Does FAT make you FAT?
Is sugar TOXIC?
Should BREAD be BANNED?
What the hell has Cholesterol PARTICLE SIZE got to do with HEART DISEASE?
Cereal Killers is the feature length documentary film with all the answers.
The film follows Donal - a lean, fit, seemingly healthy 41 year old man – on a quest to hack his genes and drop dead healthy by avoiding the heart disease and diabetes that has afflicted his family.
Donal’s father Kevin, an Irish gaelic football star from the 1960s, won the first of 2 All Ireland Championships with the Down Senior Football Team in 1960 before the biggest crowd (94,000) ever seen at an Irish sporting event.
When Kevin suffered a heart attack later in life, family and friends were shocked. How does a lean, fit and seemingly healthy man - who has sailed through cardiac stress tests - suddenly fall victim to heart disease?
The film asks and answers:
IS DONAL NEXT?
After 2 years of intensive personal research, experimentation and planning, he configures a highly controversial food plan designed to "hack" his genes.
Cereal Killers follows Donal's 100,000 calorie, high fat, 28 day food plan to test his shocking conclusions on camera, under the strict medical supervision of world famous scientist Prof Tim Noakes MD.
Award winning Director of Photography Raja Nundlall and Director Yolanda Barker got involved and the cameras rolled on Cereal Killers in Cape Town, South Africa, in June 2012.
But Professor Tim Noakes MD didn't just observe....
He threw open the doors to his resources AND his mind.
Find out WHY
- he believes everything we know about nutrition is WRONG.
- he wishes he could tear out a chapter in his best selling book "Lore of Running."
You might even see him do that ;)
Why not join his 20,000 person conversation to see why he will compel, fascinate and possibly even infuriate you.
His colleagues at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSIA) provided a wealth of expertise and support throughout the 28 day period of observation.
The effervescent Dr Gabrielle Prinsloo orchestrated and assessed more "before and after" tests than we knew possible - including the very latest DNA analysis which identified Donal's genetic fault lines.
Cholesterol was tackled as it should be - with much more comprehensive testing than traditionally applied.
Resting Metabolism results will stoke the"when is a calorie not a calorie"debate and the impact on Donal's lean muscle mass and body fat alone merits a long hard look at what we think we know about nutrition.
After that, we grabbed Donal’s fascinating results and took it all back home to the UK and Ireland.
Cardiologist Dr Colm Hanratty saved Kevin O’Neill’s life. What will HE think of Donal’s controversial approach?
Dr John Briffa
- author of Amazon UK's Number 1 health bestseller "Escape the Diet Trap," has been confronting conventional medical wisdom for years @ www.drbriffa.com.
He thinks fresh squeezed OJ, muesli and low fat milk is no way to start the day, but would he frown at all that FAT Donal ate?
The more we filmed, the better this film wanted to be.
We put Raj on the Cereal Killer food plan to keep his energy levels up for a run of 18 hour days with those cameras. He dropped 2 belt sizes and bagged 40 hours of raw footage along the way.
If there was an Oscar for Most Passionate Young Director, Yola is in the running.
We cut a PROMO and kept going.
But we needed more to do justice to the story emerging before us. We needed more hands on deck!
Rowan McKevitt at Climate Design helped us nail down a "wow" visual concept.
That lead to another call to Garrett O'Hare at Hey Creative. It went something like this.
"Howya Garrett. I need to fill a coffin with cornflakes for a photoshoot"
"I know a man in the death business. Leave it with me."
2 days laterI got a text from Garrett.
"I'm driving through the town with your coffin in the back of a transit van. You owe me a drink."
Some people just get stuff done and that's how we have got so far already.
Enter the young award winning film maker Joe Madden. He's working on a show you may know called Game of Thrones so this was a piece of cake! We got busy filling Joe's coffin with cornflakes and Rowan McKevitt got busy directing the shoot.
The iconic Cereal Killers cover shot was born!
Hey, if Big Cereal can put refined crap in a suitably designed box then tell you nice stories to sell it, why can't we put that same refined crap in a box, throw Donal in there, tell you our story and ask you to support REAL FOOD instead?
Of course we can!
And we're very nearly there.
We just need to nail the Editing and Post Production!
.....and that's why we're here!!!!
So HOW MUCH do we need and what’s it for?
Right now we’re in the EDIT suite and we need some stuff like nice tunes, third party footage and better graphics.
We have folks working magic with limited resources but we still need £7,500 to get us over the line and all the way to a 60 minute broadcast quality production.
Every £ counts and £10,000 means we can get it done that bit better.
With £15,000 we’ll cover an Official Premiere launch and once we hit
it’s all about shouting out louder – to film festivals, broadcasters, distributors AND our friends over at Big Food and Big Pharma.
That's when the fun really starts!!!
The coffin hits the road for screenings - maybe to a venue near you - with Donal (and all those cornflakes) in it. Tell us where you are and let's see if we can take the story to you!
So hop on board! How cool will it be to kickstart a Real Food Movement with a sting in the tail for Big Food AND grab your very own listing in our Cornflake Hall of Fame alongside the Godfathers of Good Sense and Real Food - Noakes, Briffa et al.
Oh....and it would be kinda cool to have Gwyneth Paltrow do a voiceover. We loved her in Iron Man 3 and we really like how she champions eggs and real food. So if you see Gwyneth do please ask her is she'd like to hang out with Tim Noakes won't you? Thanks! :)
So! Are you ready to cause some trouble?
LET'S START A STORM.......
Risks and challenges
If you've ever owned and maintained an old thing of beauty like a car or a bike or a musical instrument then you'll know a bit about film making.
Post production is where the magic can really happen. It's the tinkering for perfection; the oiling of the chains, the tuning of the piano, the tension in the strings. It's an event and a process all at once. We take things apart, adopt different approaches, nurture and massage to get it just right. It's the storm before the calm and WE'RE IN IT NOW.
The real risk for Cereal Killers is that we don't do justice to a compelling story by giving this process EVERYTHING we can. We want to wake the sleeping giants of bad health. Big Cereal and Big Pharma didn't return our calls or emails. But with your eyes SEEING them, your ears HEARING them and our collective voice SPEAKING to them, they cannot continue to ignore what Cereal Killers dishes up. No storm means No noise. No noise means No impact.
And THAT is our challenge. To make a small film POWERFUL enough to make the big guys stand up and answer.
Sometimes the only difference between a really great independent film and a movie blockbuster is the size of the audience.
So...don't just THINK DIFFERENT.
