Reviewing Sculpts, Painting Models

We've had something reminiscent of Christmas morning here at the office over the past week and a half, receiving a shipment of test-shots for Ogre Miniatures Set 1. I previewed these sprues in the last update, and by and large they look great! Unfortunately, there have been some small issues here and there with the sculpts, and we're working with the factory to correct them. Due to this, we're looking at another delay of about six weeks. While it's frustrating, we wanted to let you know as soon as possible. We'd rather try to make these corrections and have a small delay, than sending out a product we aren't proud of.

The Main Attraction

I know what you're here for though, you want to see the minis. Ben Williams, SJ Games production artist, is also a renowned miniature painter (seriously, check out some of his work). We gave him some units to take a crack at, and what he returned with is utterly gorgeous. Reminder: These aren't final, and will not come prepainted.

Steve also dug up some of the old metal Ogres to compare and contrast with the new plastic. As you can see, there are small changes, but it's mostly allowing us to get a little more fine detail out of the sculpt.

While we are working on the tweaks to Ogre Miniatures Set 1, Set 2 is going through file design. Sam reviewed the Mark IV this week. These are all very preliminary, and are still a ways off, but it gives you an idea of where we're at.

That's all we have for now. We'll keep you abreast of any significant updates going forward, and can't wait to get these miniatures to you!

      WoW, WoW, WoW!

Nicely painted and great looking even without the paint.

Another 6 weeks??!!. Based on this when is the ETA now?

@Everyone: Ben will be taking another set home with him next week, and we'll try to get more detailed guides up in the near-ish future (don't want to rush him). -HS

These new plastic minis will blow the old metal ones out of the water. No matter how hard you try, casting metal minis in spin-cast molds will lead to parts that are slightly mis-shapen due to the centrifugal forces on the rubber molds. But just note how crisp and straight all the lines are on the plastic minis? clean up will be a breeze on these, if you take your time removing them from the sprues with the proper tools.

Please add my name to those below who'd love to get a list of the brands and colour #'s of paints used! The work he did is gorgeous! And if he has time to make a video too, that'd be awesome! But even just the list and those beautiful photos make for a great starting point! Keep up the great work. Sorry to hear about the delay, but anything worth doing is worth doing well, even if it takes a bit longer.

@A. Mull: I'll let him know!

@Frank Falvey: He uses a mix, but I know he is using P3 paints primarily, and I believe he undercoats with a grey primer first, at least I've seen him do that in the past.

@I'll ask him, I'd like to do a painting tips video in the future. As someone who's painted for a while (and who is nowhere close to Ben) I have used Simple Green cleaning solution, soaking for a day, then toothbrush. Usually works like a charm, but if you leave plastic in too long it can get kind of soft.

@Keith Lewis: After the Chinese New Year announced in February, we estimated September delivery, with a 6 week delay we're looking at early October delivery. Of course we'd hope to get it out sooner, we want to get it out as quickly as possible, but we couldn't approve the sculpts as-is, just a few too many small problems. -HS

Does Mr. Williams have any recommendations for completely stripping paint from a plastic miniature without damaging it? I can see that I'm going to have to make several attempts to get something approximating a poor imitation of that quality. Made more complicated by the fact that I want to paint at least the non-Ogre units in camouflage, with different patterns/colors for the different base material colors to be able to distinguish sides or units.

Can you say what brand paints the artist used?
Technical question, did he use an undercoat of primer before painting, or just highlight/drybrush the mini's naturally cast color?
Those pictures are all the more reason I would really love to see you guys reissue in metal sculpts for an obscene amount of money.

Your staff painter is incredible...they look cel-shaded, like something straight out of Borderlands. Really, really works well with the bright-and-saturated thing the maps have going on!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. We really want to get Set 1 into your hands before we ask for money for Set 2. There may come a day when we feel confident enough to overlap projects, but right now we want to solve one set of problems at a time, in time to apply those solutions to the next project. So it will be a while before we run the Set 2 KS. - SJ

It's become a bit of a cliche' ... but where do I throw my money for Set 2? Seriously, these are insanely nice looking.
