What Is The Cookening?

The Cookening is a top-down perspective action-adventure game patterned after 2D classics from the 1980s and 1990s, drawing inspiration from games like The Legend of Zelda.

You play as Master Chef, world-class superstar of the culinary arts. Your mission is to find a long-lost magic book of recipes called the OmNomNomicon, hidden away in a distant land. The book is in the hands of your old arch-rival, Victor FonDoom, who is holed up in the depths of his exclusive restaurant-dungeon.

Master Chef, the game's protagonist
Master Chef, the game's protagonist

In order to gain access to FonDoom's lair, Chef must prove his worth by being awarded 5 stars by the ancient Culinary Council, granting him the prestige necessary to confront FonDoom and win the book.

But getting the 5 stars won't be easy—Chef will need to earn the stars by finding tokens of courage located in dungeons scattered around the game world, and bringing them back to the Council. Finding the dungeons is up to you. And along the way, you will also need to find tools and upgrades to give Chef the abilities necessary to deal with the trials before him.

FonDoom, the game's villain
FonDoom, the game's villain

The Cookening features a large overworld with dungeons scattered throughout; at the start of the game, your character can only access certain portions of the map. By exploring the world and its dungeons, you'll find tools that allow you to access more portions of the world map, and give you the abilities you need to conquer later dungeons. You'll also gain upgraded weapons that allow you to fight more powerful monster types.

Combat is handled in real-time; press a button, swing your weapon.  There's a basic economy, and you can upgrade your health over the course of the game, but there aren't extensive amounts of RPG elements to bog down the game.  Puzzles are also kept to a relative minimum.  The emphasis here is on combat, exploration, and re-traversal, not micromanagement.

It's a pretty classic game design--one that countless fans have come to enjoy over the last several generations of gaming.  There's a bit of a twist, though--food plays a major thematic role in the game, and influences the visual and mechanical design of The Cookening.  Characters, weapons, environments, and items are all inspired by food.

So instead of a sword and shield, you swing a rolling pin, and deflect attacks with a cutting board. For your tools, you get items like a magical banana that returns to you when you throw it.  And a gun that launches potatoes.   Your “bombs” are bottles of fizzy soda.  You get a brulee torch that can burn down obstacles.  A lasso made of pasta noodles.  You get all the kinds of tools you'd expect to find in an adventure type of game--but with a fun little spin.

Also, since Chef is a chef, his cooking skills also come into play. You can find ingredients and recipes, and take them to a kitchen to cook food items that you can use as powerups.  The more ingredients and recipes you find, the more powerups you can get.   The more Stars you've earned over the course of the game, the more powerful the effects become.

And, of course, the food theme is also represented in the environments and enemies you will encounter. You'll find dungeons that are patterned after gingerbread houses, or 1950s diners.   You'll explore a swamp made out of chocolate and marshmallows, and forests of broccoli trees.   A mountain made of cake, and caverns of toffee and peanut brittle.

And the monsters use food themes as well. You'll encounter villains who use food as weapons, and some that are literally made of food.  You'll fight bad guys like the Gobblins and Porcs, who wield forks and knives and shishkebob skewers. You'll run into living gingerbread men, monsters made out of chocolate pudding, and meatball spiders with pasta noodle legs.

Lastly, we're taking a unique approach to our sound design.  Instead of the usual samples you'd find in any effects library, our sound effects are all instrumental in nature, and quite fun to listen to.  Also, our music is composed of multiple layers, that can be faded in and out as the situation changes, creating a dynamic, exciting aesthetic mechanism.

How Much Game is There?

The Cookening has a large overworld spanning approximately 48 maps (not counting subterranean areas); the overworld will contain 9 dungeons.  Each dungeon would take between 15 minutes and 1 hour to complete, with early dungeons being shorter and less complex than later dungeons.  Plus, the overworld also contains a number of hidden secrets, as well as vendors that sell unique merchandise.

The player will have access to 3 different grades of melee weapon, as well as 3 different grades of protective shield.  The player can also equip roughly a dozen unique tools, which provide properties such as new attack methods, or means of traversing the world map.  The player will be required to collect most of the tools in order to complete the game, though a few tools are optional.

Additionally, the player will also be able to prepare approximately a dozen different recipes, each of which has a unique effect (such as health restoration, or stopping time).  The player can carry several recipes at a time--assuming he or she has found the containers necessary to store food.  Also, recipes can't be prepared unless the player has both the recipe formula and the ingredients it uses--thorough exploration of the game world is necessary to find all of these items.

There will be roughly 30 different enemy types throughout the overworld and dungeons, not counting boss monsters.  Many of the monsters are designed to be unique to a single dungeon in order to enhance the theme of the dungeon; others will be used throughout the game.  Each dungeon will have its own special boss, requiring a specific method of attack to defeat, as well as creative usage of the tools you've encountered so far.  We also want to include mini-boss monsters, though these may not make the initial release unless we hit some of our stretch goals.

How Do You Play It?

The current target platform for our initial release is PC; we plan to release on Steam and other comparable digital distribution methods (though we are also offering physical copies as a pledge reward).

