UPDATE: Thank You SO SO much to everyone who helped us reach our goal...
There is still more work that we can do to keep Penny's design legacy available for all. With the additional funds we'd raise here, Penny would like to resurrect the following 4 men's patterns:
#772 Johnny. The child's version is C772, the hoodie pullover with placket front.
#768 my interpretation of an Austrian design - great for riding, skiing, skating, chopping wood etc...
#760P Geoffrey Pullover
#742 David's Pullover
Penny would also like to develop a series of DVD's showing the "French Method" of knitting and she has quite a few expenses coming up with a press run in April 2013 so your continue support is greatly appreciated!
Who is Penny Straker?
Penny Straker has been a knitwear designer since the 1960's and currently lives and STILL designs in South Dartmouth Massachusetts. Her company, Straker Classics offers more than 40 of her designs.
Penny Straker's Patterns are the benchmark of hand knitting patterns. Knitter-friendly, with clean graphics, including illustrations of techniques, they are written in a straightforward style. They take the knitter one step at a time through each section of a garment and are complete and accurate.
They are the original generic patterns, written for weights of yarn, not specific brand names. With a Penny Straker pattern any appropriate yarn that tests to required gauge can be used in the project.
Knitters have come to trust in our patterns because of the extra time and care given to each design. Learn more about Penny at http://www.strakerclassics.com/company.html
What Are We Trying To Accomplish?
Our Kickstarter project is aiming to raise funds to digitize all 44 Straker Classics Patterns and upload them to Ravelry.com with links from StrakerClassics.com where they will be available for sale and immediate download.
We feel this is an important task to do now. Penny will be 72 next year and we want to ensure that her designs are preserved in digital format for the next generations of knitters. Currently they are only available in printed form which Penny has to manage when reorders are necessary. Her available time and ability to do that has become increasingly difficult.
Lastly, Penny's primary income source is from a gardening and landscaping business. Last summer, she had to work longer hours and a longer season to raise the funds to support the relaunch of a new website for her design business. Kickstarter funds will allow her the funds to IMMEDIATELY launch the digital patterns and give her the TIME to focus on producing more new designs in 2013.
What Will the Funds Be Used For?
- Digital pattern conversions from print to PDF (44 total) $1450
- Pattern uploading fees $550

Risks and challenges
We will be photographing the new pattern, “Bebe Rose & Cap" and having it printed. There may be some delay with third-party vendors (photographers, printer etc) in our ability to deliver the printed pattern-- but NOT likely.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
