About this project
"86 Plots" is a graphic novel about a group of college kids who spend the summer of 1979 digging up a cemetery to find a long lost treasure. We are looking to raise $35,000 to complete the graphic novel "86 Plots" and get a start at putting the film together. Before getting into the particulars of our plan, please allow me to explain the origins of the project so that everything is put into proper context.
ORIGINS / DESCRIPTION
My partners and I have been working on this project for nearly three years. We started with a simple story idea, turned it into a screenplay, and in working with talented comic artist Kelsey Shannon, have completed the pencils to a 202 page graphic novel. "86 Plots" is a thriller oozing with mystery, history, and violence. I’ve been describing it for a while as a cross between Sherlock Holmes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Scooby-Doo. Smart and classy enough for sophisticates, yet sexy and bloody enough for everyone.
The graphic novel is 202 pages in length, and the status as of September 1, 2011 is as follows: Layouts and primary pencils complete. Final pencils, inking, and color are complete through page 29. This leaves 173 pages left to go through the finishing stages. The cover and a few other pages will have to be designed and completed in addition to these. (Inside the front and back covers, and a pin-up gallery in the back are good examples and common in graphic novels.)
$15,000 will go to Kelsey Shannon for finishing the book. He is penciling, inking, and coloring the entire thing, jobs usually done by more than one person and for a lot more money. Until now we have paid what we can, but much was done on spec, believing only in the project and one another.
$7,000 will go toward printing our first run.
$10,000 is for the book tour, booth cost at comic cons, and travel expenses. (we fly coach) This will allow us to properly market and sell our book, all while growing it's exposure.
$3,000 is for unforeseen costs and will be spent where needed and act as a reserve.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND CLOSING REMARKS
We’ve designed the book to meet two goals: First, to produce a marketable and high quality graphic novel that meets the future standards of the industry. Secondly, to create a workable storyboard for a film based on our script. This graphic novel is very cinematic and basically sets the skeleton for our storyboards, locations, design work, etc. Jobs that would have to be done anyway and at great cost of time and resources. At the end we will have a actual product for doing “pre-viz”, all while simultaneously building an audience for the film. ("Pre-viz" is the Pre-Visualization of a film, meaning design work, logistics, etc...)
Not only do we hope to produce income from the sale of the book, but we’re also hoping to give producers and studios a greater incentive to invest in our film. Also in doing this graphic novel I feel that many of the kinks that may have come up during filming were solved in this process. This allows for a finer degree of understanding and creativity during the filming later, driving the quality of the film up significantly. We developed this story to have minimal locations and a cast of only eight, making good creative decisions that simplify the whole story process while simultaneously strengthening it.
We currently have about $2,000, which is less than 10% of the funds needed to get the graphic novel finished and to give the film the springboard it needs. Hopefully this money will get us to "Kickstarter" funding and or become our reserve.
We are working outside of the system so that someday we may be a part of it. Helping to raise $35-$50,000 does the same for us as a five to ten million dollar find would be to a Major Studio. We don’t have the massive overhead or gigantic salaries, we are just normal people working out of our homes. We do this because we love it and for the hope of having a successful career on our own Hollywood budget film one day, when we will have earned it.
On humble behalf of my friends and partners, thank you,
- Colin Bryan
PS- If you can't help us with a generous donation of any size small or grand, we would still appreciate it if you would tell your friends about us. Talk to your wife, girlfriend, boss, or anyone who is a fan of comics and movies. Whether this proposal works or not we thank you.
86 PLOTS EXAMPLES
Here are the first 21 pages 98% finished. Please be aware that this graphic novel is for adults and there is some language and adult content within the examples shown. The wider pages 4-5 and 20-21 are both double page spreads. That is why the balloon size is smaller and the pages appear much thinner and wider. Also these images are not at full resolution, so some minor pixilation may occur, it won't print that way. Enjoy...
86 PLOTS TEMP COVER
Here is a TEMPORARY cover... This IS NOT the final cover, and DOES NOT represent the print offered as a reward. The actual cover will be one of the last things done. Picture the final in your mind like one of the great Drew Struzan movie posters. Kelsey made this temp poster just for this Kickstarter proposal, and we thought it would be cool for you all to see.
PICTURES AND EXAMPLES OF OUR AWESOME LOOT AND REWARDS...
These pictures are here so you will be able to view the rewards offered, and so that you may pick out your buttons. All of the rewards offered are exclusive, and designed just for this Kickstarter proposal. Keep in mind the shovels and pic-axes are real... You have to be 18 to receive any of this stuff.
Here is a photo of the cemetery map I made, this replica reward starts at the $80 level. The original is 20" x 30", and depending on how many are ordered the version sent out as a reward may be a little smaller. It will be made from a super high-res scan, and the paper will be a nice semi-gloss poster stock. All the little green tags are dates and grave information. (CLUES TOO!) The small blue paper at the bottom of the map covers a plot point and spoiler in the story. That is not part of the actual print, we just did not want to give anything away. This map is used by the characters in the book.
This is a picture of the "Editor's Copy" of the book. I will make the book up to date with all current art that has been done from September 1st till the project is funded. This is one of the more pricey rewards, but you will have everything we have regarding art. It also gives you a behind the scenes look at the raw pencils and storytelling. Be able to see all the changes, and follow the process like no other. I will also add character designs to the end of the book. You have to sign a standard Non-Disclosure form to receive this book, allowing you to read it over a year before it comes out. After the book launches next year, show it to whoever you want. This is the ultimate "86 Plots" collectible. The version sent out as a reward will have the temporary cover seen earlier in the proposal, not the boring one seen here.
EXAMPLES OF CREATOR OWNED PROJECTS THAT KELSEY AND I MADE TOGETHER:
I put this section in here to show you how cool the ten thousand dollar reward option could be. Keep in mind that some of this stuff took a long time to develop and create. We will likely help you more than the hours obligated, because you will have helped us so very much. We like to do things right and to the best of our ability. Much of the below was created in 2005, and as you can see with some of the dates on the posters, there was some wishful thinking on our part. All materials in this section and all other sections of this proposal belong to us and are protected by copyright.

FUND US OVER $35K AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS...
With additional money we can accomplish so much more. $35K is our goal, but if we get funded past that, here is what we had in mind: Funding to $40K unlocks a new set of 4 "86 Plots" shovel buttons. Funding to $50K will unlock an animated book trailer and a website with pictures, updates, wallpapers, blogs and more. Funding to $75K spawns a sequel graphic novel, and stickers for everyone. (with a reward of $10 dollars or more) Funding to $100K gets the film off the ground, we will shoot a real movie trailer, continue development work, add key players, and a whole lot more. Help us get this snowball rolling, and imagine where we can go!
Again, THANK YOU ALL! -Colin
