About this project
STRETCH GOAL CREATURE FEATURE UPDATE:
Our $10,000 stretch goal CURIOUS CREATURE INDEX:
The poster will be a 11" X 26" 2-Color Silk Screen Print on "kraft" brown card stock. Instead of naming the creatures, however, we decided it would be more fun to include page numbers of where you could find them in the book(although this will take a bit of work too because we aren't actually numbering the pages in the book).
We added a new backer tier for the new poster. We were originally thinking $75 for the Creature Poster, however, because Original Art Pages are now unavailable, we are bringing the poster down to $60 instead. Original Art Pages were nearly sold out, so to cut down on backer-confusion, we went ahead and marked them sold out. I've already noted everyone's place in the picking order for Original Art Pages, so if you want to change your pledge amount to choose a higher tier, you wont lose your place in line.
We also added a new $35 tier for the 9 Lost Diver Postcards. Here are the first 5 of 9.
9 Lost Divers: At the foot of the great spiral stair, the diver discovers discarded helmets. These are the 9 Lost Divers. Matt gave each of these helmets its own distinct look, but what about the rest of their suits? We want to show you these lost divers in their entirety on 9 postcard prints.
What is it?
Book of Da is a 148 page, 5.5" X 8.5" B/W Cloth-bound Graphic Novel. It's a deep-sea adventure story with elements of science-fiction, fantasy, western, and mythology.
What's the story?
To tell you about the story, let us introduce you to the characters:
The Diver is an explorer above all. More Jacques Cousteau than Steve Irwin, he is curious but careful. The sea welcomes his gentle curiosity until he meets Da.
Da is the emotions of the sea. If Da likes you, then the fish like you. But, behind his placid face, Da demands obedience. If he doesn't get it, be prepared to see a new side of him.
The Reverend regales a rapt congregation with the story of Da and the Diver. He is highly theatrical and charismatic. But, he knows something he's not telling.
So what's the story's story?
The story began with this piece of poster art...
Matt enjoyed drawing the character so much, that he asked Mike to write a story around him. The story was to include plenty of alien undersea creatures and vistas for "the diver" to observe. We wanted to capture the dark, expansive, otherworldly quality of life on the sea floor.
Separately, we had already created character sketches of both the Reverend(originally called "Reverend Hollandaise") and Da("the pyrasquid"). We decided to see if we could create a universe where these three characters existed and interacted, and the basics of the Book of Da story came from this.
To make certain the story would keep Matt motivated over so many pages, Mike created a central character and story that draws inspiration from some of our collective favorite characters like Kurosawa's "Sanjuro" or his western counterpart in Sergio Leone's "Man with No Name" trilogy. As expected, the story was an easy sell.
For the past two years we worked together storyboarding each panel and page. Matt took the storyboards and created the stunning black and white images with artist's magic and fancy pens. Mike then added lettering and designed a spiffy cover.
148 pages is a lot of ink, but this is how Matt takes care of business...
Then, what's left to do?
Well, nothing, except print the book. We've already worked with a domestic printer to figure out all the particulars. Book of Da is ready for the presses! With your help we can raise the funds to bring it to life. And, to sweeten the deal, we're offering a few interesting incentives to throw your way.
We've been working hard, along with a little help from our little friends at 10foot2 Design, to bring you some colorful rewards:
$1 DIGITAL OFFERING: Digital Greenbacks add up, and to show our appreciation, we will include you're name in a prayer to the mighty Da. Perhaps you will be spared his watery wrath. Claim yours quickly!
$5 DIGITAL SALVATION: On top of that, we will send you a PDF package of digitally colorized art and production sketches from the graphic novel including plenty of behind-the-scenes type stuff.
$10 DIGITAL REDEMPTION: If you want to read the book but don't need to hold it in your hand then this level is for you. We will send you a Hi-Res PDF of the book from cover to cover. And, so you have something tangible to hold, we'll mail you a Book of Da postcard with a personal thank you.
$15 THE BOOK: This is what it's all about. You get the 148 page 5.5"X8.5" Cloth-bound Gold-Stamped Book of Da mailed right to your door. Hold it in your hand. Touch it. Smell it! Read it? It's all yours. We will sign it/sketch in it if you like (totally up to you).
$20 THE TRINITY: Three characters on three full color postcards on colored card-stock with hand printed backs. Stacked end-to-end, the postcards form a complete image featuring all three main characters. Behold the trinity!
$25 THE ICONOGRAPHY: Your choice of one of three 12" X 18" full color posters featuring one of the three main characters.
$30 THE ORNAMENT: Comic books are so two-dimensional. With a little cutting and folding you can bring Da to life in the third-dimension!. Hang him from a tree, from a rear-view mirror, in a doorway. Comes with easy to follow instructions and string.
$40 THE HOLY DIVER: The diver gets his moment in the spotlight on this 12" X 15" Silk Screen four-color print. These are a hand printed and numbered "backers-only" item.
$50 THE ARTIFACT: Where the magic happens. Choose a page of original art from the book. And, because most pages are drawn on both sides, you may get another side free!. These are ink and/or paint on 11" X 17" Bristol board. Limited number, first come first served.
$75 BEYOND THE FOLD: The book includes 2 two page "double-splash" images. At this level, chose one of the two images and receive the two 11" X 17" original art pages which join to make one 22" X 17" image.
$100 ORIGINAL ART COMMISSION: Matt will draw an original piece of art on 11" X 14" Bristol board just for you. This can be whatever you want. Do you like Ninja's, Pigs, and Outer-space? How about a ninja jumping a pig over a comet? Portraits are welcome too, or you can make us come up with something. Be warned, however, we will likely come up with something like a ninja jumping a pig over a comet.
$125 COLORED ORIGINAL ART COMMISSION: Add watercolor to your original art commission. Now that's classy!
$150 PERSONAL POSTCARD COMMISSION: We will take your original Art Commission and color it digitally. Along with your original art, we will send you copies of your colored art on 10, 4" X 6" Postcards with hand printed backs.
Risks and challenges
Book of Da is our first Kickstarter project and our first hardcover graphic novel. It takes a great deal of work to produce a book, and if our project is backed it will take good bit of work to get the incentives into your hands. Because of this, we've decided to do as much of the work as possible before hand.
Not only is the book complete and quotes for printing in order, but with few exceptions, the incentives are ready to go as well. We think it's best to take the guesswork out of backing.
Our three-thousand dollar goal represents a close approximation of what we will need to fulfill our incentives. Approximations are often off, however, and if our costs exceed our goal, we're prepared to supplement them to make sure all backers are satisfied.
Don't worry about us though, if we succeed in fulfilling our goal we will almost definitely have more books than we will need for our backers. Because of the demands of printing die-stamped hardcover books, you have to print quite a few for it to be worth it. If we have to throw in a few extra bucks to make sure everyone is happy, sales from our extra copies will no doubt cover the difference.
Thanks for checking out Book of Da! We're eager to hear your comments, questions, or suggestions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
