"This emotional short expresses, in dance and drag, the intimate complexities of love and lust as only a Dolly Parton soundtrack can allow."
*** NEW STRETCH GOAL ***
Thank you for all of your support!! We just heard that our license fees for Dolly Parton's music are twice as much as originally budgeted. Can you help us get to $5000?
We're so close to finishing our first short film, Cologne!! We initially turned to the Kickstarter community two years ago to raise money to shoot Cologne. Now we're back to finance the final stages of post production leading up to our world premiere this June!
We are honored and super excited that Frameline, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, has selected Cologne for its program this year.
Making Cologne has been a phenomenal journey and we are incredibly proud of the film. We can't wait for you to see it finished. Thank you for your support!
WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?
This fund helps us offset post production costs, pay film festival submission fees and pay Ms. Dolly Parton for the rights to her music. The more resources we have now, the more we'll be able to share Cologne with all of you. We are currently completing color grading the picture and sound mixing at Skywalker Ranch in preparation for the premiere.
DID YOU SAY SKYWALKER RANCH?
Indeed. By true good fortune we are mixing with the best of the best at the same legendary Skywalker Studio that creates the sound design for Lucas, Spielberg, Pixar... there are too many names & films to list. Music has always been the heart and soul of this film. Rest assured, Cologne is going to sound as great as it looks.
WAIT, WHAT ABOUT DOLLY PARTON?
Cologne's original choreography is set to three Dolly Parton songs from her Backwoods Barbie album. (So good!) Dolly is a master storyteller with her music and lyrics. She is also a national treasure. And back in 2008 her voice inspired Brendan to tell this story.
CAN WE EXCEED THE GOAL?
That would be fantastic. The more money we raise, the more film festivals we will be able to submit to, which means more people will see Cologne.
HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THIS FILM?
Join us in San Francisco this June for our World Premiere at Frameline37, the world's largest & oldest showcase of queer cinema! But if you can't make the trip, we hope Frameline is just the beginning of our film festival run and that Cologne will soon be at a theater near you. The more funds we raise, the more festivals we will be able to submit to.
After a festival run, we will explore other distribution opportunities including online, broadcast & DVD short collections.
HOW ELSE CAN I HELP?
Share this Kickstarter campaign with your friends, families, neighbors, coworkers, dance partners... anyone you think would be interested in seeing Cologne on a big screen (and hopefully smaller screens down the road).
Post this project on your Facebook page. Tweet your favorite Dolly Parton lyric and our link. Make a Vine of yourself dancing. And then sweet talk your local film festival programmer in to checking out Cologne.
HOW CAN WE STAY IN TOUCH?
We have a fancy new website that will list upcoming screenings and news about Cologne. And then there is always:
WHO IS BEHIND THE SCENES?
Brendan Ranson-Walsh // writer, director & choreographer
Kyle Ranson-Walsh // producer
Brendan and Kyle are brothers who grew up just outside the nation’s capital and then relocated to opposite coasts, following their artistic dreams. While Brendan pursued his career as a performer and creative professional in NYC, Kyle has spent the past decade at Pixar Animation Studios, most recently bringing The Blue Umbrella to the screen. Together they co-founded Dept. of Story, a production company that develops narrative-driven projects across multiple platforms. Cologne is their first film.
Risks and challenges
The good news is that we are already almost at the finish line. There are always risks, but thankfully the largest hurdles are behind us.
We have just a few steps left:
• Finishing the color grading.
• Mixing the sound & music at Skywalker Sound.
• Finalizing paperwork for Dolly Parton's music.
• Submitting Cologne to film festivals around the world.
