Kickstarter Exclusive Sheet 3 Surrrrrvey!

I am looking forward to a quiet Memorial Day weekend WORKING ON OGRE.

The survey for the third exclusive counter sheet is here. And no, we still have not posted the Big Survey.

Ben - The Mk. III and Mk. V Attack scenarios on the original map will look very familar to you, and from there you can catch up a bit at a time. If I have not made the "advanced" rules comprehensible, I have FAILed (stupid, stupid Steve creature).
John - I expect that some of the sentient ones do. Interesting possibilities for fiction there, though if it got very sentimental it would be in Laumer's Bolo AI-angst territory, and it would be hard to do that better than Laumer did. (Asimov's robots? NO comparison.)

      Do Orge's observe Memorial Day?

    3. Scott Walker on May 29, 2012

@Ben Know how you feel. Last I played was around 1980. Someone in our gaming group had the game, so (being a starving student) I never bought it myself. I just remember enjoying playing it. So I've been deferring some opinions to those with more experience playing Ogre. But I knew I shouldn't pass up the opportunity to grab a "blast from the past" again!

I wish I had kept up with Ogre, cause the only version I played was the original table top about 20 years ago so all the development in the Ogre world is, unfortunately beyond me... :( Sad days. So for once I'm thinking I should leave this to the better educated masses.... Wait... Did I really just say that?

I think the idea of sinking vs floating ogres is interesting. They could float to be offensive weapons or sink for concealment. Mechanically it wouldn't be much different than a submarine.

I really love the idea of getting to raid Rome in Ogre. History repeats itself. Vatican targets FTW!

    7. Humanoid Typhoon on May 27, 2012

TBH, I love the idea of a "Nuke the Vatican" scenario, though a world with a standing Vatican army is terrifying to say the least.

    8. Alvin Helms
      on May 27, 2012

@Leila: Even better, *both*. The former can be a secondary bonus target, while the latter can be a Hardened Command Post, surrounded by Laser Turrets. Attacker enters from the southeast, across the Tiber and beyond the Colosseum...

    9. Lyle Watson on May 27, 2012

Pigs Have flown, ask any diehard Floydian. That they may do do again Is cool on its own. :-)
I liked all the options, and Really liked a couple, so whatever shows up will be appreciated.

    10. Leila Ross on May 27, 2012

@Alvin No you want the Castel Sant'Angelo the pope's fortress in Rome.

@ Tom I will let you know. I have been trying everything that I can think of to fix it but no luck. I am sure it is on the Kickstarter side of things though. I know SJ and company are not at fault! Very Frustrating!

    12. Tom Boucher on May 26, 2012

@Chuck if you ever figure it out, let me know. I stopped getting them some time ago and now check the site religiously for Ogre and other project updates. I get the 'funding successful' etc notes, but never the updates and I can find nowhere to change that setting and the 'help' section isn't geared towards sponsors.

    13. Alvin Helms

I know it's absurd, but when I saw the suggestion for "Vatican buildings," I immediately thought: "St. Peter's Basilica."

    14. Steve Jackson Games 13-time creator on May 26, 2012

Thanks for feedback. I deliberately left out the "don't care" center result - I would like people either to say they want or don't want. That's sort of an experiment too.
As far as what fits - the total size looks like 18 x 11 right now - lots of space! But it's not JUST about size. Some things interleave, some don't. It's understood that you folks are not voting with total information, and if I feel that I need to come back for clarification, I don't mind if you don't. There have already been almost 2,000 votes on that survey!
      Yes, Ogres sink.
Chuck - I'm sorry; I don't get useful "help" responses from Kickstarter either.
Point understood about "nobody wants to HAVE to get one of the extra sheets." Anything that goes on here will have fun potential on its own, even if it's just "Hah, this is the special target to blow up!"

@scantrontb Yep... I even tried deleting all the checks, saving and then rechecking everything and saving again in hopes that it will feed their database. I did it again in hopes that it might work with brute force.

@Chuck Meeks, try to see if your setting on KS got changed... go to the upper right o the screen and click on the "me" button go to the "edit settings" under the "my account" column, and then to the "notifications" tab, and verify that the check-box is checked for all the projects you want to send you email, are indeed checked. make sure you save the changes... that should fix your problem.

I am still not receiving any updates from the Kickstarter site. I havn't since about half way through the Kickstarter project. The only way I know about surveys or updates is if I go to Kickstarter and look myself every day or Roy Kubicek happens to send me something. Any Ideas?

    20. Joe Chaparro on May 26, 2012

Yeah, I know that they will be available. I even said that I may buy one or more.

I just don't want stuff that's geared towards those sheets as a part of the boxed set that we get.

    21. Roy Kubicek on May 26, 2012

FYI, the $4.5K sheets will be available. There are three mailing lists currently involving them.

      Nihon :
      uncommon OGRES:
      Paneuro units:

    22. Joe Chaparro on May 26, 2012

I don't like the idea of counters that require one of the $4.5k sheets to make full use of. Personally, I may buy one, or more, depending on the price, but I don't want to get stuck with something that would be useless otherwise.

