About this project

UPDATE: We have reached our stretch goal of $7,000!  There will be a music video of Giant Robot Song!

New stretch goal: if we hit $7,600, I'll spend an extra day in the recording studio and record all of my Firefly songs.  This will not be part of Giant Robot Album (that album will be long enough already); it will be a separate EP which will release via Bandcamp in early 2013.

The Firefly EP will include:

Firefly (Kaylee/Simon)

Watch How We Soar (Zoe/Wash)

No Power In The Verse (River, and this arrangement will be different than the Geek Girl EP arrangement)

Sending a Wave (Inara)

Big Damn Heroes (a song you haven't heard yet, written for Can't Stop The Serenity 2012)

And probably something else, I can't seem to stop writing Firefly songs. :)

Thank you for funding this project!

My name is Nicole.  My band is Hello, The Future!  I am the only person in my band.

For now.

So here's the deal, team.  I have been performing as Hello, The Future! since May 2010.  I've released three albums (Infinity Right Now, Sidekick and Other Songs, and Hello, The Future! Gets Her Filk On At Philcon) and one charity project (Mink Car Cover).  I became a full-time musician in May 2012, two years after starting my project and after releasing a new song every week on YouTube for 100 consecutive weeks.

I'm in the black, but barely.

This is my project.

I'm releasing a six-song EP called Geek Girl EP.  This is a collection of songs from the perspectives of six different female geek fandom characters:

Magic In Me (Julia Wicker, The Magician King)

No Hunger Games Can Get Me (Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games)

Four Hundred Years Ago (Chell, Portal 2)

I Don't Know What's Going To Happen To Me (Arya Stark, Game Of Thrones)

No One Left To Love (Johanna Mason, Mockingjay)

No Power In The Verse (River Tam, Firefly)

Many of these are songs I have played at concerts but never recorded.  If you want samples, play the project video.

Notice my profile picture?  The one of me in my "home office," making music in my "recording studio?"

I want to make that picture obsolete.

Giant Robot Album

If you've been following my Twitter or my YouTube or my Tumblr, you know I've been talking about this project called Giant Robot Album for almost a year.

When I went to fine arts camp, many years ago, there was this kid who got called out for drawing a giant robot in his notebook.  We were told that was the wrong way to be creative.

I turned that story into a song (maybe you've heard of it) and since then have written nearly a dozen more songs about creativity, my life as an indie geek musician, and the more personal side of Hello, The Future!

I want to share these songs with you, and I want to do it in a real studio.

I know a lot of you have been with me for years.  You watched as I climbed on top of my kitchen table and sang about T-Rex having feelings; you were there during my first real show at InterventionCon; you followed along as I pushed Mink Car Cover into existence, upgraded my mics, learned to use DAWs, played on a cruise ship, wrote a song called Not Blue Anymore, and moved to Los Angeles.

And we both know what comes next.  My upcoming tour.  Bigger shows. Submitting to record labels.  New songs, better and more complicated and as real as I can make them.

But before all of that, recording Giant Robot Album in a studio.  If you practice Getting Things Done, that's the most immediate next step.

Are you still reading this?  Have your eyes not slipped over to the right-hand column to check out the funding levels and rewards?  What are you waiting for?  I have worked hard to come up with the best rewards I can for you, because many of you have supported Hello, The Future! from the beginning and I want to thank you in the best way possible.

So please go check out the rewards, and please consider supporting this project.

Thank you.

  • Yes. I am offering up to sixteen bonus tracks, or a second album's worth.

If all sixteen bonus tracks get picked up, that'll add $9,300 to the Kickstarter, which means I will be able to do some amazing things with this album. One of which will be a second album of bonus tracks. :)

Can I write and record that many bonus tracks? Yes. I posted a new song to YouTube every week for 100 weeks.

Will all the bonus tracks include the full band? I don't know. I may do some quirky stuff with ukuleles or melodicas or a capella vocals. Hard to say until someone backs a bonus track.

Will the bonus tracks push back Giant Robot Album's release date? Depending on the number of bonus tracks that get backed, it may push back Giant Robot Album's release date by a few weeks, as I'll likely have to schedule a second session with the studio. However, we're still looking at early 2013.
