About

You are a daemon fighting for dominance over your fellow daemons. You have set your sights on the city of Ninebridges and are vying to possess its denizens in order to wage war against other daemons and the remaining free-willed inhabitants.

Possession lets you scheme to outsmart your opponents as you wreak havoc in Ninebridges. Possession is an easy-to-learn and fast-to-play strategic card game for 2 to 4 players.

Alberto and Antoine are passionate gamers and they created Crooked Tower to design games they longed for that no-one seemed to be making. In Possession, you can finally enjoy being the bad guys corrupting gullible humans.

The Possession box contains (all photos show prototypes):

The rule book explains the rules with examples, shows the anatomy of each kind of card and provides a glossary highlighting each one of the game's keywords. It also comes with a map of Ninebridges and pages of background introducing this brand-new fantasy setting, some of its history and that of its population. It also contains a variant of the rules for solo play

Controlling as many Victims as you can is the main goal of the game. New Victims are drawn at the beginning of each turn, and players can control them if their Possession Value is equal or higher than the Victims' Willpower. But be careful! Some Victims can increase their Willpower, and some Equipment and Event cards will make them more resilient to your attempt at controlling them!

A close look at some location cards

Location Cards are drawn every turn, each one representing a place in Ninebridges, or in the surrounding countryside. In addition to setting the scene for the action to come, these cards make each turn unique, as every Location has specific rules and interacts with the Victims and the Players in various ways.

Each Daemon represents a Player in the game. Daemons all have different stories and rules, and a starting Possession Value to help you control Victims.

Reference cards are a quick, easy way to help you out with the turn sequence and the meaning of some symbols.

The Game Deck is where Players draw their hands, and it's full of unique cards designed to make your life simpler, and your opponents' harder. The staples of the Game Deck are the Possession Cards, with which you increase your Possession Value, allowing you to control more Victims. Use Nemeses and Heroes to attack your opponents' Victims: play them tactically and you can slay a Victim in one quick fight! Equipment Cards can either make your Victims stronger (arming them with weapons and armour) or weaker (a Victim with a Book of Psalms will be harder to control). Finally, Event cards can disrupt your opponents' plans, they are truly powerful when used at the right time!

The Time Token, tossed like a coin at the beginning of each turn, will determine whether it is Day or Night, affecting the game and some cards in very specific ways.

The Narrator is the Player who draws cards for the turn, and the Narrator Token is used to remind you who currently fulfils that role.

Finally, the game comes with an A4 board and tokens for everyone to keep track of their Possession value and the Willpower of their victims.

Each player plays a Daemon, represented by a Daemon card like the one below.

In the game deck, you find a number of types of cards that you can play from your hand: equipment cards to make your victims stronger, event cards to wreak havoc in your opponents plans, nemesis cards to attack the other Daemons victims and Possession cards to increase your possession value and possess more victims.

You can also get a preview of the rules here (pdf download)

We are working on translating the rulebook. The translation will be available as pdf downloads on our website (the english version will also be available). The translations are already in the works are french and italian, we are currently looking for translators for a german and a spanish version.

Solo Mode

While the main rules are designed for 2-4 players, Appendix 1 of the rule book allows you to play in solo mode, a challenge that makes you face the heroes of Ninebridges as they relentlessy hunt you and the victims you possess! You can find a review of the solo mode on Both Sides of My Table.

Campaign mode

The game comes with a 4 missions campaign, each with specific card. Campaign mode allows you to mix competitive play with collaborative play as all players have to work towards meeting a common goal while still competing to be the Daemon who possessed the most villagers!

The Narrator

We partnered with Atlantis Miniatures to bring you the narrator miniature which you can use as a replacement for the narrator token. Dan Jack, the lead designer at Atlantis Miniatures has sculpted the model for us. It will be produced as a 28mm resin miniature.

The narrator miniature is available in our Imp and a mini reward (to add it to other rewards, just add £10 to your pledge).

Read a review of Possession, including the solo mode on Both Sides of My Table. Below are a few chosen pieces:

"Crooked tower bring us a small scale card game of Daemonic possession in and around the Civitas of Ninebridges."

"There is a distinct feel of ancient malevolence without an overly graphic visual. By that I mean that it hints at the evil intent but does not rely on overly disturbing realistic gore or horror and in dealing with the subject matter in this way, for me, actually adds to the dark nature of the game."

"The cards and rule book look to have a lavish finish and I suspect wont change in quality."

"The rule book is presented in a thirty five lavishly produced A5 page booklet with numerous game component illustrations and a considerable amount of backstory to help set the scene for us. The various elements/components and game mechanics are detailed in their own sections of the booklet, indicating how they are used and how this affects the gameplay."

