What is Anasazi?
Anasazi is a nearly wordless 212 page, 8" x 8.5" full-color cloth-bound graphic novel. Its a story of war, assimilation, and cultural divisions on a colorful alien planet that combines elements of science fiction, fantasy, mythology, world history, and horror.
16 chapters. 16 words. There is no English dialogue or exposition in Anasazi. Instead each chapter heading contains an alien language glyph along with a non-English word or phrase meaning and its literal English translation. These glyphs then appear as dialogue throughout the story.
Whats the story?
Two tribes, Malecite and Anasazi, are separated by a river, Fisterra. A forbidden crossing of this boundary leads to a bloody massacre, and two orphaned Anasazi children, Ebere and Xenia, are taken in by the Malecite. But divisions within the tribe sow bitter conflict and a mythical and monstrous enemy looms on the horizon.
A Little Backstory...
Several years ago Matt wrote a short comic story synopsis called “Others” about two clans of aliens that mistakenly go to war. Children go missing from each clan, a bloody massacre ensues, and an entire clan is wiped out. Returning home, the survivors discover that the children had found one another and were playing happily while the grown-ups slaughtered each other on their behalf. The story was to include indecipherable alien dialogue, black and white art, and end at the eye-opening moment at which the surviving clan finds the now orphaned children.
Matt showed it to Mike who thought it was an exciting story, but perhaps just the beginning, feeling that even more interesting stories lay in how the children and their new de facto guardians learn to live with such a haunting past. Coincidentally, on a recent trip to the Grand Canyon, Mike had picked up the story of the European naming of the Native American Anasazi people(now called Ancestral Puebloans). European settlers had taken the name the Navajo had given them for this group, a word that translates, roughly, to “ancient enemy;” A kind of ugly systemic hatred captured in a beautiful and dangerous word. Something that fit the story nicely. Mike offered up the title, to write the rest of the story, to expand on the use of non-English languages, and to color the thing, but Matt was writing to submit to an anthology that wanted a short story with black and white art. Perhaps Anasazi was not meant to be.
Luckily, “Others” was rejected. And, this freed it to become “Anasazi”. Matt’s original story became the first two chapters(“Anasazi” and “Fisterra”), and over the next year or so Mike wrote 14 more, each with its own non-English word/phrase title, some of which like “Anasazi” are also exonyms--names given to one culture by another-- while the two slowly built out the characters, their languages, and their colorful world. A few more years of story boarding, illustrating, and coloring 16 chapters and 212 pages and voila! (“look there!”) We’re ready to share what we think is a challenging and unique graphic novel with you.

Risks and challenges
Creating a unique graphic novel is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. But, not to worry, we've run several printing related campaigns and have worked out all the details with the same domestic printer we used for our previous hardcover graphic novel "Book of Da."
As of press time, storyboards are complete, all pages are penciled, and 10 pages remain to be inked and colored. No big. After 5 years in the making, this thing is as good as done!
Printing and mailing take time and we have accounted for that in our delivery estimate. Our goal reflects the minimum amount needed to make this project viable. Full color graphic novels can be expensive to print, but get cheaper with volume. Let's make it happen together!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
