About this project
Thanks to our generous group of backers, our Kickstarter funding goal has been reached and exceeded, so much so that our principal shooting budget has been acheived. Your continued contributions will go towards offsetting our post-production costs, such as editing, sound design, and music composition, which is crucial in bringing this film to fruition at the level that the story needs and deserves. Eternal thanks for your support and belief!!
PRODUCTION TITLE: Decimation
PRODUCTION TYPE: Independent Short-form Motion Picture
PRODUCTION LOCATION: Seattle Area, Washington State
SHOOTING SCHEDULE: 5-6 days, September, 2012
TARGETED RELEASE: 2013 National/International film festival circuit
ESTIMATED PRODUCTION BUDGET: $12,500.00
ESTIMATED POST-PRODUCTION BUDGET: $3,500.00
THE SYNOPSIS: Set in 1942, Decimation finds 10 Russian soldiers who have been accused of cowardice on the Eastern Front and are being temporarily imprisoned. A Red Army General decides to utilize the ancient Roman punishment of decimation where 1 soldier is drawn at random and the other 9 serve as his executioner. The men are notified of their punishment at dusk and by dawn they will either meet their maker or be forced to take a friends life before returning to the front line. The film will chronicle the men’s last traumatic hours before the execution, revealing the horrors of war, their collective experiences and their dreams for a normal post war life. (12 Angry Men meets All Quiet on the Western Front)
THE MISSION: Sometimes it is important to be reminded of the sacrifices those have made before us, reminded of the absurdity of war, so that we may never repeat it, for those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Decimation does not intend to outline or detail war through the traditional visual depiction of the horrors of battle. Instead, it approaches the subject matter through the eyes of those directly affected by it. It's a study of character of soldiers, of men, confronted with the choice of self-preservation or humanity. The lines between right and wrong, good and evil, are blurred, leaving the audience to interpret the experience without overly one-sided commentary.
Another motivating factor for this production is to support and utilize the talents of the artistic/film community of the Northwest. We intend to use only Northwestern (nearly all Seattle local) actors, crew, and equipment. 12 actors and anywhere from 10-20 crew members will be working on the film. It's an artistic passion project, which we trust will demonstrate and represent the strong talent that this area possesses. This film is not being shot for any financial gain. It is intended to serve as a showcase, experience, and credit for the many talented people in the area. The aim is for this film to be submitted to a wide range of festivals for the 2013 circuit.
THE FUNDING: Our overall production budget for the project stands right now at $11,500, which pays for camera, lighting, and grip equipment, locations, insurance, talent, crew, meals, transportation, props, costumes, and media. We have shaved the overhead down to a very reasonable budget, and especially thanks to generous donation of time and resources, we will be able to complete the film for this cost. We already have some funding in place, which is why we are aiming to raise less than that through this campaign. However, our post-production budget will undoubtedly come into play after we shoot the film, and so, every dollar that is raised above our goal and that we don't spend in production will go towards the finishing fund.
Thanks for your time, attention, and generosity in supporting our project. In doing so, you are helping to further the cause and spirit of independent filmmaking!