I really like the blank cutouts. That way, you get an Ogre, but could do whatever you want with it.

As for naval rules, yeah, Ogres sink. It's not even just in the vignettes. I'm pretty sure that there's a rule that says that Ogres can hide in water.

That's not counting the unofficial naval rules, and even aerial rules that have come out. I'm pretty sure that both of these were in some magazines.

Actually, just checked. These articles were both reprinted in The Ogre Book, 2nd ed, pages 54 and 50, respectively.

The assumption that it's volume is equal to a pyramid is suspect. Assume that slightly less than half of that pyramid is occupied, and you can get a density of 1 tonne/cu.m.

On the other hand, 380 tonnes is slightly above 6 times the weight of an M-1 Abrams. Assuming the same density, and scaling the M-1's dimensions, it should be 14.5 x 6.5 x 4.4 meters. With no need for crew spaces, I would have expected the Ogre to be more dense, rather than less dense, than the Abrams.

Scaling the Abrams up to 25.5 meters long would give a weight of around 2000 tonnes.

    24. Duncan McEwen on May 26, 2012

@Todd I worked out some Naval units some time ago. Given the scale of the game, almost all naval ships would be the sizes of Ogres to have any meaning. I would love to see a Naval expansion using big ships. I should repost that stuff on the SJG website forums...

    25. KevinR
      on May 26, 2012

Per canon, Ogres sink. See the usual vignette (Ogre rising out of river in pursuit of CP).

    26. KevinR
      on May 26, 2012

@greypilgrim -- Mark V stats (from blueprint wallpaper):
      Length x width x height (hull) = 25.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 meters.
      Weight = 380 metric tonnes.
      Volume, assuming pyramid = 860 cu m.
      Density = 0.44 tonnes/cu m. (Water is 1 tonne/cu m, cork is about 0.25.)
If Ogres are water tight, they float (quite high in the water). If they fill with water, they could sink. [Need water to displace about 480 cu m of air, or a volume 20 x 8 x 3 meters.]

    27. greypilgrim on May 26, 2012

Steve- RE: Todd Junker & 'naval variants -
Hey - yeah - openwater and/or island area scenarios!
Do OGRES float? or just act as submersible? There is that miniature of the sensor tower...

    28. Todd Junker on May 26, 2012

I know it's too late for the box, but for one of the future expansion sets, how about naval OGREs and naval ships based on their land equivalents. It wold require new rules, but really just variations of the land units and minor restrictions on both land and water based units (GEVs can be used in naval operations, but if disabled, they sink, etc.) I'd love to recreate beach assaults against entrenched and reinforced forces.

      1. Missing a "neutral / don't care" option in the middle.
      2. I want flying pig counters. Call them bio-engineered drones. With attack capabilities (Incoming! Flying pigs poop!)
      3. I bet an entire extra blank sheet would sell as an extra. Replace damaged parts, customize at will, use as gift cards, etc. Not a designed new sheet - same cutouts as some existing sheet - just blank.

    30. SvenT
      on May 26, 2012

How about this? - If you don't know what you are voting on, don't vote and hope (or rather rest assured) that the people who know about it will choose whats best for the game? Anyway it more Ogres, or more Vulcans, or more buildings, or more something - believe me, whatever they put in, it won't be bad!

That being said I really hope that they do not add too much stuff for fractions that are not in the game from a start. What use is are they, if you decide against buying the extra sheets?

For me it's best to have two of each of the big tanks (Ogre VI, Vulcan, Fender).

@ Pete - yes I needed that too. It made my choices as more factions and an additional OGER sounds cool - but I don't know if I need two more or the Vulcan. That said, I really need to keep an eye out for the Vatican units.

    32. holoKitten on May 26, 2012

Survey needs the option 'I've never played Ogre before so I have no idea what I'm voting on'

    33. Doug Odell on May 26, 2012

How can someone get the $4.5k sheets at this point?

Christopher Lewis on May 26, 2012

Would be great to go for nihon and vatican buildings but they won't be much use to those not getting the $4.5k sheets so I went for stuff that can be used by the most people

@Christopher -- a canon-y source (GURPS Ogre?) has the Vatican as purple and gold/yellow.

Christopher Richmond on May 26, 2012

Vatican units should be gold and white, though, right? Hope you can fit a couple of little tiny crossed keys into the design somewhere....

    39. Ronster on May 26, 2012

Yah, I want most/all of it myself. Steve-o, next time you do a survey like his, how about letting us have some parameters, maybe give each option a size and tell us, the total size will be 'X'. That way we can make some intelligent choices as opposed to WAGs.

If I say yes to Mk VI, does that scotch the Vatican? Green buildings OR Vatican? Are Green buildings AND Vatican AND Nihon buildings possible? 2 of 3? Things like that.

I already sent in the survey, but maybe you can help those who answer later.

    40. Leila Ross on May 26, 2012

I just want to see the transgenic pigs.
