Donuts Make People Happy
It’s hard to eat a donut with a frown on your face. There’s something about the smell and taste that takes us to that delightful place. Put simply, donuts make people happy.
Our team is hard at work to bring the joy of donuts to our friends and neighbors in Knoxville, TN. We’re opening our first Makers Donuts location just North of downtown (804 Tyson Street) in mid/late summer of 2015 and we need your help to make it happen.
Opening up this new donut shop is a big deal, both for our team and for Knoxville. We love our city and when we started Remedy Coffee in the Old City in 2009, some people thought we were crazy - 6 years later, the Old City is vibrant and flourishing with new residents and businesses and we are honored to be part of that journey.
Makers Donuts is aiming to do the same thing in the industrial neighborhood located just North of Broadway and West of Central Ave. Although it's just a short walk from downtown Knoxville there hasn't been any new retail businesses started in this neighborhood in decades. It's filled with amazing, historic buildings and it's our great pleasure to help bring life back to this beautiful yet often overlooked part of our city.
We’re taking classic donuts and making them even better. Each day, we’ll craft small batches of delicious donuts from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in order to achieve the most intense flavors possible.
We'll have the traditional favorites that we all love like glazed, powdered and the classic cake donut. But we're most excited to reach out and try some new flavor ideas. Here are a few of the creative flavors we're thinking about:
- Sea Salt Caramel
- Maple Bacon Glaze
- Blueberry Bourbon Basil Glaze
- Tennessee Moonshine
- Vanilla Bean Butter Cream
- Frosted Meyer Lemon
- Passion Fruit with Cocoa Nibs
- Chocolate Ganache
- Creme Brûlée
- Blackberry Lavender
- Plus many more!
Local donut ingredients are a must, but beyond that, when you visit Makers Donuts, you’ll experience the first name greetings of a local shop, sprinkled with a fresh, modern attitude.
Above all, Makers Donuts will be a neighborhood donut shop where you can come in and grab a freshly roasted coffee, pull up a stool and share the joy of donuts with friends and family.
Help Bring the Donuts to Life
We've priced out our fryer, mixer, exhaust hood and major components necessary to get the Makers Donuts kitchen up and running. We've done our research and at gently-used equipment prices, we've gotten this number to be far lower than average. Specifically, $5000 covers the following:
+ Fryer and Exhaust Hood
+ Proofing Box
+ Donut Cutter
+ 30 Qt. Mixer
Of course there are other expenses in the process of opening this shop, including the build out and finishing of the space, supplies, and inventory (all of which are being financed separately).
This Kickstarter project is all about the donuts and our goal of $5000 covers nearly all of our hands-on donut equipment costs - a major part of the equation and an opportunity for our neighbors and friends to share in bringing this idea to life.
As our way of saying thanks, we have some pretty sweet rewards for our backers, including first-edition "Makers" t-shirts, trucker caps, cool notebooks and free donuts. There's also a chance to create your own Donut in the shop when we open!
We want to send a special thank you to Tyler Oxendine for the great video production.
Risks and challenges
Once Makers Donuts is open, it cannot possibly fail...it's Donuts!
Okay, technically, it is possible. Any new business venture comes with risks and Makers Donuts is no different. However, we believe beautiful things start small - we are seasoned pros at making something out of nothing. Bootstrapped is what we do!
Our goal is to open in mid/late summer but of course, there is potential for delays with the time it takes to get city permits, inspections and approvals.
All rewards will be available for pick up at our 804 Tyson Street location once we open.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
