Over Twenty-Five Pounds of Awesome!

What You Get In The Box

We did the happy dance when a full set of Ogre arrived this week. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves:

Above: contents of the Ogre Designer's Edition retail box. Yes, that's the orange crater map way off in the horizon. Production Manager and Line Editor not included

Above: contents of the Ogre Designer's Edition Kickstarter box. Perhaps it's time to call your realtor?

Above: contents of the Ogre Designer's Edition Kickstarter box, plus one of each sponsored sheet

The pictures above don't include the Read Me First, or Pocket Ogre (for supporters at $150 and above).

The conference table is approx. 4 feet wide and 15 feet long. (Great for playing games!)

A Game System Of Truly Epic Proportions

For the Kickstarter box:

  • Box size: 24 by 20 by 5.8 inches
  • Box weight: 25.2 pounds
  • Maps laid out: 31 square feet
  • Maps laid out end-to-end: 13.8 feet long
  • Counter sheets laid out unpunched: 29.9 square feet
  • No. of 2-D counters: 1,100
  • No. of 3-D counters: 104
  • Total no. of counters: 1,204

We've mentioned that this should retail at around $400. We hope now you can see why. .  .

In case you're still wondering about the sponsored sheets, these aren't in Kickstarter or retail copies of Ogre Designer's Edition. They're a separate purchase

Is "the neat thing that Daniel has discovered about the maps" supposed to mean that each top half will geomorph with each of the bottom halves? Like those mix-up toys, where you can put Spiderman's top half onto Wonder Woman's bottom half? I was hoping Phil was right when he mentioned that in the GenCon 2012 video with W.E.M.

    2. Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 22, 2013

This is not important enough IMHO for a full update, so I'll just stick it here. Daniel, Phil, Brandon, and I had a good meeting today. We might post a real update within a day or so; we are about to have something to say (sorry, it definitely won't be a precise timeline, but you might be able to hum along to it). I see the requests below for other photos; we can see what else was on the photo roll. We discussed follow-on supplements and the promised free scenarios. We discussed the neat thing that Daniel has discovered about the maps (yes, I'm teasing). We reviewed progress on the WP version of War Room, and I hope somebody wants it, because it's coming along. We went over added-feature requests for War Room and lo, we think a couple of them are valid, though the interface will require some discussion. And we talked about the Delivery Event(s). -SJ

We have no firm dates at this time. Once the last of the proofs are approved then we will have more information. We expect to see the last of the proofs the first week of June (at the latest).

    4. Creator John H. on May 18, 2013

OK, it's been 3 days since your last reply - when do you think you'll be able to "confirm a timeline"?

    5. Creator Craig T. on May 14, 2013

@ Dominick. Tampa Ogre Fest sounds good to me. Maybe we can convince some SJG personnel to join us in tropical Florida for a much needed vacation after delivery.

    6. Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 14, 2013

@John H. -- Thanks for your patience. We aim to have an update on delivery timing soon. We think we're close to being able to confirm a timeline, so it makes sense right now to wait until we have something concrete before making an announcement.

I am in Tampa as well. I thing there will be an Ogre fest at Fendig Library sometime after delivery...

On air holes, the box needs and anti-suffocation warning, in case a toddler should crawl inside to die.

      Also,

"This project successfully raised its funding goal on May 11, 2012."

It is now May 11, 2013 - the first anniversary of Ogre DE being funded.

Despite multiple requests for an updated / confirmed delivery date over the past few weeks, we have nothing more concrete than "a further delay, of two weeks or more" on Mar 13 (two months ago), backing off from the previous delay until "Not Before July" announced on Feb. 21.

      So where are we?

According to the schedule, with the two-week delay, Printing should have started at least a week ago.

How about a First Anniversary Update on where we are at?

While I'm extremely happy with this message, I do so wish some of the photo's would have been taken from a point further up the table ::)) I'm happy about this project too, so this isn't so much a complaint as a request for 'further photo information.'

@SJ: "Turns out they're not especially needed - the 25 pounds in the bottom of the box holds it down pretty firmly."
Thanks for the info - presumably the box will just need a warning label: "Self-sealing - do not close when empty!" I'd second Ron's request for some hi-res pictures, but any chance of a top-down view giving everything equal prominence? (yes, I understand it will probably mean going to the nearest car park and arranging an aerial reconnaissance flight - but we've still got some months to wait!).

These pics have finally driven home exactly how much is in this box. Good grief. Almost dead center of the middle picture is a counter sheet with some brown/orange looking bits. Are those the 2D Ogres?

Well crud. While I love this, I just know I'm going to have to paint up more OGRE minis now. I can't have the new game and it's components out weighing the painted mini collection - it just is not natural.

