With the help of The Sasakawa foundation, we recently spent time giving concerts in Japan, bringing music to the parts of the country western musicians don't often travel to. We performed in countryside train stations and city offices in Ibaraki prefecture, to elderly hospital patients and to Kindergarten children in a Temple in the city of Sendai.  We commissioned new music especially for the project from Japan and the U.K and, as a result, were able to form successful and long-lasting cultural ties between the two nations and bring music to those who would have otherwise been unable to attend a concert of any kind. Have a look at some of the photos!

Due to the success of the project, we are thrilled to have been invited back to Japan to continue giving similar concerts. However, we will be unable to attend without the £1,000 that we are seeking. So what will the money go towards and what are the main outcomes?

The idea is to reach as many people with our concerts in as many unlikely venues as possible in the villages of the central and southern parts of the country. We will perform Japanese and British music in hospital wards, schools, temples and town halls, to children, families and the elderly over a two week period. As well as new commissions, our performances will include traditional folk songs from both countries. We'll give short solo introductions to each instrument in a string quartet and include popular tunes for the children like "Anpanman and Totoro!"  The people we perform to very rarely see String Quartets and so it is particularly exciting for them to see one from the U.K playing music that they are so familiar with.

There are three main aims for the project:

1: Inspire the younger generation and encourage musical studies through concerts for babies and schools.

2: Bring music into hospitals and other public spaces.

3: Cultural relations concerts for all ages - to include music by Japanese and British composers and folk songs from both nations.

Generous donations will go towards travel from one Japanese town to another, porterage, venue hire and transport, printing and publicity costs, performing rights and fees for the composers in order to commission new pieces for this project.

Thank You!

Risks and challenges

Having seen how successful the project was previously and how many people our music reached, we are confident that with our experience and with the correct preparation we can maximise the effect that the project will have and guarantee the lasting impact of our music in the rural parts of Japan. By performing music from all over the world to younger children, we hope to inspire them to take up instruments themselves and continue to look for ways to use music as an international bridge.
