Starting from childhood, women are told they are cute, not clever. Pretty, but not powerful. Sexy but not smart. We have been conditioned to think that how we appear on the outside matters more than what we know and believe on the inside. But what if there was a fashion line that allowed women to show off their smarts, without compromising their style?

ATOMIC by Design
ATOMIC by Design is a clothing line and community for girls and women who aren’t afraid to wear their smarts on their sleeve. We produce bold, head-turning shirts, dresses, and accessories centered around one of the 118 atomic elements.
Each piece is cut and styled to be right at home with modern fashion, and comes with a beautifully designed booklet all about that element. From hydrogen, the lightest and most prolific element in the universe, to carbon, the quintessential connector and lynchpin of life, to sodium, silvery-white metal that’s one-half of salt and a key player in our bodies’ ability to fire nerve impulses — every element plays an important role in shaping our world.

Who is it for?
ATOMIC by Design was made for the captain of science olympiad, the aspiring physician volunteering at the hospital, and the soccer captain who binge watches Cosmos on the weekends. They’re classy enough to wear to work and school, yet comfortable enough to lounge around all day in, they’re made for women who know they can be bright and beautiful at the same time.
When a woman goes out in one of our pieces, she can’t wait to hear the question “what are you wearing?” Because it means she’s about to drop some knowledge.
You don’t have to be a scientist to wear ATOMIC by Design. You just need to have a sense of curiosity and wonder, and a willingness to ask questions and search for answers. Atoms might be small, but they hold within them some of the mightiest forces in existence.

Is it just about fashion?
No! Beyond the clothing, we’ve developed ways for curious girls to connect and find their tribe including educational materials and programming that allows our members to discover more about these elements, engage with real scientists, and connect with each other, helping them to take their passion further. We call our community ATOMIC Squad.

As part of the ATOMIC Squad, here's the run-down of our annual subscription:
Science Sleepover/Science Party Kit (includes 12 experiments)
Discover the excitement of science with these hands-on projects that you can do in your own home! Too often we see a cool phenomenon like crystals that grow overnight or exploding coke but still can’t explain it. The ATOMIC team is making sure that doesn’t happen :) Each month (with a bonus recipe of "Making Cheese at Home" to kick off the new year) we will release a new experiment that tells you what ingredients you need and the “why” behind this seemingly magical science. Includes invites for 3 friends to join you on this adventure. Our experiments:
- Discovering DNA from your cheek cells and strawberries
- Nucleation of the Diet Coke-Mentos geyser
- Supersaturated solutions behind candy making (i.e. rock candy and fudge)
- Crystal formation: growing epsom salt snowflakes on pipe cleaners
- Light and optics: bending light with plastic
- Acid-base reaction produces vinegar volcano
- Transpiration adds color to flowers
- Cornstarch mixture behaves as a Non-Newtonian fluid
- Conflicts of density and polarity: DIY lava lamp
- Mechanics of vortices: tornado in a bottle
- Removing copper oxide from pennies with vinegar
- Homemade polymers: slime making

Quarterly Explore Journals (x4)
Your budding scientists and technologists may not know exactly what they want to grow up to be. In fact, the careers they end up pursuing may not even exist yet! Nevertheless, the seeds of inspiration may already be sprouting in their minds. This interactive journal will help them to reflect on their interests and track their curiosity and growth mindset.

Elements Trading Cards (3 sets)
Discover the most abundant elements in your body with these trading cards. Trade the cards with your friends to see who can complete an entire set first! The cards are filled with fun facts about the elements as it relates to the human body. Print these at home or at your local print shop.

Small Element Posters
Display the collection of images from the Element Trading Card Set in your room, classroom, or locker as a reminder that your ATOMIC squad is always by your side and cheering you on. Each poster has a unique design meant to illustrate the locations where the most abundant elements in your body can be found (i.e. the environment, in your food, and in biological processes). Print at home, school or at your local print shop.

Science Trivia (includes 12 questions and answers)
Learn little known facts about the world we live in to share with your friends during recess or on the bus ride to school. And see who can find the answer first! Every month, a question is posed, and once you submit your answer, you can see what everyone else found out. Each trivia will also be explained in a short video illustrating the scientific concepts.

Chat with a Woman in STEM (12 1-1.5hr AMA group hangouts)
Be inspired to strive for what others have said is impossible. Hear the stories behind women in STEM with dreams to make a change, be it in their homes, their communities, their countries, and/or the world. Each month you will have the opportunity to join in on our conversation with these women as they share their scientific interests, along with pieces of advice for young girls with aspirations to enter similar fields.
Access to #STEMStories videos
Hear from girls just like you! Girls whose stories resemble yours and that of your ATOMIC squad! We gather stories from girls and women in STEM to illustrate that a love of science is not limited to those who fit a particular stereotype. Rather, science provides a path for one to dream big and in hearing the stories of others like us, we build a stronger network and leave a more impactful legacy for the generation behind us.
Invite to our closed Facebook group
Join a community of girls and women who aren’t afraid to wear their smarts on their sleeve. This group will provide a platform to connect with others and share resources as we strive to engage and empower the next generation of STEM women.
BONUS! ATOMIC Explorer
Discover new things about the elements that inspired our debut series. Did you know that Potassium burns with a lilac colored flame or that hydrogen is a protium? Enter the experience here.

We take the scientific rigor, development of learning objectives, safety and respectfulness of our community very seriously. We have a board of parents, educators, scientists and technologist who act as a steering committee for ATOMIC Squad's development. They provide feedback on the content and programming, vet it for accuracy and test it for usability. See their bios here.
Who's Behind This?
Hi, I'm Amanda. I'm a creative director and design strategist and did my undergrad in neuroscience at Columbia.
This is my third Kickstarter project and all three (The Leading Strand, Beyond Curie, ATOMIC by Design) are about helping people rediscover the wonder and humanity of science through design.
Growing up, I felt I had to hide my interest in science because other kids at school didn't think it was cool. There was nothing I could wear that was both science-y and cool, and I didn't really know many girls who shared my interests. ATOMIC by Design is what I wish I had growing up, and that's what makes me so passionate about this project.
What the Press Says
"In 2016, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya won a TED Residency on the strength of a bold idea: that design can shine a light on science and make scientific concepts intelligible to a wider public." — Forbes
"So yeah, you know those posters of historical luminaries that were hanging all over your high school? This is what we wished they'd looked like." — GLAMOUR on Beyond Curie
"A ballerina turned neuroscientist turned creative director, Phingbodhipakkiya has found a multitude of ways to pair design with science and entrepreneurism and more." — The Limit Does Not Exist
Risks and challenges
I have strong confidence that I will be able to deliver on the rewards of ATOMIC by Design. My two earlier Kickstarter projects (The Leading Strand & Beyond Curie) were both fully-funded and successfully fulfilled all rewards.
Our clothing vendor has been helping artists and creatives print clothing for over 3 years. The pouches will be made through another well-known manufacturer. It's possible that they will run into logistics challenges when manufacturing and shipping these items as they work with a variety of vendors themselves.
I will do everything in my power to ensure all rewards make it to my backers promptly and great condition. I will do my best to communicate any hiccups or unforeseen issues if they arise.
