Dreams - especially creative ones - are thrilling and inspiring. They test your belief in yourself and launch a roller coaster ride. Sounds crazy, right?! And yet, here I am…
I'm going for it!
Recording and releasing this EP means so much to me for many reasons. It’s an opportunity for me to share some of the songs I’ve written in recent years, work with an amazing group of talented friends, head back into the recording studio after a long hiatus…the list goes on. But most importantly, it’s a chance for me to kick start this next phase of my life, one in which I finally get to pick up where I had to leave off.
A few years ago, I had to pause everything related to singing and my music. It was one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences, but it was necessary at the time. For a long while, our family had to overcome some major medical and financial hurdles, and we all had to make sacrifices in order to lend a hand. I put a lot of things on hold so that I could focus on and support my family, but that didn’t mean I stopped dreaming. Now that my family is thankfully in a much better place, God willing – and with the help of the Kickstarter community – I get to go after my dream!
An incredibly gifted and passionate team of people have already partnered with me to help bring this EP to fruition. I am so grateful for them! The money that I’m trying to raise will go towards paying them and covering everything else involved with releasing an EP. I’m aiming to raise $14,000 for this project. This amount will help cover the costs for the recording studio and recording equipment rental, the producer, and the musicians, as well as the costs to edit, mix, master, design, duplicate, print, and finally, ship the EP. Whew, that was a mouthful! As you can see, so much is involved in a project such as this, and it requires so many people!
Here's to living brave...
I can’t do this alone, which has been both scary and humbling. I need your help and want to partner with all of you to do this together, which is why I’ve decided to turn to Kickstarter! And the way Kickstarter works, we won't be able to get any of the funds if we can't meet the full goal. Talk about a leap of faith! But, I'm choosing faith instead of fear.
THANK YOU for visiting this page, for watching the video, for taking the time to learn about my story and what I’m trying to do, and for considering partnering with me and joining the journey. I am SO very thankful and excited!
What do you sound like?
Good question! Here’s a YouTube video I did recently with some friends. It’s a cover of Etta James’ “Sunday Kind of Love,” and it’s something fun we did together on the side. I'm also the one singing in the background of the Kickstarter video!
What will the EP sound like?
The EP will consist of four songs that I’ve written in recent years. As for the style and genre, imagine a cross of Adele, Sara Bareilles, and Norah Jones. It’ll be soulful, heartfelt, and honest. You can hear a sneak peek of one of the songs in the Kickstarter video!
Jane Kim is a singer based in San Francisco by way of New York. She grew up in a very musical home thanks to her mom who was a choir director and a dad whose record collection included Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel, and Queen.
Jane first began singing professionally in high school. A Grammy-nominated producer in her hometown of Redding, CT, called and asked her to sing on a few albums for him. During her college years in Boston, she regularly performed in jazz clubs, restaurants, and talent showcases. In 2007, Jane competed in the Boston PopSearch vocal competition and made it to the Sweet 16. One of the highlights of the entire experience for her was performing on the main stage of the Boston Symphony Hall accompanied by musicians from the Boston Pops! (Video of live performance available here)
When Jane moved to New York for a job at RCA Records, she was privileged to join a loving and encouraging community of artist friends and musicians who became her regular collaborators. Many of them are involved in the making of this EP.
About two and a half years ago, Jane moved to San Francisco. It was in San Francisco that the dream of making this EP was reborn.
Risks and challenges
We are currently planning to digitally release the EP at the end of March and ship out the physical copies in April. If there are any hiccups in production or any delays at all, I'll definitely keep you updated along the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
