Welcome to the Chasing Sarasota Kickstarter page! My name is Matt Mastrantuono and I directed this movie. For the better part of a decade I have been passionate about two things: Ultimate Frisbee and filmmaking. At the end of 2010, I decided to combine them and make a feature length documentary about Portland Rhino, an elite Ultimate Frisbee team from Oregon. I can't wait to share the story of Rhino's 2011 season. The only thing that stands in my way is post-production costs! Take a look at the trailer, read the information below and if the story and the mission speak to you, I'd love your support in making this film a reality.
What is the film about?
Chasing Sarasota (www.facebook.com/chasingsarasota)is the first feature length documentary on an elite, club Ultimate Frisbee team. The movie chronicles Portland Rhino's 2011 season.
In 2010, Portland Rhino was moments away from their dream. Two points shy of Club Nationals, Ultimate Frisbee's premiere event, the team collapsed and surrendered five straight points to lose. Broken and disillusioned, Rhino was left to pick up the pieces.
Chasing Sarasota is the story of Rhino's 2011 season: rebuilding, reloading and fighting for redemption. Live the full experience as Portland competes against the best teams in the world, in the nation's hardest region. Rhino learns that battling the best also means battling yourself. Team depleting injuries, strategic breakdowns, player disqualifications and the demons of last year's collapse jeopardize their ambitions to play on Ultimate's biggest stage: Club Nationals in Sarasota, Florida.
For the first time ever, get an all-access pass to an entire season with an elite club team. Experience everything about Portland Rhino - the outrageous humor, the unique personalities, the off-field struggles and the on-field triumphs. Rhino goes for broke trying to create a legacy and, on the way, creates something much greater - a family.
Why is it being made?
Ultimate Frisbee is enjoyed by millions of people across the globe. Few documentaries have centered around the compelling stories in this community. The film will be the first to explore "behind-the-scenes" of an elite club team and capture the exciting, dramatic, humorous and inspiring journey they take.
When will it be out?
The film will be released in the Spring/Summer of 2012.
How will the film be distributed?
Blurred Lens Productions (www.blurredlens.com) will be taking the film on a national tour - setting up events to screen and promote the project. We'll be showing the film, having Q&As with the director, selling jerseys and DVDs, and hosting after-parties! Contact ChasingSarasota@gmail.com to bring the movie to your city!
Additionally, Chasing Sarasota will be available for purchase via DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
Who is the filmmaker?
I am an independent filmmaker from Portland, Oregon. I have been making movies for the past 8 years. I incorporated a business this year and launched Blurred Lens Productions LLC.
I have been in the Ultimate community since 2004 and just finished my second year as a captain of Rhino. Ultimate is not just a hobby, it defines a large part of who I am.
Besides Ultimate and filmmaking, I've been known to appreciate dachshunds, Miami (OH) hockey, burritos and New Balance shoes.
I'm incredibly lucky to have some top-notch musicians partner with me on this project. In the trailer you heard tracks from:
Emancipator - "With Rainy Eyes" and "Anthem" (www.emancipatormusic.com)
The Filthy Violets - "Home Tonight" and "Fate" (www.facebook.com/thefilthyviolets and http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/lackluster-blvd./id466278464)
We're From Japan! - "Sing." (www.facebook.com/pages/Were-From-Japan/140992879251830)
Check them out. Buy their music. They're great musicians and even better people.
What is the money going towards?
Good question. I'm in post-production now and it isn't cheap! I raised all of the money to make sure the movie got filmed - travel costs, equipment purchases and a thousand other expenses. Now, I'm trying to raise money so I can finish the movie. These expenses include:
- Paying for color correction, sound mixing, animation and a score.
- Creating a Chasing Sarasota website.
- Creating DVDs and Blu-rays of the finished product.
- Making posters and fliers to promote the film.
- Taking the film to a city near you!
