A whole new dual-nibbed fountain pen
Vittae’s Patent Pending design features two back-to-back nibs, allowing you to effortlessly switch between two colours of ink. No more hunting for a second pen or picking one up, just twist and use your alternate colour.
What if it was possible to fluidly switch colours when drawing or writing?
Vittae is a product of many conversations and observations around writing tools and has been the result of over a year's work designing and making.
I wanted to make a pen to make it easier for the annotators, the markers, the scribblers, the highlighters and the doodlers. I wanted to help the architects, teachers, calligraphers, lecturers, note takers and everyday writers. Colour brings energy to ideas, clarity to thoughts and hierarchy to scribbles. With seamless switching between two coloured nibs, Vittae can make your drawing and writing experience easier and more valuable.
Vittae is a cartridge based fountain pen which uses two back to back nibs. It also uses two hemispherical format cartridges which are independent from one another. This is to optimise space inside the body housing. These can be manually refilled when empty.
As the active nib flexes while it is being used, a small separator maintains coverage over the non used nib to help it from drying out. However, the nature of wet ink pens means that they are subject to the nib drying out while uncapped and unused for extended periods.
Dark blue & red ink have been used for consistency throughout the photos and video. The pen is able to be used with whichever two colours you choose.

Vittae’s body will be machined from aluminium or titanium, using high quality, precision CNC machines. The body is anodised to protect it from daily wear, and also to increase grip, giving you full control as you use the pen. As well as aluminium, we’re excited to offer Vittae in an alternative titanium body, offering an incredibly strong yet lightweight option.
The pen will be available in three finishes:
Silver Aluminium Body and Cap with Black Grip
- Black Aluminium Body and Cap with Black Grip
- Grey Titanium Body, Cap and Grip
A new Brass grip section is now available. See updates for more information.

Allowing considerable creative control with two colours or contrasting variable line weights using a single colour. Just switch out the nib for the one you require for the task.
Writing is one of the most personal things we can do, the tool we use to write influences how we write. Throughout many conversations I had around writing, many came back to flow.
The action or fact of moving along in a steady, continuous stream.
By watching how surgeons, engineers, students, artists and others worked, it became clear that they did their best work when in a state of flow. The tools they used had the potential to either help or hinder that state.
What followed was a methodical, considered process of reduction and refinement. Informed by conversations and observations around people using different types of writing tools. Trialling what worked by simplifying, and testing in an iterative cycle.
This idea grew from a fascination around tools and the considerations of how they are made. It became my final year honours project in DJCAD and has since been displayed at the local degree show in Dundee and exhibited in London at the New Designers show earlier this year.
Kickstarter is the next step in this journey.
Our team is small but mighty. A project like this becomes realised by asking a lot of questions and partnering with the right people. We are both obsessed with details and are determined to make this the best it can be.
Thanks to everyone who has gave their input to the project, however large or small.
Note: The photography features wires coming from the nibs to make this feel like it was jumping out from the paper. To clarify, this is a wet ink fountain pen and not an extruder.
If this campaign is successfully funded, Vittae will go into production.
This process will begin as soon as the campaign ends, finalising and understanding order quantities for manufacture.
Tooling and machining will be completed by Feb 2019 with an additional buffer window for quality control. Assembly will take place in March, packing and distribution will then take place in April for shipping in May.
Risks and challenges
Delays with manufacture and production are always possible. However, by having everything built in the same country as you means issues can be solved with a lot less friction, either in person or over the phone.
This project keeps evolving and I am constantly learning by being around knowledgable and experienced people. Things can however go wrong or take longer than expected so transparency and honesty is key here.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
