Yes, as said in the description the prototype casing is intentionally oversized for development purposes. The final version will be less high and especially far less deep. The silk screen will be updated by a graphician and we'll use some more colors and more types of knobs to aid easy of use. We will use an anodized aluminium front plate, much like what was done for the Sawbench final version.
All pots, encoders, buttons, and interface jacks will be through-hole, which is even ok for beginners. Most circuitry will be SMD, but very easy SMD: SOIC IC's, 0805 caps and resistors, so all relatively big and sure as hell a lot easier to fix than through-hole. You get the best of both worlds.
The potentiometers are all Alps and have metal shafts. As far as we know these are the highest quality components with this form factor. All interface jacks will be trough-hole, just like all the other control components. So, no breakage or flimsiness, but high quality durable gear!
