional cast that expanded in Season 2, the final season will add Los Angeles-based actor Dan Klass, New York-based actress Molly Leland, and Upper Peninsula-based actress Alisha Mondloch. Dan, Molly and Ali will debut in Season 3 as a set of characters that will go on to play pivotal roles in NORTHSTAR, and their presence will only help to further bridge the gap between the web series and feature film.
Since 2014, our team has grown from 5 to nearly 50. Many of these individuals work on a volunteer basis and demonstrate a can-do spirit that has overcome many of the obstacles that typically keep projects like NORTHBOUND from happening outside of Hollywood. The result is something that wasn't possible until recently: an ongoing media project with a potential worldwide reach that is produced efficiently outside of a major media market. Your contribution can only help us cement our commitment to making films in Upper Michigan, thereby opening the potential for new creative industry jobs that would not exist otherwise.
Our journey began with a feature film idea that led the three of us back home to Midwest. Along the way, we found the community we needed to help us get even closer to that dream. Now with Season 3, NORTHSTAR is within view, and we've set 3 goals:
- First is creative. Season 3 is the final piece of a storytelling puzzle connecting Season 1 & 2 to NORTHSTAR. It's now or never. We are ready to build this world out, deepen the dramatic intrigue, and take the action to another level.
- Second is technical. As we demonstrated in Season 2, every penny we raise will go towards widening the scope of our production. With your pledge, we can put more resources into key departments, such as camera, lighting, sound, and visual effects, not to mention logistical support, such as on-set catering, transportation, and sanitation. All of the work we do now with Season 3 will only help us better prepare for NORTHSTAR.
- Third is our audience. After raising our visibility with Season 2, our team was able to form product placement partnerships with regional and national brands such as Stormy Kromer, Dickies Medical, NcSTAR and Damascus Worldwide. Along with major sponsor Rip It Energy Fuel, and newly-minted 2019 sponsor True North Outpost, NORTHBOUND will continue to pioneer innovative product sponsorship models. Your resources will also enable us to submit our series to more festivals, which helps us raise our profile in an evolving media landscape that is hungry for original content. In the end, a growing audience number is the most tangible way we can demonstrate our project is viable to co-production companies that can take THE NORTHSTAR SAGA to another level.
As with any large goal, we are breaking things down into manageable steps that are ambitious, yet realistic enough for us all to realize today. Season 1 was made on the pooled resources of individual team members. We doubled our resources for Season 2 which was produced for $15,000, thanks chiefly to a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Now, with careful creative and logistical planning, the third iteration of NORTHBOUND has been budgeted at a minimum amount of $20,000. This target will insure that our team can meet core production and marketing requirements to produce the final 4 episodes of NORTHBOUND. If we raise more than $20,000 during the course of this 30 day campaign, we’ve set a stretch-goal of $25,000, which unlocks more resources into each department, increases cast & crew compensation, can account for additional shoot days, and will expand both festival and marketing outreach possibilities.
As you consider donating, know that your contribution is an encouragement to filmmakers that are working hard to craft new stories in a landscape dominated by sequels and remakes. Your contribution affirms that we are now in a place to affordably produce trailblazing work outside of established systems that for too long have dominated what gets made, and how it gets seen. Your contribution supports our long-term commitment to make Michigan a new destination for creative employment. Finally, with you behind us, we can inspire future generations to dream without fear and use their gifts to give back to their communities. From our family to yours, THANK YOU.
Risks and challenges
While the media industry is notoriously fickle, it can also be quite rewarding for major contributors with a commercially-viable project that is correctly positioned in an evolving content market.
The success of a project can come as the result of several factors: the impact of industry trends, timing of current events, strong story-telling, solid performances, and innovative marketing. With so many elements out of the creator's control, there is no clear-cut way of assuring a project's success.
Aside from the risk that goes into making content as a creator, it can be equally risky for an investor. It is our top priority that we, as content creators hold fast to a steady vision that will guide this web series from initial prep to final delivery. Key personnel will be placed in positions to handle potential problems that may arise with sudden actor and location unavailability, a change in weather conditions, or unforeseen injuries. Our core creative and logistical team puts safety at the forefront of all projects, and we feel a deep responsibility to keep all contributors assured that they are supporting a project that is run with the utmost professionalism and care.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