    33. Creator John Buchanan on April 25, 2013

The Car Wars box may still be pretty good size. I know the fans are gonna want lots of maps and overlays and I suspect Steve is a softy about giving the fans what they want - especially if they're willing to kickstart it. For proof of softyness see pics above ^
Still, I don't see CW needing the Ogre Garage so that will save massive headaches (and space). Of course, if we can talk Mattel into releasing "Car Wars" themed matchbox cars we may need to buy a matchbox garage, but that's on us.
I wonder if that's quite as silly an idea as it sounds? A web search shows Mattel still making matchboxes even though sales are down (video games and pansy parents). They seem to like making themed packs. I wonder how they would feel about a kickstarter to fund Car Wars sets? Hmmm.....

    34. Creator Matthew Schultz on April 25, 2013

@sjg thanks for jumping in Steve and answering. I agree with you ACD has control over their own purchase. I'm going to my local store and ask they have an ACD account.

    35. Creator Steve Jackson Games on April 25, 2013

Pete and others - ACD didn't sponsor that sheet just to hoard it! That would be really evil, and they didn't fill out a Form 666-X "Authorization to Do Really Evil Stuff" with the Bavarian Illuminati Local No. 23, which has jurisdiction. Don't ask me how I know that, please.

They'll definitely make it available somehow, and when they tell us what the deal is, we'll share. But I'm sure that your odds of getting one quickly are best if you are a customer of a store that has an account with ACD. That was their whole point in sponsoring it :)

    36. Creator Talarius on April 24, 2013

@ Daniel Jew: thanks for the info; it's good to know I'll get some use out of the extras. Still... That is one big box and a LOT of units. o.0

    37. Creator Pete Hooper on April 24, 2013

So, no way for us to get the ACD sheet? I realize that they sponsored the sheet, and there's nothing to say they can't distribute them how they choose, but it's kind of a bummer....

    38. Creator KevinR on April 24, 2013

Re: maps. The two maps in the foreground of the first picture (and progressively buried in later pictures) are actually the north and south halves of the Battlefields S-2 map. Put them together, and then think about what table will contain it.
      .
Rearranging the halves does have some potential to make interesting new maps. I haven't put much thought into it yet, but you could do something like this, for instance:
      S2(S) G1(S)
      G1(N) S2(N)

    39. Creator Steve Jackson Games on April 24, 2013

AstralWanderer - I don't know whether the final version had air holes. Now I'm curious, too. We'll find out and answer. As to map halves - The G.E.V. maps geomorph along their edges but not in the middle, so you can't just stick (for instance) the top of G1 on the bottom of S1 and have the hexes match. HOWEVER, you can use overlays to cover the unmatched half-hexes on the seam, and it will work just fine.

Matthew - yes, there will be extra classic counters for sale.

wraith808 - re Car Wars. The box will NOT be this insanely big. I'm hoping for very high quality components, but not 25 pounds per set. That was only funny the first time.

Jon - The canvas bag will not be big enough to sleep in, unless perhaps you are a marmoset.

    40. Creator AstralWanderer on April 24, 2013

Another question - in update #55 http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/847271320/ogre-designers-edition/posts/314197 you mentioned that the box might need air holes for easy opening. Are they present, and if so, do they work? (query prompted by the Sedition Wars KS box, which is large enough that the only to open it is to hold the lid and shake hard...).

    41. Creator AstralWanderer on April 24, 2013

Thanks for the clarification on the maps - if halves from different pieces can be used together then that should offer lots more battlefield variety.

    42. Creator Matthew Schultz on April 24, 2013

Hey @sjg & @DanielJew are there going to be more of the classic counters for purchase I'm having non-buyers remorse.

    43. Creator Steve Jackson Games on April 24, 2013

@Astral: Each G.E.V. map section in the photos is half a G.E.V. map (thus, eight map sections, plus another two for the Ogre crater map which you can barely see, next to the box).

The classic counters look great -- they're bigger and easier to handle than the old ones, but retain the classic styling. We hope to have pictures soon.

      ~ Daniel Jew

    44. Creator wolf90 on April 24, 2013

@AstralWanderer...the maps come in halves, so you're looking at eight halves.
      .
      D.

    45. Creator AstralWanderer on April 24, 2013

Oh, forgot to ask one thing - how does the classic counter sheet shape up in comparison? (for those of us who ordered one). And shouldn't there be just four map sheets rather than eight?

    46. Creator John Post on April 24, 2013

Please reconsider including a Production Manager, Line Editor, or Intern with each box. I'm going to need someone to help me carry this monstrosity.

    47. Creator AstralWanderer on April 24, 2013

@SJG: "Production Manager and Line Editor not included"
Phew - that's a relief. Just think of how much extra postage they'd cost. :)
Even better, that means the table's included, right?
