Outrunning the Track

See Update #22, posted just a few minutes before this one, for a link to the rules PDF. Bug-catches in the rules should go in the comments to that update, please.

Because the rate of support has continued to increase, we’ve outrun where we expected to be. The image we needed to announce the originally planned $600,000 stretch goal won’t be finished until Monday. We didn’t expect to NEED it until Monday! So we will push that goal back enough to make it a meaningful stretch, and if (as I now anticipate) we approach $600,000 tomorrow, I will post a non-angst-generating commitment for further Ogre-specific support.

(I say “originally planned.” We are so far ahead of our expectations that “originally planned” means “Thursday’s modification of Tuesday evening’s revision of last week’s revised plan.” I’m just saying.)

Yes, we’ve talked about it . . . I expect we will continue to talk about it. That's all I have for you right now.

Survey for Exclusive Sheet #2

Here’s a screen grab of the raw results of the $350K survey. You already know that we’re going to do classic counters as a separate extra. I should now reveal that one of our counter sheet sponsors (for a sheet in the box) currently wants flat Ogres, though we are still discussing their size. So it seems likely that the flat Ogre fans will get their wish.

That covers most of the minority desires. The “more trucks” and “more in standard colors” options are clearly not badly needed. So it will be EITHER 3-D buildings and Ogres, or another exclusive map overlay sheet. Or, perhaps, a sheet of mostly buildings and Ogres with a few slightly-thick overlays on it.

I am not going to make the final decision until all our sponsors decide what they want. Then I will choose something that complements their choices without duplicating them.

- Steve Jackson

@Fox: Thanks for the update. I'm just grateful that they are getting done!

    2. Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 7, 2012

@Allen F. Schell: The blueprint wallpaper is in progress. The production guys are really busy right now, however, and we only just came back from the weekend.

    3. Creator Ted Kreider on May 6, 2012

as much as I'm looking forward to the miniatures line restarting with new castings, I really like the simplicity of the slot assembled ogres and buildings. has anyone considered trying to do the standard units that way too? looking at say, the laser turrets or the combine command posts, I don't think it's impossibly small to consider. they'd obviously be small and simple with only a few panels.

while I'm posting, has anyone considered adding printed copies of the ogre book and the scenario book? maybe a nice new collected volume to support the line later on in 2013?

    4. Creator Warren Dew on May 6, 2012

@Jeff Vadine: Woah, does that mean someone bought what was left of Metagaming from Howard Thompson?

    5. Creator nmanczarek on May 5, 2012

I would like to see more 3-D target buildings.

    6. Creator Jeff Vandine on May 5, 2012

@Warren: Steve's already answered that somewhere in this huge list of comments: The only thing he took with him when he left Metagaming was the rights to Ogre and GEV. If you want a new copy of WarpWar, you'll have to go to the Decision Games pages, under Excaliber [sic] Games and look it up there -- I just ordered one myself not too long ago....

    7. Creator Warren Dew on May 5, 2012

One other thing - can we get "extra copy of the rule book" as an add on? It's often nice for each player to have their own copy of the rules.

    8. Creator Warren Dew on May 5, 2012

And speaking of goals, did SJGames end up with the rights to any of the other minigames? Warpwar, for example, had really good game play.

    9. Creator Warren Dew on May 5, 2012

Think about the $750k and $1M stretch goals now. $1M might actually still be a stretch goal.

    10. Creator Philip Reed on May 5, 2012

Wow. I go to Hong Kong and the project blows past anything I imagined. Thanks, everyone! It's very exciting and I will try to get good factory photos while I am in China on Tuesday and Wednesday.

sj->" it WILL be the current minis line"

      That is great news;
I have -way- too much of the current line
to be interested in recollecting from scratch!

(Although new Nipponese or Sino units, on the other hand...)

    12. Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 5, 2012

Kevin - it WILL be the current minis line, so yes, same scale.

    13. Creator Jeff Vandine on May 5, 2012

@Brett: Glad you've got plenty of copies of Ogre/GEV pocket-sized, some of the rest of us (and the many, many new players) would like to be in the same situation.
Pocklet GEV, Pocket Shockwave, Pocket Reinforcement Pack, Pocket Battlefields! Yay!
Also, Design new game: Hoverblitz! (If it's a great title, use it! Add in close air support VERTOL units!)

