About

I believe one of the hallmarks of journalism is the ability to give back to a community. We like to think our work helps in some way.

A successful Kickstarter campaign will enable me to both complete my long term project by compiling and publishing compelling photos with a strong narrative, and recoup some of the many thousands of dollars already spent in pursuit of this story. Other expenses include copy editing, design, marketing, gifts for backers, etc.

I’ve been writing and photographing stories about people affected by autism for about six years. It has been a journey that has shaped me and helped me in my work. Some areas go under-reported and deserve more attention and I believe this is one.

The Project

If this project is funded, I will be able to complete the written portion of the book that chronicles my journey over the past several years and the rich and interesting characters I have met while reporting on autism.

This will be an ebook. Inside, I will publish my written story along with captivating photography. I hope this work will inspire and shed light on autism and show real people and their struggles.

I plan on selling the ebook via Amazon.com, and iTunes for a small fee, probably around $2. I'm not doing this to make money. I want to tell a story and get it out to the public.

How I started this series

It was completely by chance, and by prodding from a friend, that I chose to do my first story about autism. I discovered 4-year-old Sophie. I never knew anything about autism, or what it was like being the parent of an autistic child. I quickly discovered how rare this opportunity was.

Discovery

I saw the patterns and the traits inherent in autism. As I kept delving into the story and interviewing more people, the story changed my life.
I’m drawn to autism because I see bits and pieces of myself in these children. I see the, patterns, social awkwardness, the obsession with routines and many other qualities. I don’t have autism, nor do I exhibit the extreme tendencies found in many — but I see enough that I have developed deep empathy.

The story has led me to discoveries within my own family, too. I never knew I had anyone affected by autism in my life. Growing up in the south, it just wasn’t something discussed around the dinner table.
With all the time I’ve spent talking to people affected by autism, it has really hit home how prevalent Autism is and yet how invisible it is at the same time.

Autistic children often look normal. To a passing stranger, an autistic child acting up is just another child misbehaving. The trials at home go unseen, as well. The trouble with behavior, communication and forfeiture of common childhood milestones goes unseen.

Even more invisible is a cure or a cause, offering little hope to a parent looking for answers and a way to help their child.

Risks and challenges

All the resources to complete this project have been gathered, including transcribing the many hours of interviews with families affected by autism. The challenges now are finishing the writing process, which includes editing, and then building the ebook.

Fortunately, I know many people that will help me complete these monumental tasks. This is the largest project I have tackled and I want it to be the best it can be. This takes time and backers like you. You will make this project a reality.

These backers get all of the above and will get a personal photo shoot in the photographer's home town, Pittsburg, Texas. This small town is 2 1/2 hours east of Dallas, Texas. While there these backers will also enjoy a family style lunch with the photographer.

These shoots will require planning and travel, so I have set the time for them in April 2014, which is National Autism Awareness Month.

I will later mail a signed 20x30 print of one of the photos taken, along with a small signed photo book to remember the occasion by. Backers will need to provide their own transportation and lodging.
