About this project

What is Hexa Pot™?

Hexa Pot™ is an eco-conscious disposable paper cooking pot for indoor/outdoor use.  It is designed to be convenient, light-weight, easy to dispose of when you're on picnics, camping, backpacking, on the go, or traveling.  One of many reasons for using a Hexa Pot™ instead of using traditional pots is to save time. Instead of having to wash the pots, you can toss them in the recycle bin trash. Time you would spend scraping, rinsing, washing and putting them away can be used for other things instead.  The Hexa Pot™ is formed in a hexagon shaped design for a stabilized base and is made from a special non-toxic waterproofing multi-ply paper material to prevent liquid from leaking out or soaking through the paper. The Hexa Pot™ can be easily stowed away into a backpack as a result of its resourceful space-saving collapsible design.  When ready to use, just easily unfold and expand to make the hexagon formed shape.

Intended Use of Hexa Pot™

The main intended use is for cooking liquid food such as water, coffee, milk, hot chocolate, green tea, etc.  It has been tested to also be used for cooking pasta, soup, chili, shabu shabu, ramen noodles, or udon, etc., as long as it contains liquid.  Another intended use is when preparing for a possible emergency situation.  Hexa Pot™ can be used for sterilizing and disinfecting contaminated water in an aftermath disaster situation where there is no access to drinkable water. Boiling water can be used as a method of disinfection. It can also be used as a method of portable water purification in rural or wilderness settings without access to a potable water infrastructure. Bringing water to the boil is effective in killing or inactivating most bacteria, viruses and pathogens. Boiling is the most certain way of killing all microorganisms. Sterilizing water in a Hexa Pot™ can be maintained by heating it to the boiling point of (212°F or 100°C) and holding at a rolling boil for at least 10 minutes. Due to its resourceful design, it can be conveniently stowed away together with the emergency survival kit in which will offer many strategic survival advantages.

The hexagon design shape helps naturally form an easy pouring "lip-pour spout" from the center vertex (where 2 sides of the hexagon meet, thus creating an interior angle spout). To carry the Hexa Pot™ over to a table or to pour the liquid into a cup/bowl after cooking is completed; you would grab the flaps on each side of the Hexa Pot™. The flaps on each end have a dual purpose use. One is to keep the lid in place during cooking so that the heat will not escape. The other purpose is to help the user easily pick up the Hexa Pot™ for easy pouring and carrying because the flaps do not retain heat.  For your safety, we recommend our users to wait until the hot steam evaporates after cooking is finished before picking up the Hexa Pot™ by the flaps because the hot steam can escape from the sides of the lid.

FAQ

  • Yes, the Hexa Pot™ can be used more than once and it’s waterproof. By the nature of the design and idea, the Hexa Pot™ is intended for single-use. However, the Hexa Pot™ may be carefully cleaned and reused if desired. In addition, the Hexa Pot™ will naturally compost in 24-36 months, once discarded in an appropriate environment. Personally, I have used a single pot up to 3 times. It all depends on how the end user employs the pot and what they cook in it. Each situation will vary depending on their utilization. Even though the description contains the word “paper”, the Hexa Pot™ is sturdier and thicker, made out of multi-ply paper material to withstand water or liquid foods.

  • We have couple in-house designers, however the sole designer of our Hexa Pot™ product is Alex Lee, the Founder/CEO of Energia USA. He believes in looking beyond today's known needs and requirements for enhancing the quality of life with his dedication to developing innovative eco-conscious designs, implying not solely on how something looks, but also how it satisfies a need, how it simplifies your life, how it makes you feel, and more importantly, on how it minimizes our environmental impact with environmentally responsible developments. He looks to enhance everyone’s well-being at every level. If the product is successful and is a hit, one of Alex’s goals is to provide a One for One movement similar to the TOMS Shoes company. He would like to help by matching every set of Hexa Pot™ purchased with a set of Hexa Pot™ given to citizens in developing countries who have no access to drinkable water and are in need of clean, disinfected, sterilized water.

