WiFi enabled digital shade: self-adhesive smart film affixed to windows or glass partitions and controlled by iOS / Android devices.
Our reason for starting this project is simple: curtains have been around for thousands of years without much improvement. There are some nice ideas like motorized shades or smart glass, however, take up of these products have been very low due to their high cost and complex installation. With SONTE Film, we want to revolutionize the industry of windows and curtains. Our goal is to make an expensive technology affordable for everyone.
We brought SONTE Film to the 2013 International CES and received extremely positive responses and feedback. You can read about SONTE Film on CEPro, Cocoontech, Engadget and Entrepreneur.com. It has really given us a great boost in confidence that SONTE Film can become the forefront of window and curtain technology.
SONTE Film is based on smart film technology that allows the color of the film to go from non-transparent to transparent when you apply an electric current through it. SONTE Film will give you the option for privacy on demand by adjusting the opacity of the film on your window.
SONTE Film is also Wi-Fi enabled and simple to use. Our team designed the iOS / Android app which you can download for free so that you can control SONTE Film from anywhere in your home or office at a touch of a button.
Once installed, SONTE Film will have a slight affect on the general appearance and clarity of your windows.
Easy to install and use.
SONTE Film is designed to be DIY. It is manufactured with a self-adhesive cling layer on one side (peel and stick) which can be cut to any size and retro-fit onto any existing windows or glass partitions. Once SONTE Film has been affixed, all you need to do is connect the Wi-Fi enabled transformer to the film and turn on the power source.
So the installation procedure is simple:
1. Measure and cut.
2. Peel and stick.
3. Plug and play.
What's in the box.
You will receive the smart film, Wi-Fi transmitter/ transformer (one single unit), connector and cables, cleaning kit, instructions and App (free download).
Please refer to the FAQ section below for the tech specs.
Because you can cut SONTE Film into any shapes or sizes you want, you can use it on just about any glass surfaces - home/ office/ shop front windows or anywhere else you can think of!
When SONTE Film is in the non-transparent state, it can double as a projector screen which will be handy in your home or office.
The benefits are also wide-ranging:
- Lighting and shading
- UV protection
- Energy saving
Our expansion with your support.
SONTE is unique amongst start-ups in that we are taking the longer, more difficult approach of doing everything in-house - from the research and development to manufacturing to sales and packaging - to ensure consistent quality control at all points and to ensure the costs of production can be kept as low as possible.
So since founding SONTE in California, we have:
- Formed a great team in San Francisco, Hong Kong and China
- Moved in to our new manufacturing plant
- Acquired new machinery and engineered a system to manufacture SONTE Film on a large scale
- Tested a wide range of materials from different suppliers
- Manufactured and tested three generations of prototypes and now moving to production runs
We’re almost ready for full scale production and to launch SONTE Film to the market as soon as possible. But to make this happen sooner we need your financial support to get it right. That is why we are asking the Kickstarter community to help us.
With your support, you will be one of the first to have SONTE Film at a discount in your home or office. But more importantly, you will be playing a big part in revolutionizing the window and curtain industry!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Like many innovative Kickstarter projects, we may face several key risks and challenges in our goal to revolutionising the window and curtain industry. The primary risks for us include:
Any new product line may encounter problems or issues with finding the right suppliers when turning prototypes into mass produced products. This is one of the main concerns we had and our production plan has always been to do everything in-house. However, we still have to rely on external suppliers for certain raw materials but our team have been working for months negotiating with a number of suppliers, testing each of their component quality and finding the right suppliers to team up with.
We have already formed an awesome core team, but we need to expand our team to realise our goal. We are actively looking for new members to join SONTE and with extra resources, we can realise our goal sooner!
Designing and producing a new product to meet demands requires big commitments in both time and financials. We are aware of and have prepared for the manufacturing challenges ahead. One important aspect we have focused on is manufacturing capacity. We have expansion plans in place for additional team members, machinery and facilities, and now mainly require the resources to execute them.
We are using ITO film which is made up of a thin layer of indium tin oxide (conducting layer) and a layer of polyethylene terephthalate (non-conducting layer, a.k.a. "PET").
Can SONTE Film be used again after sticking it onto a glass surface? And will it leave a glue stain afterwards?
We are currently exploring and testing adhesive techniques similar to phone screen protectors that uses electrostatic. The benefit of electrostatic is that it can be reused as long as the user keeps the adhesive layer clean. Also, since there is no adhesive or glue involved, no stains will remain on the glass.
SONTE Film has a water disbursement surface layer and coating on the edges to ensure that moisture or water splashes do not damage the film.
Current: 0.1 amperes per square meter
Power: 7 watts per square meter
Switching: less than 1 second
Operation: (on) transparent (off) opaque
Thickness: approximately 0.4mm
Viewing angle: approximately 130 degrees
Light transmittance: On (75%) Off (27%)
Haze Coefficient: On (7%) Off (87%)
Operating temperature: -20C (-4F) to 70C (158F)
SONTE Film requires power via the wall socket. However, if you intend on installing multiple films (two to three sheets) for windows that are side by side, we have devised a connector so that you can daisy chain them and only require one power socket to power the films.
