The Big Survey Is Out!

We have been sending out the Official Kickstarter Loot Survey, one backer level at a time. As far as I know, it has not gotten scrambled. And there were sighs of relief.

The survey text had an error regarding the Car Wars planning forum. That forum will in fact be open to anyone who supported at $23 or more. Some of you have already filled out the survey, and did not give us a Car Wars e-mail address. We will sort this out. If you gave us an e-mail address at all, you should be fine. If not, we’ll sort it out anyway. No one will be left in the dark, listening to the howling of the wolves grow nearer.

 Dangerous Games

I saw this Kickstarter project and immediately thought of the "Kill Evil Stevie" Killer scenario. As it turns out, the author, Matt Forbeck, is a Killer fan . . . He’s almost at his funding level, and it would be great if this mention happens to push him over. Want to read a story about a Very Bad Thing happening to a famous game designer at GenCon? Go support. I did.

Will Our Questions Never End?

Here’s the new survey, asking about fiction now that it’s no longer a question of competing stretch goals, and refining your input on Kickstarter Exclusive Sheet 3.

Name That App!

My working title for the Ogre “helper” app, now in alpha, is Ogre Adjutant. I think it’s a good name, but if you give me one I like better on this forum thread, we’ll thank you in the app credits. Here’s the tricky part: maximum 12 characters.

OK so only shows two books by Keith Laumer and neither are Bolo novels. Think Ogre could make a showing?

Ogre Adjutant is a perfect name.

    2. Graham Brand on June 1, 2012

@Warren: pledging more than $23 has always meant that you would have access to the forum. The confusion just arose the other way round because of the way a question in this survey was written.
Are you saying that you misunderstood the system (easily done!) and added in an extra $23 to your pledge to 'pay' for forum access? If you've already sent in your survey then use the blue Send Message button above to let the powers-that-be know with the extra that you want it allocated to instead.

    3. Patrick Forbeck on June 1, 2012

Steve, I would like to say that Matt Forbeck is related to me and a really good writer! Speaking for myself, thank you very much for your support and your post about his project. I'm sure that it helped greatly!

To others: Matt is a gamer folks! been making and designing games for a long time. Good writer also. Check his stuff out! I don't think you can lose! :)

Wait ... so I wasted the extra $23 that I allocated towards a Car Wars forum membership? Is there any way to update my designations so I can assign the money to different extras, now that my (over $23) pledge automatically gives me access to the forum?

I was very pleased to log in and see that Dangerous Games had met its funding goal. Thanks, all!
WRT playing the vote system - It is also JUST FINE if you fill it out with what you really think. The only thing that confuses me worse than people trying to outguess the ranking system is people sending me messages about how they are outguessing the ranking system. Just so you know . . . (And so far, NOTHING on that list is ranking poorly.)
      Jeff - Ouch. Recover well!
Andrew - re "don't publish bad books." I wish I could send you to New York to make a brief presentation before some publishers I could name.

    6. loopy on May 31, 2012

Will there be books on tape to go with the 1977 copy of Ogre? Or do we get audible books?

    7. Cormac Russell on May 31, 2012

In the middle of re-reading all the Bolo books right now (just finished Cold Steel last night) and am really hoping we get more Ogre fiction. :) There are definitely different tones to how Ogres speak in all the manual and magazine article fiction and how the Bolos (especially as written by Laumer) speak/think. Plus Ogre fiction doesn't have to be focused on just Ogres, the life of a Battlesuit squad or a tank crew is interesting too and not as far off scope as they are in the Bolo fiction.

@ Carl Taylor: I agree. I think that the difference between Bolos and Ogres are (my opinion) that the Bolos seem to be "fatherly" - noble, protective, excellent guardians of humanity. Ogres on the other hand probably put "winning" above all else and the "puny humans" all around them had better watch out. A bit more brutal. Yeah, and seeing how they're budding self-awareness works out that they're much more powerful than humans and yet serve them would be an interesting read. We already have hints in the official history that the AI Factories may decide that they know better what is good for humans . . .

I have read all the Bolo books and I am really interested in how Ogre fiction would be different. Bolos are massive intelligent cybertanks that are programmed to take seriously duty, honor and country. A gallant knight not as they were but as they should have been...and armed with hellbores.

Ogres in the short fiction have always seemed a little more pragmatic and possibly a little more bloodthirsty but with a sense of humor. "Beware of Ogres for you are small and make good tread lubricant." I am especially interested in the first Ogres which became self aware. I would definitely buy the first book and if it was good I would buy more.

I am with you Jennifer, I also moved my two wants to don't wants just to give more importance to all of the Really Wants. That being said, my don't wan'ts were more along the lines of, Won't shed a tear if I don't get, especially if I get the others.

I'm in favor of anything adding more units for the diverse factions. I'm particularly interested in the Vatican stuff.

I like good games. I like good books. Most games 'based' on books or moves are terrible. I've stayed away from books based on games mostly due to fear.

      Don't publish bad books.

    13. Olna Jenn Smith on May 31, 2012

Just a clarifying explanation - It's not REALLY that I "don't want" some of the counter options listed, it's just that I am aware a survey with two really want and everything else at want isn't all that useful, and you don't have a "do want a little LESS" option.

    18. shadowMafia on May 31, 2012

I would do more than buy every book of Ogre fiction, I would throw money at an Ogre fiction Kickstarter in an entirely unseemly fashion.

    19. mike on May 31, 2012

I'd love it if you had someone like Dan Abnett or Sandy Mitchell writing Ogre sci-fi, I'd snap those up in an instant. Their 40k books are a late night guilty pleasure of mine.

I *really* like the idea of cross-marketing supporters' projects on this forum. It stimulates continued participation, and we know that social networks create resonate marketing brand, so it helps SJGs, too.

    23. Jeff Vandine on May 31, 2012

Pretty cool Kickstarter. Alas, I'm totally burned out on money (just had a kidney removed; oddly enough, they don't do that for free). But if I HAD any money, it would go to that one, that's for sure.

i took a few moments to review Dangerous Games , then pledged this project. It seems worthwhile at its face.

Is it right, that hte app will definately be iOS only, or have there be some thoughts to those of us who prefer little robots to bitten fruit?
