Gearworks is a steampunk strategy card game featuring card placement, hand management, and a "twist" on area control. Strategically position your gears to fix a mysterious clockwork machine in the corner of the workshop.
Collect parts and build fantastical contraptions! Will the other tinkerers sabotage your efforts or will you earn the workshop owner's favor and become the master tinkerer?
- Puzzle-y. Players say it feels like Sudoku.
- Accessible to gamers and non-gamers alike.
- Unique in game mechanics and experience.
On your turn, play a gear card into an empty space in the play area.
There are two placement rules. (1) Each column can only have one card of each color. (2) The cards in each row must be in either ascending or descending numerical order.
Rotate the gear tokens in the corresponding column and row to point your player color toward the card you played.
Gain sparks by tinkering! You can choose any 2 of the cards closest to your played card in each of the four directions, then add them together or subtract one from the other. If the result equals the value of your played card, gain 1 spark. Sparks can be used to draw extra cards or even play on top of other cards.
At the end of the round, collect parts for each column or row with your color pointed toward the play area. You can use them to build fantastical contraptions.
The game lasts 3 rounds. At the end of the game, score points for contraptions you built, unused parts, and sparks.
- Limited content. Playmat and Deluxe Edition will NOT be sold through distribution.
- Be in the game! Your name can be on a contraption card or you can also create your own contraption card!
- Receive the game first. Receive Gearworks at least a month before the retail release.
We've selected reputable logistics partners around the world to ensure you receive your games safely and in a timely manner. This project is EU, AU, CA, and US friendly. This means that rewards bound to those regions ship from within their respective regions so backers in those regions will not pay any VAT, customs, or duties on their games.
We're offering a $10 shipping subsidy to all backers from our actual shipping charges. Backers in the following regions pay the remaining shipping charges as follows:
- US: $0 USD
- UK, Canada: $6 USD
- EU, Iceland, Japan, Norway, Switzerland: $8 USD
- Australia: $10 USD
- Rest of World: $15 USD
There is no additional shipping charge for the playmat (it is included in the $20). If you'd like to pledge for more than 1 copy of Gearworks, backers in the US/EU/CA/UK can pay for up to 8 items total (games and/or playmats) with no additional shipping charges. For backers in other regions or for more than 8 items, please message us for a shipping quote.
We'd also like to thank:
- Keith Matejka: art direction, game development and product development.
- Kane Klenko: art direction.
- Dustin Schwartz: rulebook editing.
- Ferdinand, The Cardboard Stacker: Kickstarter video animation.
- Mark Manning: Kickstarter video voiceover.
We love local game stores! If you are interested in carrying Gearworks, please back at the Retailer pledge level and we will be in touch after the campaign. Buying direct from us is the only way to get the Deluxe Edition and the Playmat. If you have any questions, feel free to email games [at] piecekeepergames [dot] com.
Risks and challenges
As with any board game production, there are always risks related to manufacturing issues, production delays, freight delays, and shipping damages (among other risks). However, we have done our best to minimize the potential risks prior to launching this project. We delivered our first Kickstarter project, Flag Dash, two months early.
The gameplay is complete after conducting blind playtesting with over 100 players around the world. We have our final manufacturing quotes in hand and the pre-production files are 95% complete for all content currently in the game. We have also been working closely with our global logistics partners to ensure a timely and safe delivery of your games.
Please know that our primary goals are transparency with you, our backers, and high product quality. We will keep you informed each step of the way - both concerning good and bad news. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback, we'd love to hear from you in the comments, via Kickstarter message, or email at games [at] piecekeepergames [dot] com.
Thank you for your interest in Gearworks and PieceKeeper Games!
