'Seed to Son' is a short, sci-fi/horror film about growth; from the renewed relationship between a father and his son, to the botanical curiosity that brings them together. To give you an idea of what we're going for, think of it as a mix of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' and 'Alien'; a short story where things seem a bit 'off' in the neighborhood with a ghastly surprise for the person too curious for their own good.
The film is produced through 11/10 Productions, a company I established in Rochester, NY. It's our first independent narrative project that is completely shot in the Rochester area and we are quite excited to see it completed and to share it with everyone.
The funds we are raising will go towards production costs, primarily to building the plant. With your help, we'll be able to create a realistic and terrifying plant an audience will fear instead of a b-movie weed that will make them chuckle. We took the time to create the entire life-cycle of this species, even its evolutionary history, and hope all of this detail and planning will help us create a 5 foot, beautiful monstrosity.
Besides the plant, we have a lot of makeup effects to prepare - body casting and moldings, roots, vines, and decomposing bodies; this plant is leaving quite a mess in its path!
There are also the fees that Kickstarter and Amazon apply when we successfully meet our goal. Kickstarter takes 5% and Amazon takes from 3-5% for processing the pledges. So meeting our $5,000 goal will be great, but exceeding that would be even better. And yes, we can exceed our goal, which would definitely help the film in post-production (renting a studio for sound design) and distribution. It all adds up to a better film for the audience!
We plan to complete and release the film this Fall and submit it to film festivals, backyard screenings, and anyone else who is into horror films and wants to see it. The more the merrier!
Mark A. Zuniga - Writer/Director
Filmmaker, juggler, and a rather decent baker, Mark has been happy that his films have screened in places such as Milan and The Hague and hopes that his future films continue to attract such attention.
Tyler Gilbert - Director of Photography
Tyler has had his hands in a few films, the most recent being the unnerving Tandem.
Scott Randall - Special Effects
Scott made a life-size horse once and is deftly experienced in the ways of making the body appear to be in excruciating pain. His work can be found here.
Dan Lilker - Composer
Dan is mostly known for his work in metal bands like Nuclear Assault, Brutal Truth, S.O.D. and Rochester black metal terrors Nokturnal Hellstorm. He has previously worked with Mark on the quirky short: Red Balloon 2
Sawyer Duserick as Tom
Sawyer's been in a handful of stage work, including 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'Oliver!'. He plays our protagonist, Tom, the son who tries to get to know his father.
David Shaw as Frank
David's done a lot of work as a sports announcer and several commercials and films. He takes on the role of Frank, Tom's father, who is trying his best to be a good dad.
We have some fun things for you, depending on your pledge. From handmade USB drives with bonus content from the film, an illustrated poster depicting the life-cycle of the plant, and even an encased tentacle to display on your mantel! Posters and designs all come from the brilliant hands of John Magnus Champlin, fellow horror film fan and bacon lover. Plus all pledges will gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access! Watch us build the plant, check out our designs and the different stages we went through to arrive at our final monster.
Risks and challenges
While this isn't our first rodeo, our experience has taught us that unforeseen events may occur. Weather is a big factor for our project as much of the film will take place outdoors, which might delay production but will surely not end it. We have already begun production and, with the funds we raise here, will be finished with production by the end of August.
We have set a deadline on the rewards for December since a few of the items are handmade and it will take us some time to ensure that we provide you the best experience we can achieve. We will aim to ship them as soon as they're ready to go. Thank you in advance for your patience!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