    14. Creator Kevin McCarthy on May 5, 2012

Is there any word on the scale of the new minis that will come out? Mainly, will they be the same scale as the current line?

    15. Creator Knockman on May 5, 2012

I'm still examining the results of the survey and cross-referencing a little, but one thing is obvious - more map overlays. So I'm considering 5 tiles on the custom-made counter sheet and not 3. More thoughts later....

    16. Creator Brett Skinner on May 5, 2012

I love battlesuit, would like an updated version to exist! Not interested in the old style ogre /gev (ie pocket ) have enough of those.

    17. Creator Marty Barylski on May 5, 2012

I'll take a total pass on Battlesuit - sadly it is not worth reprinting as it is. And a major re-design seems like another future expansion not something that can be delivered as part of this project. I personally prefer some of the good ideas which are tied with this product release, we have lots of great stuff on the plate for 2013 already.... I would grab a pocket version of GEV as an add-on. I know I've seen that idea around here somewhere.

    18. Creator Stilettoblade on May 5, 2012

This may be answered somewhere, but I haven't seen it in the comments...
We can order the "Targets go Boom!" KS sheet as an extra - will the "Exclusive Sheet #2" be
available as an add-on as well? Even if the final counter list isn't finalized, can that be added to the orders list for A) people who want more copies of everything, and B) people who can't afford to shell out the whole cost of a full copy of the game today (or have already promised their FLGS that they'll buy OGRE there) and want to be able have all the KS goodies?
Besides, I think it'd be fun for my end survey to include "$8 for Targets go Boom and another $8 for mystery KS goodies sheet"

    19. Creator Allen C. Smith on May 5, 2012

If you do new overlays, I propose 1) an airfield and 2) a rail yard. Both would be multi-hex. These could be used as objectives or simple scenic variety. Some sort of ridgeline/escarpment/mesa overlay would also be awesome - these would be impassable along one or more edges.

    20. Creator Allen C. Smith on May 5, 2012

The plan is subject to change at any time without notice. Or, as my wife would say, "Semper Gumby". (Always Flexible)

    21. Creator Bike Monet on May 5, 2012

3-D orges and buildings? Oh sweetness.

    22. Creator Chris Shockey on May 5, 2012

Definitely do Battlesuit! And more 3D Ogres would be great!

    23. Creator Jeffro on May 5, 2012

I am fond of Battlesuit-- shoot, anything that came in a black plastic box is awesome. The extra large Denis Loubet counters are awesome. You know, GURPS always had a Battlesuit skill in it... but I never really got any use out of it. The Battlesuit microgame actually delivered what I wanted.

Maybe if Steve Jackson could design a new Battlesuit game that plays faster/easier and that doesn't burn out the brain so badly...?

On the other hand... new Battlesuit map sheets and nicer Battlesuit counters and more scenarios.... Battlesuit Deluxe. Yeah... I'd play that. (Especially if there were a set of Steve Jackson designed variant rules to modernize just a bit-- though there is some charm to the original.)

    24. Creator Stabliser on May 5, 2012

My only copy of battlesuit is in good condition, my first copy of ogre is in tatters... 30 years from now I'd expect the same with 6e ogre and battlesuit - I don't think reprinting battlesuit is a good plan - existing version as pdf maybe.

    25. Creator Lawrence "Saker" Collins on May 5, 2012

SJG isn't "squeezing" money out of us; if you want to see an example of that, check out the Zombiecide! campaign.

    26. Creator Nicholas Vacek on May 5, 2012

Looking at the chart is seems very clear that Map Overlays are wanted the most and hated the least. Overlays got more "very important!" votes (445) than any other category, more "important" votes (485) than any other category, and fewer "marginal" and "not needed" votes than any other categories, by a huge margin.

    27. Creator Christopher Winkels on May 5, 2012

I'm a thumbs-down on Battlesuit. I found it added a layer of complexity without increasing the amount of fun. Infantry in the Ogre universe are just so much ground beef anyway. ;)

    28. Creator s.smith on May 5, 2012

This update is *very* promising, I'd go mental for Battlesuit and I'm very interested in flat one-hex ogre counters as well.

