Update #77

Ogre Garage – Yay! Arrrgh!

We received the new test pieces for the Ogre Garage yesterday, this time in high quality clear plastic, with the heat-sealed pieces on the bottom (this is a correction to the sonic welding mentioned previously).

Trays -- Yay!

We hope you’ll agree that the trays look awesome. To our knowledge, this style of game tray hasn’t been attempted before. The support on the bottom makes the trays feel very sturdy.

The heat-sealed bottom will enclose tray art, showing where pieces go

In fact, the tray looked so strong that Phil felt the inexplicable need to do an impromptu drop test. Sam had to suppress an urge to be sick – but the trays survived.

Will our office floor make it?!?

The test counters were undamaged (one Vulcan arm dropped off, but went back on fine) and there was one crack on one edge of one tray.

Trays -- Aargh!

As you can see below, the dimensions are still wrong, despite the care taken on all sides. This looks to be due to a combination of factors.

Many pieces don't quite fit!

Our new plan of attack is twofold. We’re going to send a full set of dummy 3-D pieces for the factory to test out, as they make the tray. We’re also going to build and send actual physical models of the trays, showing the dimensions we want (we had been sending technical drawings before).

By attacking both at once -- the fit of the pieces in the spaces, and the size of the spaces as made -- we hope to avoid more rounds of back-and-forthing with the factory.

We’re so sorry that this means a further delay, of two weeks or more. We’re tearing our hair out too.

Steve and Ogre at MidSouthCon

Steve will be bringing several demo sets of Ogre to MidSouthCon (Memphis, March 22 to 24). If you’re in the area, do drop by for a game!

To catch Steve (and Ogre!) at other conventions this year, please see his new appearances page.

re: "As ill be buying extra counters and such from thirdpower and fire moutain etc"

I too will be getting extra counter sheets from the $4500 sponsers.... How much extra space will be in the Ogre Garages for the "extra" counters? (I would assume there may be a little, but NOT enough for all the extra sheets available. (I think 5? of them have 3-D counters.

U might look into seeing if you can get extra Ogre Garage Trays that people can buy for the Units on the Sponsors sheets. (Naturally they would NOT be coordinated to the Sponsor sheets, cause who knows which sheets people would buy.... But having a ready made storage tray with locations that are sized for the units from the sponsor sheets would be nice. (I am not saying design a whole new tray, just make extras of one of the existing ones)

      Thanks,

With folks like you around , we don't need comments that are not moderated. Get your refund and get lost.

Steve; I have and am proficient at Solid Modeling software called Solidworks. If it might help with your issues in China, I offer my services converting your drawings to solid models. These can be fed directly to CNC machines for max accuracy. No human input errors. I am aware of the problems with quality control there if you want to discuss them. As a secondary effect, I can also do the items to validate fit in the compartments if you want that as well but it sounds like you may have that covered.

it looks pretty close to me. As ill be buying extra counters and such from thirdpower and fire moutain etc its not a big deal if 1-2 of the counter spaces in the tray dont work. Im sure ill figure out which spaces i need to use. I dont imagine ill punch out all the counters to start with anyways and ill focus on the ones i need to use for the main scenarios that i typically play. For any overflow i plan on using another container.

I'm insanely happy with how the box withstood the drops. There is damage to the box (some crumples), but that was expected. What makes me so happy is that the counters survived undamaged.

@Johnny Imnot - "Ok who is screwing up the tech drawings??? Are you making errors in writing them up? Are they making errors in reading them?"

As I said in our conference call yesterday, there's no benefit in pointing blame. What we are doing is moving forward and everyone involved is attacking the problem from different directions. We know we're potentially spending time by building our own prototypes while the factory creates new molds, but I'd rather BOTH parties have something workable in a few weeks than let one of us run for two weeks and then find we have to try the second option.

As soon as we have news on the reworks we will share.

Aaand in other news, Daniel and I tested a new scenario Wednesday afternoon. Seven Ogres were involved, not counting the flat Pikeman unit. This was the first time I had actually *played* with the real, glossy 3-D counter samples on a full-sized GEV board (at Owlcon, it was all Ogre boards). So beautiful (snif). We used the big acrylic Ogre dice, too. Photos to come!