The game is designed so that it can be played either using a conventional gamepad (like the Xbox 360 controller), or by using a keyboard alone.

We hope to port to other platforms later; see our Stretch Goals section for details.

When Will It Launch?

We plan to launch the game by April 2013.

Why Kickstarter?

Awesome Towne is a self-funded startup with no ties to any publishers or developers.  We're a small team of four core members, and we are paying for the development of this game out of our own pockets.  We don't have a big rich company giving us financial backing to produce this.  So we basically need funding to pay for our expenses while we work--and to pay for any contract work that we can't handle ourselves (like our sound design, for example).  Funding will also allow us to accelerate the process of development by hiring additional artists and designers to offset our workload.  Additional funding beyond our target goal will allow us to add more content, improving the quality of the product.

Luckily, our game doesn't rely upon high-priced artists and designers to complete, as we are doing the bulk of the work ourselves.  So we don't need huge sums of money to finish the project.  Still, any funding we DO receive will be highly beneficial to the speed and quality with which we can complete this project.  The more money we get, the better a job we can do.  So do us a favor and make a contribution--any little bit will help.  You'll be glad you did!

We may even call you back in the morning.

So, what are our funding goals, and what can you expect from each?

This is our baseline goal.  This is the minimum that we want to collect in order to be able to fund all of our planned content for the game.  This includes:

  • 9 dungeons (8 primary dungeons, plus final 9th dungeon)
  • expansive Overworld
  • Almost 30 monsters
  • nearly a dozen tools
  • a dozen recipes to prepare
  • 3 different versions of weapon and shield

This pretty much fulfills our basic vision of what should be included in the game. You'll be looking at between 10 to 20 hours of gameplay if we hit this goal.  That's a lot of game.  But we've got plans for more if we get enough funding...

If we reach a goal of $15,000, we can add the following features:

  • Achievements

We want to integrate Achievements into the game. Ideally, these will be official Steam Achievements that can be viewed publicly, and tie into your account.

  • A Mini-boss for every dungeon
  • More themed monsters

Also, we want to make sure that every dungeon has a unique mini-boss.  Every one of the game's 8 primary dungeons is going to have a unique final boss, but if we get enough funding, we can add a mini-boss to each dungeon.  Plus, we can also create more uniquely themed monsters to fit the atmosphere of each dungeon, increasing variety.

If we reach a goal of $25,000, this is what we will add:

  • Additional difficulty settings

Additional difficulty settings will be created to give expert gamers a challenge.

  • Additional narrative

This isn't a heavily story-driven game, but it does feature some humorous characters, and we would like to explore their personalities further.  With additional funding, we can create artwork and dialog for storytelling sequences to enhance the narrative.

  • Native 1080p support

The artwork is currently drawn in HD to support 720p resolution.  With funding, we can implement native support for 1080p, maximizing the quality of high-definition displays.

  • Porting to different platforms

We want our game to be available on as many platforms as possible--but porting costs money.   We'll need money for development hardware and possible licensing fees.  We have interest in porting to the following platforms:

  • Xbox 360 (XBLA or Indie Games release)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS
  • PSN and/or PS Mobile
  • Wii U and/or 3DS

Which platforms we port to will be dependent on how much money we get.  Also note that any ports will follow the PC release - we need to get the PC version done first before we convert it over to any other platforms.

If we reach $40,000, then we will add these features:

  • Localization

We'll pay to have all the in-game text translated to PEFIGS compliance (Portuguese, English, French, Italian, German & Spanish).  This will allow international audiences to enjoy our game more easily.

  • New Overworld Region
  • New Dungeon
  • New Items & Recipes

We'll add an extra region to the game world with additional content for you to enjoy. The region and dungeon won't be part of the story progression, but will be an optional area for players to explore, separate from the main world.  The new items and recipes you find there can be brought back to the main game world to use alongside all the original content.

If we reach a goal of $50,000, then we can add the following features:

  • 2nd Quest

In the spirit of the original Legend of Zelda, we'll add a unique second quest. This quest will feature a remixed overworld, with dungeons in different locations, as well as redesigned dungeon layouts; items and tools will be found in different places, changing the flow of the game significantly. This will result in a substantially different experience!

  • Cheats/Mutators

We'll add in special cheat modes that modify the gameplay in unique (and surprising) ways, or allow you to begin with certain tools and items already unlocked at the start of a new game.  These can be combined with the various difficulty settings to create a highly personalized experience!

Risks and challenges

Our primary challenge is getting the game done by the date we've chosen. We're not relying on contractors or hired help for the bulk of the game design, so we don't need to pay people just to keep the project alive. That being said, we do have contractors to help speed up our development. So if our funding runs short, then we'll have to delay the project while we look for more income--but, we can keep working on the game during this time, just at a slower pace. The worst-case scenario is that the game is delayed a couple months--until, say, June or July. Cancellation of the project is not a possibility.

Also, if we reach our stretch goals for additional content, this could add a bit of extra development time onto the schedule. To combat this, we could always hire contractors to take care of the needed work.