"A theme of daemonic possession does not suit everyone but as the game is less about Daemon theology and more about a slightly more abstracted strategy/hand-management, the theme becomes less about horror and more about challenge."

"What can I say? This game is rubbish…well I am a daemon, after all… No, not at all. Don’t believe him! Both me and myself found this to be a particularly good transition from competitive multiplayer to solo variant. I might even say that with the few small changes to play, it actually offers a more thematic and engaging challenge than multiplayer variant… although I do see the draw/pull towards competitive daemon possession. As such, with no respect for the human soul of BSoMT’’s 1d8 die, Possession takes full control of the die and forces it to roll a (7)…and this is based on the base game. As a light card game, it will not satisfy those seeking a heavy Euro experience but for the rest of us, especially with the prospect of all that the expansions have to offer, I think (if I ever get chance to try them out) we could be looking at some unnatural daemonic possession above an 8?"

Board Game Inquisition has also done a preview of the game on their youtube channel:

We have also been endorsed by CardsOrDie on Twitter (@CardsOrDie): "I'm scared not to back it now!!"

Before we even reach the stretch goals, we will release bonus material when we reach certain milestones!
The first bonus will be unlocked when we reach 100 backers: we will create an additional mission for the campaign (5 to 7 extra cards) that will be included with the game at all pledge level.

We will introduce further bonus material when we meet the 100 backers goal!

We have reached 100 backers and we created "The King of One Hundred Sins" mission which allows you to unlock an additional Daemon that then becomes playable in the rest of the game. Here is a preview of the new Daemon card:
We will unlock another brand new mission when we reach 125 backers and another one when we reach 150 backers! Spread the word to help us get there!

Each of the mission stretch goal comes with 5 new cards.

A Lust for Magic expansion comes with 81 cards and additional tokens along with new rules to introduce spells in your games of Possession.

The gaming mat replaces the board that is in the base game for a more luxurious gaming experience.

International shipping is probably the most complex part of a Kickstarter project like ours. It is where local regulations and taxes can surprise you.

We have done a lot of preparation to ensure that the shipping of our project goes smoothly and is as cheap as possible for backers. Below you can find a breakdown of estimated shipping costs for all locations. Please keep in mind that these are costs charged AFTER THE CAMPAIGN ENDS in the pledge manager.

Why Kickstarter?

Creating and manufacturing a board game has a cost. Kickstarter affords us the opportunity to focus most of our upfront investment on the game and to delay paying for the manufacturing with the funds raised from the campaign. This means a better, more polished game for you.

We have worked very hard to make Possession and we hope that you will want to back us and get your very own copy of the game!

Retailers

Of course, we love retailers! Contact us at info@crooked-tower.com for prices. Please keep in mind that we deliver to our Kickstarter backers first and only then to retailers. About the creators

About us

Possession is a card game created by Crooked Tower. Crooked Tower is a start-up company based in London. It was co-founded by Alberto Federighi and Antoine Vernet. Crooked Tower designs high quality games for demanding gamers. We aim to provide an exciting and surprising gaming experience for both beginners and experienced gamers.

Game designer, Alberto Federighi-Lucifero, has been playing board games for as long as he can remember. Hailing from Tuscany, he settled in London after living and working in Italy, the US and the UK. Alberto worked for a famous game company for a few years before leaving to set up Crooked Tower.

Antoine Vernet grew up in the French Alps, where he got into gaming after stumbling upon Necromunda. He joined forces with Alberto to bring their shared goal of creating new and exciting games to fruition. In addition to his role in game development, he holds the purse strings. As an example, he vetoed using gold coins as tokens (imagine the cost of shipping...).

Giovanni Bianchi hails from Tuscany, land of artists, and was introduced the world of drawing and illustrating at an early age. Working on Possession, he had to reinvent his style to meet Alberto’s vision, and found inspiration in Flemish art (mostly Bruegel and Bosch) and in the classic fantasy artwork of the '80s.

Julien Lemesre is a native of the Alps, and loves the smell of After Effects in the morning. He is our motion graphic artist and video editor.

Risks and challenges

As with any project, there are risk and challenges, but in the year leading up to this Kickstarter campaign, we have done our best to make sure we have minimised the risks and prepared ourselves for the challenges ahead.
We rely on a fantastic team of artists and designers for all the game's elements. We are working with top manufacturers with a history of successfully delivering similar projects.

Throughout the campaign and the fulfilment, we will be sure to keep you appraised. We will regularly share our progress with you, as well as the challenges we face and how we plan to overcome them.
