Issue One is available to read for free online. (note: the navigation for each page is at the top, as in "previous" "next" or "begin the story")
A cop wants his drugs. A drug dealer wants him dead.
Summer 1974 Albuquerque. On the anniversary of his father's death -and the day he was born, 17 year old Calvin Ryder is propositioned by a friend to go on a road trip to Mexico. Along the way he needs him to stand guard while he his friend takes part in a drug deal. Stuck in the crossroads of a life going nowhere, he has the choice to play it safe, or plunge into the unknown.
Mayfield Eight is a full color six-part coming-of-age graphic novel set in the 1970s. It involves biker gangs, the Mexican Cartel, turf wars and crooked cops!
In the spirit of Breaking Bad and Gone in Sixty Seconds comes a high octane story that lives and breathes in the "grind-house" fashion of trashy drive-in movies! Cal finds himself in a pretty bad situation with a biker gang, of which there seems to be no way out. Can he muster the courage to face his enemies alone? Who can he turn to? You find out.
I'm raising funds to pay for printing issues One and Two, along with promotional material.
The setting being the 1970s is sprinkled here and there with the cultural happenings and attitudes of the era (Viet Nam, Watergate, Patty Hearst) with living breathing characters in full bell-bottomed muttonchop sideburn mode! Issue two will promise to give you an adrenaline-fueled ride down the road of questionable morality and shaky promises. The fuse is lit for a massive showdown between both sides of the border and and all sides of the law. It's all a question of who survives as Cal tries to keep his composure over the next three days.
Bonus: Art Cards!
Pledging 'Trooper' and up earns you some original art from me in the form of 3 x 6 inch hand-made inked/watercolor or pencil sketches of imagery steeped in biker culture and/or 1970s chic. Make a pledge and you get to pick which one you want. Heck, even if you don't want to buy something now you can at least log in and make a vote with an idea for an image you want to see.
More about the story, meet the characters.
There's a wide range of items from exclusive digital copies to the actual printed comic, t-shirts and hoodies, watercolor cards, pencil sketches...
... all the way up to getting YOUR NAME tattooed on the back of the (fictitious) biker chick Maxine French featured in issue one (limit 17 small names, 8 large names). Another reward is your ride (any motorcycle) depicted in a special full page in the gallery section. Lastly, the penultimate reward being an authentic full sized 'Banshees' motorcycle club patch ready to sew onto any jean jacket!
If you're a fan of fast action comics full of wanton carnage, vengeance and score-settling, look no further. What are you waiting for? Donate today and become immersed in the story that's Mayfield Eight!
Costs and Receipts:
Risks and challenges
As you can see from the charts above, I'm setting the monetary goals at a level that would meet the bare minimum of break-even territory. Anything over that would be gravy.
If we meet the $6700 amount, and just that, I would still have about 385 copies of Mayfield Eight issues one and two to sell in comic book stores, promote on the road at conventions and mail order sales. So that there is my insurance.
Making comics takes time. Especially at the quality level I'm aiming at. I would love to promise to you all that Mayfield Eight will be drawn printed and delivered to you door in its entirety, but that's out of reach. At least for now. Which is why I'm scaling this back to the first third of the story. It's a great first third, with everything you can expect from a satisfying story.
True, this is my first Kickstarter, but as you can see from the artwork on my site: www.timsnotebook.com/comics you'll be able to tell that I've been at this for quite some time. There's quite a few comics I've created that show my capabilities, and hopefully can help you reach an informed decision should you decide to fund this.
Also, it would be important to mention that this project, if funded successfully, will ship with a target date set around the month of May 2018. This will allow for me to work up the pages, get them print ready and have the print-run made in time.
Helping me with the distribution burden for further issues that exist outside of this Kickstarter is the publication title ChupaComics out of Seattle Wa. ( www.chupacomics.com ). Thank you, Patrick!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
