Hacker Scouts needs to develop our Oakland headquarters to better serve the Bay Area and successfully prototype national projects

We Did it!

We are so excited that we would like to offer two stretch goals! Over and over we are approached by museums, libraries, and schools about integrating the Hacker Scout ideas and activities into their institutions. We would LOVE to be able to provide a more formal means of support. If we meet our stretch goals, we will provide an entire packet (one for museums/libraries and one for teachers) that includes information on bringing making and hacking into the classroom, etc, how to approach administration around the value of this kind of learning, how to assess learning outcomes, how to partner with other organizations, how to find mentors, how to build a makerspace for kids, and how to encourage engagement, confidence, and self-direction in your students. This packet will also include our recess club as well as other vetted resources and Hacker Scouts lesson plans, all in one place ! We can do all of this if we reach our stretch goal of $40,000. Only $5000 more! If we reach $44,000, we will offer 10 schools an opportunity to participate in our outreach program at no cost! Will you help spread the word so we can add these awesome benefits?

Who we are:

Hacker Scouts is a national non-profit organization, founded in the Fall of 2012 in Oakland, California, that focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) education, skill building and community engagement. We aspire to help children develop skills in the areas they are truly interested in, abilities that would allow them to pursue on their own goals and achieve their own vision.

Our Project:

For the past year, we have been partnered with a fantastic hackerspace, but our programs have been so popular that we’ve outgrown the space. We have signed a lease on a great location in Oakland and will be adding to the city's ever growing and industrious Maker culture!

In Oakland alone, we have an average of 70-90 kids every Open Lab. We currently have one Guild running, with over 70 kids on the wait list. We need to open at least three more Guilds to serve this need! We also have a full wait list already for our new Sparks program and schools lined up for our outreach programs.

We are working with partners in our community, such as The Workshop for Young Engineers, who will be running engineering and technology classes for kids in our space, the Crafty Avenger, who will be adding amazing sewing and e-textile workshops to our programming, Young Makers for mentoring Faire projects and The Maker Education Initiative to support educators in integrating STEAM and making into community programs and schools.

Together, we are creating an Oakland Lab that is both practical and exciting! This space is significant and we need your help! As the Hacker Scouts National Headquarters it will serve more than the Bay Area. Programs and activities designed by Hacker Scouts, as well as our partners, are often prototyped and tested in Oakland and released open source to benefit the global making community.

If funded your support will give our families access to equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters and fund low cost classes in everything from robotics to woodworking to programming, and together we will fulfill a larger mission of providing a new kind of education to as many kids as we can.

This will be a place to educate teachers and mentors so they can join us in our work to create a generation of creative innovators who know how to build with their hands, adapt new technology, and value sustainability. We are building a place for kids and their families to experiment, ask questions, build confidence, think big and create BIG.

Our Budget: So what do we need to make this happen? Here's how we have come up with our target goal:

We are seeking to develop new programs and badges, support initiatives of affordability and accessibility, and assist us in the collaborative work we do with community partners at local and national levels. Materials and prototype costs: $9500

Equipment and technology (soldering irons, laser cutter, 3D printer, woodshop, textile and electronics lab, projector for classes, laptops, etc): $19,000

Space improvements, furniture, and code compliance, including venting for laser cutter $6500

This will give us a great start in serving our communities, both locally and nationally!

Thank you for your support! The Hacker Scouts Team, Leaders, Volunteers, and Families.

Our Programs: A variety of experts and mentors from the community ensure a well rounded and high level of attention and skill building for all ages through accessible programs that meet the different needs of our young makers. Hacker Scouts provides open source material and a support program for Hacker Scout programs globally. We currently have over 30 programs running nationally, and are expanding internationally this fall.

 Our current programs include:

Open Lab: Public, all ages workshop designed to expose kids to new skills and concepts while promoting family and community engagement.

Guild: A weekly membership based program for kids 8 through teens that supports building knowledge and skills through self-direction and mentorship. Includes our foundation project, the Hackerling Circuit, and an extensive offering of Badges that allow kids to pursue their own interests and goals.

Sparks: A weekly membership based program for kids ages 4 through 7 that explores concepts and skills and encourages independent thinking.

More about the rewards:
Stickers, badges and tshirts all feature our Hacker Scouts robot logo on a black background. They really stand out!

The mold-making class will include the fundamentals of moldmaking using milled metal casting plates and produce plastic robot heads (the robot on our logo) that have an LED light inside, when you insert a battery- they light up! If you also want you child to participate in the mold-making class, let us know!

The VIP Open Lab will include at least 3 activities and covers the materials for one person for each of those activities. You can bring up to 4 people to learn new concepts and skills!

The Hackerling Circuit is our foundational Guild project. It includes all the components (board, Arduino, enclosure, etc) to make your very own!

The private class on a skill or tool will include sewing, laser cutter, CNC, soldering, and 3D printing. You choose, we teach!

The Hackerling Circuit private class includes a Hackerling Circuit for you and a friend and guided instruction on building your own Arduino, from soldering to programming to making a custom enclosure on the laser cutter!

Birthday Party/Workshop will be held at the new Oakland space and we will give you a choice of activities.

The VIP Dinner will be held in Oakland, and the date will be determined by the availability of our guests, most likely in the new year. Join us for an amazing evening with prominent inventors, entrepreneurs, and enthusiastic Makers!

Finally, our highest reward gets you a Founder, who will fly out and personally teach a workshop (we will decide together on the subject)! This includes domestic travel costs. We are willing to travel internationally, but will need those extra costs covered.
Thanks again for your support!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The main challenges we face with this project include permitting and expediency with an all volunteer staff. We have already done extensive research on what we need as well as made supportive contacts with the City Of Oakland to ensure our process goes smoothly. We also have a proven track record, and every one of our volunteers is fully committed to this project.

FAQ

  • Yes they did, though no lawsuit has been filed. You can read more about it on our blog, but currently we are waiting for a response to our request for a compromise. We will update everyone as soon as we have a decision, but our board is taking this matter seriously and any action we take will be based on whether or not it is in service to our mission and our kids.
    Update 9/24/13:
We have made a decision regarding this issue. You can read about it here:

  • No. This money is to fund our project. We have accomplished pro bono lawyers working on our behalf and do not anticipate any actions that would assume any further legals costs. All the money from this Kickstarter will go to building an amazing makerspace for families in Oakland.

  • It will be your choice! When the time comes we will produce both and we will ask you your preference!

  • We have been running this organization for a year and have gone from one program in one location to 3 programs in over 30 locations around the US. Every member of our team has a background in either starting their own successful non profits or companies, and/or currently holds management positions in successful companies. We have also all been members of a hackerspace or other similar organizations for years, including holding decision making/leadership positions, and we know what works and what doesn’t. This combined with our expertise in working with children is a great combination. We know what we have to do and how to do it, and we know how to find the answers to new challenges.