Steven - no, you should not assume that my being at MidSouthCon with Ogre samples and prototypes means that other staff members will not be at PAX E with Ogre stuff. We are mighty; we can be in two places at once. Granted, I can't do that PERSONALLY, but we have men working on it. TOP men. -SJ

How many times is it now, back and forth with the Trays? It seems like 3-4 but I may be wrong.... Ok who is screwing up the tech drawings??? Are you making errors in writing them up? Are they making errors in reading them? Or is the machine making the trays not consistent n the tolerances? What about using Styrofoam tray samples to send to them... or make a reverse sample insert. (If this does not fit in the tray, the tray is wrong size) IF they make it with close tolerances, what about temperature variations... Be sure that in Winter time, (32F or colder?) that the plastic does not contract enough to pinch the pieces.

I want my Ogre as much as everyone else, but this is the ultimate designers edition.. ULTIMATE. There will never be anything cooler, unless you build it yourself. That being said, I respect the care and attention to detail in this. The drop test? I mean really, I doubt very much that any other game or kick starter project I have ever backed has gone through that.. The first thing they do is load it up and break it!! Awesome.. I hope to god that Car wars does this kind of a project too.. I will back that in a millisecond.. All that being said.. I don't care f they take till Jan 2014, I have been waiting for 30 years for this.. what is a handful of months.. Carry on SJG, Carry on. OF course I need to get off my A$$ and get all the special counter sheets out there too..

So, okay, we were all hoping "sooner rather than later," but it's not really that big a deal to wait a couple more weeks. Frankly, back during the Kickstarter, I was figuring we'd be lucky to see it before a full year had passed. It's what happens when you are doing something this big and fancy.

For $300, you will receive four copies of the Kickstarter edition of Ogre, one T-shirt, and one extra Kickstarter counter sheet so you can show off the constructible Ogres and buildings. Your store name will be in the list of supporters. NOTE that we WILL call, and/or confirm with distributors, and/or send MIBs to your address, to verify that you are a genuine brick-and-mortar store. Any unverified supporters at this level will receive two copies of the game and nothing else! So do NOT choose this level unless you can prove that you are a real, currently operating, brick-and-mortar retailer. NOTE ALSO that this has to ship to an address in the continental US, but the store itself does not have to be in the US.

Sponsorship at this level will improve the rulebook by letting us hire a fantastic illustrator to do some character images. The $335 level . . . PLUS our artist, working from your photo, will put you into rulebook illustrations, and your name will appear in the credits. Depending on your own look and your preferences, you might be an officer, a trooper, a tanker, a refugee, a civilian leader, a technician . . . (Okay, at this level we will ship your game anywhere.)

You are sponsoring a whole 8" x 10” counter sheet, which will go into every copy of the game. We’ll work with you to determine what goes on the sheet and how it will be colored. The unit design will have to fit Ogre canon (no clown faces on the Superheavy Tanks, no overt advertising on the Ogres . . .) but that still leaves a lot of leeway. Your name will go on the sheet as sponsor, and we’ll send you at least a dozen extra copies of the sheet. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Again, shipped anywhere.)

Your own exclusive 8" x 10” counter sheet. Want an Ogre with your logo on it? Want a squadron of pink GEVs? No problem. We’ll work with you on colors, design, and choice of dies. You’ll also be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. This could be a promo item for a convention, distributor, or big retail store. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. If you want to resell your sheets, rather than just give them away, you’ll have to sign a licensing agreement to use the Ogre name and images, but that won’t cost you extra. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Shipping free in the US. You will pay actual shipping costs outside the US.)

Your own exclusive 10.5 x 17.125” counter sheet. You must use one of our existing dies; your best choices are Combine armor, Paneuro armor, or a sheet full of Ogres. Time is short, so you must either provide your own art to our specs, or make the "paint" job simple. You’ll still be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. Your Own Ogre Convention. Steve Jackson will attend your 2-day Ogre event anywhere in the US or Canada (you can ask about other locations, but no promises!). You will need to cover Steve’s hotel and travel costs separately, and dates have to fit his existing commitments, so factor that in, and please talk to Steve directly (post a comment with your contact info) before you pledge! You also get four copies of the Kickstarter edition, your choice of $600 worth of Ogre swag or extras, and naming rights to one Ogre in the Designer's Edition as described for the $200 level. Steve will bring a large stack of party favors (including three of our prototype 3-D Ogres which you can use as prizes), run events, talk about upcoming projects, sign things, and other general convention stuff. Or you can do it as a house party and only invite a few people. Your call.
