About

         E N T R A N C E   IS A FEATURE-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY EXPLORING CONTEMPORARY DANCE AND THE RHYTHMS OF AFRO-BRAZILIAN SACRED CULTURE IN SALVADOR DE BAHIA, BRAZIL.

Cacau Nascimento - Historian. Cachoeira, Bahia
Cacau Nascimento - Historian. Cachoeira, Bahia

The documentary portrays through a poetical, yet realistic eye, Bahia’s capital Salvador and its vibrant culture's melting of beliefs and masterfully crafted sounds that echo their African roots.

Afro-Brazilian contemporary forms of dance are deeply influenced by the sacred arts, in particular by the iconography and practice of the Candomblé religion. Rituals and movement have been the ways in which people have gathered to practice and renew sacred wisdom and healing, through rigorous rhythmic codes and dances for centuries. E N T R A N C E explores the web of connection between myth, personal and collective history, and the power of Axè (literally "Life force energy).

We have been guided to discover Bahia's cultural and natural landscapes by some of its most relevant cultural gatekeepers: artists, dance masters, historians and craftsmen, who have incredible stories to tell and whose wisdom speaks deeply to our hearts. We are forever grateful for their guidance, kindness and open heart. E N T R A N C E pays homage to their legacy, humbleness and embodied wisdom.

 An initial part of the documentary has been produced in January 2018, as we travelled to Salvador and recorded interviews, images, and sounds. To be able to complete the production, we are now planning to be in Bahia at the end of January 2019 for a month. During this time, we will produce video and scoring in the city of Salvador, and we will explore Chapada Diamantina's natural landscapes, recording the intricate sounds of the plant kingdom.

There is a big effort into creating this documentary. In order to avoid cultural appropriation by those of us on the team who are not local, we aim to portray the contradiction of liberation through the art of movement and the reality of social inequality, prejudice and stigma that persists today in Brazil.

 WHO ARE WE?

We are a group of artists, friends who share a strong commitment and passion to multidisciplinary forms of knowledge and social activism, believing in the power of creative expression to unify and re-write narratives. Each of us has experienced the culture of Bahia in different moments and ways. We have come together to create a film that reflects the profound impact it has had on us, and that can be given back to its protagonists as a gift they can share with their loved ones. A part of the proceeds of the crowdfunding is donated to the cerimonial spaces and the people that have been so kind to welcome us.

Francesca Mariano (Italy)

E N T R A N C E DIRECTOR

Francesca is a movement artist and independent researcher from Italy. She obtained a Masters degree in International Relations at the University of Sussex in Brighton (UK), where she focused on ecology, gender studies and post-colonialism through the lenses of comparative mythology. Her performative and ethnographic research on movement and ritual focuses on dance as a symbolic dialogue with one's inner realms and layers of awareness. Her interest lies in the psychosomatic effects of movement and in how dance’s poetic language allows the body to become a vessel for inner strength, Self-discovery and evolution. She has trained with master choreographers Rosangela Silvestre and Vera Passos in Salvador de Bahia, whose work has had transformative effects on her approach to movement and healing.

OUR DEEPEST GRATITUDE FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE CREATION OF THIS PROJECT! WE HAVE SET THE GOAL TO THE VERY MINIMUM REQUIRED,

We are raising funds to be able to cover some of the production expenses while filming and recording in Brazil:

  • A financial contribution to the performers who take time to prepare their artwork to be filmed;
  • A financial contribution to the cerimonial spaces;
  • Renting a vehicle to move around Bahia with our equipment;
  • Cover some of food and accomodation expenses.

WITH LOVE,

E N T R A N C E team

Risks and challenges

The challenges that come with the making of this project are both practical and mental.
On a practical level, we will visit and film some places in nature where it is important to have a vehicle and shelter in order to feel secured where there is no phone signal, specifically in certain paths of Chapada Diamantina.
On a mental level, those of us who do not come from Bahia are undergoing a deep analysis of our cultural imprint and privilege as European citizens, the mark of colonialism and the problem of cultural appropriation.