  • There is no difference between the outdoor and the survival kit besides the outside packaging. Most people have the inclination of using a product if it is not labeled or marked for a specific use. Therefore, one of many valid reasons for a separate survival kit packaging is that it should be assembled together with a collection of basic emergency items and only be used in the event of an emergency situation. Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer whereas some Southern California citizens recently experienced powerful windstorms that prompted massive power outages. It’s ideal that emergency supply kits should contain a resourceful item like the Hexa Pot™ survival kit to help you manage during these outages. It can be advantageous when using for sterilizing and disinfecting contaminated water in an aftermath disaster situation where there is no access to drinkable water. Boiling water can be used as a method of disinfection. It can also be used as a method of portable water purification in rural or wilderness settings without access to a potable water infrastructure. • Our design process is a simplest methodology and the principles of origami have been used to design the Hexa Pot™. Origami (from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper"; kami changes to gami due to rendaku) is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD. There are a number of basic origami folds in contained in our design and combined in a variety of ways to make an intricate hexagon shape design with a single sheet of multi-ply paper. There are no adhesives used on our product and is interlocked by folding. The hexagon design shape created from the process helps naturally form an easy pouring "lip-pour spout" from the center vertex (where 2 sides of the hexagon meet, thus creating an interior angle spout). To carry the Hexa Pot™ over to a table or to pour the liquid into a cup/bowl after cooking is completed; you would grab the flaps on each side of the Hexa Pot™. The flaps on each end were designed to have a dual purpose use. One is to keep the lid in place during cooking so that the heat will not escape. The other purpose is to help the user easily pick up the Hexa Pot™ for easy pouring and carrying because the flaps do not retain heat. As a result of its resourceful, light-weight, and real estate saving flat collapsible design it can be easily stowed away into a backpack.

  • Our Founder/CEO, Alex Lee, who has an engineering background, came up with the idea and design back in 2008. His idea was rekindled in 2010 with actual working prototypes. Alex had several reasons for coming up with the Hexa Pot™ idea and design. A handful of reasons have been mentioned on our Kickstarter project page. Such as “can help curve” the problem of water conservation, while the Hexa Pot™ nixes that issue. Another reason is traditional stainless steel pots and pans may produce harmful health effects caused from iron, nickel and chromium. Also, germs can spread, if the stainless steel pots are not washed at a temperature of 250 degrees Fahrenheit; therein lays another problem, the use of hot water and the energy used to heat it. All in all, the main reason on how his idea simmered, was due to his love for the outdoors and the gratification gained from camping with his family. Being a father of 3 children and short statured, he was always in charge of hauling all the heavy camping gears, including the heavy pots and pans. Lifting and carrying the heavy camping gears was no easy task for him and it was the only thing he disliked about camping. During one of their many camping trips, an idea struck him when he saw his wife effortlessly carrying the paper plates to their camping site, meanwhile he was struggling with the heavy pots and pans. From here, you know how the story ends and a great product idea begins.

  • Hexa Pot™ material is 100% paper, therefore is naturally biodegradable and compostable. What is compost? Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment. Compost is a key ingredient in organic farming. At the simplest level, the process of composting simply requires "appropriate environment" or making a dampened organic matter (leaves, food waste, paper) and waiting for the materials to break down into dirt after a period of weeks or months. When there is no compost bin available, you would just dig a small hole to place the well dampened organic matter inside (leaves, food waste, paper) and let Mother Nature take its course. Tearing the paper pot into smaller pieces will help create a faster composting.

  • Even though our paper material is made out of the similar material used on paper plates and paper cups sold in markets. As a precaution, one of the very first things we did was getting our Hexa Pot™ tested and approved. We had our testing of the Hexa Pot™ conducted at a offsite FDA approved private laboratory. It was concluded that the Hexa Pot™ was approved as safe to use for it's intended use and no chemical leaks were found. Also substances that may or are reasonably expected to migrate to food as a result of the Hexa Pot's intended use were not detected.

  • The secret is paper cannot burn if there is water in it. The heat from the fire is being transferred through the bottom of the Hexa Pot™ and into the water (the 'heat sink') where it is absorbed and distributed. Eventually, the water temperature rises to boiling and the Hexa Pot™ continues to maintain its integrity. Within a minute or so, the water begins to boil. The Hexa Pot™ has a flash-point of over twice the temperature of boiling water and thus, will not ignite until the 'heat sink' material (the water) has fully evaporated. Then and only then will the Hexa Pot™ almost immediately burn into flame.