    29. Creator Roland Boshnack on May 5, 2012

I'm really not as thrilled about Battlesuit. One of the beauties of Ogre is that it's quick and easy to play, while Battlesuit felt like the kind of detailed simulation that turned me off from older wargames. Mind you, I'm not saying it's as bad as, say, Advanced Squad Leader, it's just that it isn't as fun-and-fast as Ogre. When a game includes rules like, "don't count too fast," then my enjoyment level plummets. Having to carefully monitor my opponent's every "dot" of movement was similarly unfun.

    30. Creator Daryl McLaurine on May 5, 2012

...If you include "Battlesuit" into this edition, you will have renewed my faith in Humanity.

Thanks Kyle and Frederik. Sorry for the separate posts,my mind was filled with after thoughts (crazy like that). I hope the 3D files for the miniatures are released. They released the chip board version... If nothing else, I can put the chip board version into a dxf and generate an STL in open scad... Could be cool. Come on Steve Jackson Games give this nerd with a 3D printer a bone! I will mail you some printed tanks! ;)

    34. Creator Christopher Lewis on May 5, 2012

Steve J - I'm more than stoked, this will blitz past 650k. Worse case is you go "and here is a final reward to say thanks" without making it a stretch goal, who cares Ogre is back and weighing in at nearly a stone!

    35. Creator S.D. on May 5, 2012

Goddamn whippersnappers with their fancy schmancy randomization devices... back in the day, we made our own dice out of knuckles, damnit! Our OWN knuckles!!

Some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope.

I intend 600 to be amazing. It is going to have to be amazing-nice rather than amaziing-boggling because of an unfortunate delay in the bogglifier. Please do not be disappointed with me for tying to be nice rather than cackling madly. This happens so rarely. I try so hard to be wicked, and the schedule gets a little bit our of whack, and the next think I know, I am smiling, and signing books, and saying "Why that is a nice Pomeranian, and indeed he does look as though understands every word." Yet, if the scurrying green beetles can hear, they will tell a different tale in their stridulations.

    39. Creator Leila Ross on May 5, 2012

      @Dustin... yer kiddin right?
You sir for no more gelt than you have shelled out already are (because other people not you, are buying in) getting extra treats.
SJgames in their wisdom is swapping out a prize (THEY HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED) for another prize also not announced, if Mr. Steve had not declared the change no-one would have known.
We are STILL getting a reward at 600K and the way this kickstart is trending we'll still get the original bonus at whatever new level it's scheduled for. After all the reason the change was made is because we will almost certainly roar past 0.6M before Monday when when he could post the original 600k prize.
But if you truly are offended... I am sure you can somehow delay pledges enough so that he can post the old level 0.6M prize.
Personally I'd rather have two prizes instead of one, but I guess I'm silly like that.

    40. Creator Dustin Ivey on May 5, 2012

We earned whatever the 600k goal is and we shouldn't be punished for donating generously...

    41. Creator Dustin Ivey on May 5, 2012

Is no one else bothered by the fact that they are pushing back there $600k goal in order to squeeze even more money out of us? I am supporting this game for over $200 and now they are going to push back what was supposed to be a super amazing goal of $600k. This bothers me.

    42. Creator Frederik Vezina on May 5, 2012

I shan't spam anywhere as hard, but I second Adam's suggestion

    43. Creator Kyle Bieneman on May 5, 2012

STL files for 3D printers were the first thing that came into my head when the possibility of miniatures re-emerged. I'm sure it'd be a miniscule portion of the audience, but it'd be pretty darn cool.

    44. Creator Adam David Herring on May 5, 2012

      Even more specifically:

Please release the 3d rendered files. These are what your nerd-core audience can really use. Leave them copy-righted. We don't want to sell them.

    45. Creator Adam David Herring on May 5, 2012

3D computer files for the models seen here please:

    46. Creator Adam David Herring on May 5, 2012

      .stl files would be nice

3D Files for models of the units please :)

Can "all" the art from the previous papers, boxes, rules, sheets; make cameo appearances in the new rule book? (or just the good stuff)

    49. Creator Allen F. Schell on May 4, 2012

Any more info on the Ogre blueprint wallpaper?
