Update #79

If At First You Don’t Succeed . . .

Tray Progress

We’re pleased to report good progress on the trays. Richard painstakingly laser cut each layer of the Masonite trays below, to Sam’s exact specifications.

As you can see, we’re trying to make the instructions as clear as possible, to minimize any further risk of miscommunication with the factory. The set was sent off on March 25, and we expect to get the factory’s test sample back the week of April 8.

Vulcan cavity #22, you’re going down

We apologize that we didn’t do this from the start -- we’ve never made an Ogre garage before, and are learning a lot from this project!

“Hey, crash test dummies!” “I thought we were giant killer robots”

On the factory’s side, the owner has personally visited the shop floor to impress on the staff the need to get this round correct. We’re indebted to our partners at GPI for an excellent relationship with the factory. The Chinese have a term for this, guanxi, which roughly translates to “strong business relationship, enabling things to get done.”

Signed Certificates

Steve’s right hand has taken on a life of its own -- like a tiny automated Ogre, it just keeps doing its thing at staff meetings, breaks, event downtimes, you name it. I’m sure it even tries to run cycles during his sleep! The certificates are now all done.

We hope Steve’s hand has recovered from thanking you for your support!

Car Wars Timeline Reboot

The latest poll on the Cars Wars private forum is smoking hot -- vote for the earthshaking 2030 event which will kick off the rebooted timeline. Will a rogue banking algorithm send the globe into a Greater Depression? Or will The Seas Rise, sending millions of refugees towards high ground? You decide! You can also give your suggestions for the next 2035 event. The poll ends on March 31.

(To access the forum, register at forums.sjgames.com using the email you gave Kickstarter, and allow 24-48 hours for our automated script to grant you viewing privileges. Please contact Brandon at kickstart@sjgames.com if you need further assistance at that point.)

This will be the last time we make an announcement about the Car Wars polls, so be sure to get involved, if that’s something you’ve been putting off!

@Daniel -- Yep I was just trying to think of reasons for the earlier snafu and thats the best idea i came up with. Let us know what happens when you get the samples back etc.

@David -- Thanks for your comment about the wall thickness. The factory has told us this thickness is okay (and there were walls this thin on the last sample which were okay), but we'll only know for sure when we get the new sample.

SJG: "The Combine NEEDED you . . ."
Sorry - I was running away in one of Wolf90's pink GEVs. :(
Good to hear that the extras seem to be on track, and hope your scheduled mission included an appropriately timed withdrawal. :)

AstralWanderer - WHERE WERE YOU when we were planning add-ons? The Combine NEEDED you . . .

The straightest answer that I can give to your question is that I am not aware of any delays in the extras that might worsen the lateness. Thursday (I think) Phil *thought* that he had identified a problem, not with the factory but with quantities of counters that we had ordered. He spent a stressy couple of hours and concluded that everything was under control after all. We are all still very involved with this delivery. Phil and Eric scouted a possible site for a new Command Post; I've done exterior recon only but am scheduled for a deep penetration mission Tuesday. (Translated: I drove over there and walked around the outside. Tuesday I'll tour it with the brokers.) --SJ

@Daniel: "AFAIK, the extras will be shipped with/at the same time as Ogre. I'm not sure about bikinis . . ."
My query wasn't about planned dates but about whether the extras were on track for those dates, i.e. to avoid an update like "Sorry about the latest delay - we found the Ogre miniskirts were too long and have sent them off to be shortened." As for the bikinis, they should be a doddle. Just take the Combine hourglass logo and turn it on its side. :)
*steps aside to avoid stampede of Ogre fans heading to the nearest beach and rating bikinis with comments like "Does that qualify as a Mark III or a Mark V?"*

some of the walls in that mockup look fairly thin. Im wondering if the plastic has to have a gap between the walls of the isolated pockets in order to cool/form properly after being pressed/formed. Im hoping thats not a factor. Just curious here. Ive done alot of 2d cad, but no 3d manufacturing.

Hi Zoe - good to hear from you. Monica and I were talking about your portable Ogre Minis table just the other day!

Metal or plastic minis are definitely part of the long-term plan, but they will also cost a lot more than the constructible ones. And a set full of minis would still, in my mind at least, need some kind of organizer. Cardboard would be adequate for big minis (though probably not as strong as plastic) but IMHO plastic is better overall, and it's certainly better for making the cavities that hold stacks of 2D counters.

Music - I just sent Tom Smith a note, asking if we can phone conference tonight.

@Zoe -- let's take your numbers and see what happens. The diagram above shows 17 Ogres (and a dozen structures) in bins 16 through 25 of the Ogre garage. Making the radical assumption that a 1/285 Ogre (which is about 3.5-4 inches long) costs the same as the cheapest aircraft you listed, that half of the Ogre garage contains over $100 of Ogres and almost $100 of structures. The other half of the garage contains more, if I remember the diagrams correctly. Do you really think that it would make sense for SJG to put $400 of Ogres and structures (plus another $1000+ of microarmor) in the $100 Ogre 6e Designer's Edition?

      In hindsight.....

Let's look at what Ares games has done for their Wings of War 1/144 aircraft. Each of which is a mix of diecast metal and plastic parts, from a little bigger than a Mk III Ogre, up to Mk VI size.

And.. fully painted. Cost is about $7-$25 each, retail. That includes packaging, plastic stand, and a pack of high-quality maneuver cards.

      http://www.aresgames.eu/games/ww1-wings-of-glory-line/ww1-wings-of-glory-airplane-packs
Made in China, of course, it would cost far too much in the US.

Given the costs and difficulties associated with the current way of doing things - you might want to consider making true 1/285 minis in future, using the same manufacturer.
