What is QReatures (Video):

QReatures

QR codes are becoming an increasingly common sight - so why not make a game out of them?

Enter QReatures: a multiplayer creature combat game for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone!

Here's how it works

  • Scan any QR code and find QReatures or items inside them!
  • Battle with your QReatures to win their loyalty!
  • Improve your QReatures through experience and new equipment!
  • Battle your friends wirelessly, even across different devices!

Play wherever QR codes are advertised. You can scan any code and have a chance to find a QReature inside it that you can battle. Some QR codes contain specific QReatures (Redstinggames.com QR code may contain a scorpion, for instance), and others may contain a random one.

Items can also be found in QR codes and are used to augment your QReatures. Some can be equipped to your QReature just like armor or accessories in RPGs. Others are one-use items such as potions.

Battle will progress in phases. First, you select your QReature; that QReature will be your avatar. Your QReature and the opposing QReature then face off in battle!

In the first phase of battle, each player chooses their QReature's attack. The QReatures launch their attacks at one another, trading blows. Once damage has been calculated (factoring in both strength and the QReatures' elements), the players repeat these steps until one QReature is defeated and the other is victorious.

(Note: The combat sample and video were created by one of our programmers, and not designers. It is still a very rough design. Because battling is a primary mechanic in the game, we are going to spend a lot of time finishing the design and making it as fun as possible.)

After combat, both QReatures are granted experience points. Experience is used to level up QReatures' attacks and to give them more equipment slots. Equipment slots are used to augment your QReatures, such as by giving them extra health or additional attack options.

The game will also feature micro-transactions. These completely optional purchases will allow players to customize their QReatures, battlefield, and overall gameplay experience.

Our QReatures have a steampunk feel to them, but not all of them will be based on real-life animals. Because we are encouraging companies to design their own QReatures, there will also be QReatures that are unique and unfamiliar (e.g. a soda can QReature). The only constraint is that they are part organic, part technology.

What is the money used for?

Dev Equipment & Software - To be able to publish a commercial game, we need non-educational versions of software.
Business and Legal - Thus far, business expenses such as start-up costs, research, advertising, and domain name purchasing have all been out of pocket. We will also need insurance for the business.
Marketing (Submitting for reviews and advertising) - Though word of mouth can go a long way, it alone cannot do the job. We want as many people to see our game as possible!
Paying the team - Unfortunately, not all of us can work for free. This pays for food and rent for the summer.

Where would extra money go?

Any extra funds will go towards keeping the business moving past the first game. This includes continuing to pay the team and working on another game. The money will not be used for anything other than to keep the company going.

Easter Egg: If we reach our goal before the deadline, then we will post the outtakes for our video. They are very entertaining.

Easter Egg 2: If you link to us on any page (facebook, twitter, etc.), post that link on http://www.facebook.com/RedstingGames to earn another QReature code when rewards get distributed.

Design Guidelines for Backers

When creating a character, we would like you to pick a name and create a concept sketch. QReatures must stay within the steampunk theme: part organic, part mechanic.

Things that are not acceptable:
  • Obscene, hateful, or objectionable content
  • Unoriginal work obtained from someone else
  • Unlawful material

You are more than welcome to go back and forth with us about ideas and what is acceptable, even after you give us a first draft. Drafts must be submitted before May 20th.

FAQ

  • No. We want to just display a concept of what it may look like. The art will be steampunk-ish to convey a mixture of organic creatures caught in the QR code technology.

  • No. The game is meant to be played anywhere QR codes are advertised. You can use any QR code that you can find.

    Long answer: If you want to play the game on the computer, then you can, but we are going to limit the number of QR codes that you can scan per day by giving the player something like an energy to their scanner (phone). That way people cannot cheat to beat the game.
