We game like we are ancient Bards.
It is about the story, the imagery, the experience that becomes so real it winds its way into the collective story of our friends and ends up being a running gag or nostalgic sweet memory at the next gather.
But sometimes this is not an easy mark to hit. New people, multi-generational games, new systems and time constraints requiring pre-generated characters can all lead to a less than ideal game experience.
We started throwing in assisting tools to get the focus off the dice and onto the story. Things like integrated power point slides running in the background, subtle plot clues in chosen mood music and slips of paper with little hints for each character. Then the slips of paper became index cards and then - Role vs Roll was born.
OBJECT OF THE DECK
The deck is a tool to assist players in practicing their ROLE-playing ability. It can assist players to create a depth of character, improve both Player and Gamemaster (GM) experiences and help bond a group of new or unfamiliar players. The deck is designed as a non-disruptive, in-game device that provides the GM with an optional system of rewards to incentivise interactive role-playing, generating a better game story for all involved.
OUR CURRENT EQUIPMENT LIST
The basic deck is a 31 card deck. We have at least 40 cards currently designed and more in development. The final number of cards in the box will be determined by our backers and our stretch goals up to 42 cards.
The deck is designed as a system neutral tool. The cards are purposely ambiguous in order to leave room for creative interpretation. This allows for differing game systems, genres, GM styles and player experience levels.
We have a crap cracked screen computer and attention demanding full time day jobs. Decks must be produced in bulk, so all the art needs to be final before we can release the full colour home print version (in 2 formats for US or A4 formatting) or order production. We need a system upgrade. We need to use our leave time to finalise production. And we need you to cheer us on!
DISADVANTAGE (-2 for location)
We apologise in advance that shipping is so costly. We live in Australia and our production vendor is in China but only accepts US currency payments - so we have to adjust for our currency exchange as well as postage and handling to us in OZ and then the final delivery postage to wherever you may be.
ADVANTAGE (+1 for determination)
But if we hit our goal, we will use our vacation leave to finalise the art and order the production. How much leave we take will be determined by whether or not we need to meet our stretch goals. We would LOVE to take 2 weeks off to revamp and upgrade the entire deck's art.
And we will rely on you. Already our beta deck has been improved by art choice surveys and the twittersphere critics cadre. Keep those comments flowing. This is a community. We will achieve world peace when we all learn to play together.
Here is a little bit about us -
We are gamers, geeks, parents, artists, professionals and creative souls just a bit over having to adult. Read all our blogs here.
And here are the CARDS (titles) we have generated so far:
(AKA STRETCH GOALS)
$25,000 BASIC GOAL
We will finalise and deliver a deck of at least 31 cards. the JackMonkey plus any other cards guaranteed by pledge commitments and then enough cards to fill out the base 31 number. The exact cards we include might just be determined by you - so stay tuned for poles.
+200 over the basic goal up tp $27,000
For every $200 in excess of the basic goal, we will add another card. Up to 42 cards (we know - the maths is wrong - so you get one more for free because 42 is always the answer)
$30,000 All NEW ART
We will overhaul ALL the art based on the results of a backer pole (don’t worry you Charismatic/Villains/Gods – we will keep you, but we will make you stronger – better – faster)
$35,000 – Time Bandits
Once Imp stops me from quitting my day job and I schedule 2 weeks of leave time, I will have enough time on my hands to
- Update all the art
- Film and post a video of a live Homeworlds session using pre generated characters and the cards
- Blog/snapchat/periscope my progress and art process
Risks and challenges
There is never enough time ..... and the biggest risk we face is being the victims of our success. Our stretch goals are aptly named. They will challenge us to produce more content, improve our art and expand our product line.
This requires teamwork, planning, administration and artistic ability. It will also mean taking time off work. But we have been accumulating our leave. And Imp can even buy more if she needs to.
Kev is an artist, photographer and prior art software trainer - so production is not a problem when the time and equipment exists.
"Imp" is a copyright lawyer, legal editor and project administrator. We got the time and project management and administrative hurdles covered.
This is our first time outta the gate - so we admit that we are learning as we go. We are quick studies - but our timelines may be impacted by third party vendors and we just don't have the experience to predict that well.
We hope to overcome that challenge by seeking mentorship from experienced producers and tolerance from our backers. If we can get this right - there will be more projects in the future.
As for teamwork - well we managed the Kickstarter launch without a divorce - and the final push weekend was kinda romantic .... so if our marriage survived raising teens, putting Imp through Law school and relocating countries - a little card game should be doable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
