1,000 Backers, And The Next Set!

Posted by Steve Jackson Games (Creator)

This is Steve, with a note about Ogre Miniatures Set 2. Yes, 2.

We have reached a thousand backers for Set 1, which exceeds our expectations – and with over a week still to go! I don’t think we will hit the really crazy stretch goals, but you could still surprise me.

We’ve reached the point where Kickstarter supporters not only get Set 1 sooner, but save $5 over retail prices. If enough stretch goals are reached, there will be more savings. I see your enthusiasm here and it feeds my own!

So it’s definitely time to talk about a second set. There are two options on this: the Combine versions of the same units, or the rest of the PE units. I’m going to put my two cents in now and say that I’d rather do the advanced units.

So my initial proposal for Set 2, at a backer price of $30, would include:

A Mark IV (red)

A Fencer (blue, with extra Fencer-B turret)

Defense units in blue, as follows:

SHVY – 4, going up to 6 with stretch goals

MHWZ – 2, going up to 4

GEV-PC, with infantry – 4, going up to 6

LGEV – 6, going up (by pairs) to 10

Light Tank – 6, going up (also by pairs) to 10.

Maybe: trucks. Maybe: a couple of missile crawlers. Those might add another $5 to the set’s initial cost, but you might tell me that it’s worth it.

Here’s a survey. Let me know what you think.

It seems to me that it would be super nice to bundle a couple/three/four Miniature 2 sets with the GEV and Shockwave maps. That would give people the ability to play both the original OGRE and the original GEV in 3D. Personally, I have ODE, but it would be nice for people who missed ODE. Be nice to have a "use" and a "keep" set of maps, too... Oh, and how about a Mk II? That wouldn't be too hard to do???? The Mk II is a fun little unit, always one of my favorites. Maybe a 3D bridge for the GEV map, with both "up" and "destroyed" versions?

And tiny computers with itsy-bitsy drive units in each miniature to allow them to play themselves and move independently... Might want to get to work on that one now, could take a few months to figure it out.

Unfortunately, there's no way to answer the first question of the survey 'Yes'; you have to pick one or the other, and I want to see both.

I'll want enough light tanks to play an all-LT Breakthrough - 12 LTs - probably not so many GEV-PCs. I'd trade off a SHVY (just 5 in the box) and MHWZ (just 2 in the box) for more LTs.

If there are that many GEV-PCs, maybe include some specialty INF, or maybe save them for a later box.

Another option would be to have Set 2 of GEV units (LT, MHWZ, GEV-PC), and Set 3 of Shockwave units (SHVY, LGEV, missile crawlers, and laser towers).

    4. David Crowell on

I would prefer hovertrucks over wheeled if only one is to be made.

    5. Charles Turnitsa on

      Advanced PE units, absolutely!

    6. Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton on

Overnight saw the $55K SG drop ... so another MSL Tank ... now on to $60K and the fourth HOW.

    7. David Crowell on

I'd like to see a box of infantry. Lots of infantry. Heavy weapons and possibly LADs would be a bonus.

I love infantry for Ogre/GEV. A couple of extra boxes would let me paint some up as marines, heavy weapons teams, engineers, etc too.

    8. Roland Boshnack on

I'd like to see the advanced units first, then go back and do the Combine units, as SJ suggests. I'd definitely pay more to get trucks and missile crawlers in the box.

Absolutely the best news on this campaign!!!!!!! Well done - go with advanced!!!!!

    10. Will McCammon on

Arggg. You pose such a difficult question in the survey.
My biggest question through this whole campaign was when the Combine counterpart units would appear. I want them, but now they're held hostage to fleshing out the unit mix with the "rest" of the really needed units like the LGEV and MHWR.
Very, very tough call, but I went with the advanced unit mix Steve proposes as it is better for the product line as a whole to get these out there. The game used the Paneuro units on the counters for decades and folks had fun, so it won't kill us to do the same with plastics.

I would ask that the Combine units *not* get forgotten, once the inertia is spent doing the advanced units.

Idea for Set 2: sculpt a stat line for each unit into it's bottom side, unobtrusively: i.e. "A2 R2 M3 D2" for the light tank. Mentioning it now, so it doesn't get too late in the process to add it. :)

I REALLY want to see us reach $80k . . . Glow-in-the-dark Ogres for the win!
      - D.

    13. Robert Gurskey on

I could do without the SHVYs.

    14. Michael D'Auben on

Super excited to hear Set 2 is looking like a go! I've done the survey and I'm in favor of Steve's suggesting to finish the advanced units for the PE first. I'd also be happy to pay an extra $5 for the crawlers.

    15. HRH Mo on

I voted for both, but am leaning towards targets in a separate box. May well want to buy more copies of the combat units than the targets. And Mobile CPs will be required!

@Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton
Honestly, I believe his decision to move forward with a Set 2 is truly due to the outstanding support that you, the fans of Ogre, have demonstrated towards this product. So thank YOU, each and everyone of you, for being such amazing fans dedicated to this game!
      - Drew
And yes, I'm really looking forward to our 40th!
      - D.

    17. Rob Klug

Nice. How about Set 2 comes with a box, maps, terrain counters and garage... just no cardboard units. So we can store these beauty's in a game ready box....

      Oh, yeah. Take my money.

And when will we hear about GURPS 4th Ed OGRE in print?

    18. Missing avatar

Go for the suggested mix but keep the targets as a sepperate package or an add on I can see my self getting 5 of set two and do not becessarily want the trucks etc

For the second question in the poll, I picked "just take my money"!

    20. Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton on

BTW, hearing SJ say he's already planning Set 2 just makes me all warm inside. The 40th Anniversary year of Ogre is going to be so great; and us fans get the birthday presents!

    21. wolf90 Collaborator

      @John DeCocq
We wish to complete this KS and get these units into everyone's hands. As evidenced by Steve's Update, a Set 2 is truly just in the "fact gathering" stage. So it would be a later project, and not part of this Kickstarter.

    22. J.l. Robert on

Rounding out the PE units would be best. But add the Mobile CP to the set (replacing the fixed CP in Set 1).

    23. John DeCocq

It is not clear to me from the update. Are you planning to add Set 2 to the current Kickstarter or run a separate campaign later?
Adding it to this one is naturally better.

    24. Xostriyad on

I say combine set, which forces you to do advanced PE and then advanced combine sets since you already let it slip that you really want to do advanced!

    25. Chris Nasipak on

Honestly I'd buy both the advanced vehicles -and- the Combine set. Pretty please!

    26. David Crowell on

I'm in for the rest of the PE units. On the fence about Missile Crawlers.

    27. Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton on

Take my money Steve! If and when Set 2 drops, I'll take five of them. I like the proposed unit mix you outline above, as that means the Combine forces might get Sets 3 and 4!!
