A Brief Overview of Jason and The Crawdad King
A Snuggle Up Bedtime Story. Jason who always loved going down to the water to visit his animal friends. But one day his whole life changed after he came across a tangled up crawdad in desperate need of his help. Upon freeing the crustacean, Jason asked of no reward from his new, talking friend. The crawdad was so struck by the boy's natural and unassuming kindness that he promised the boy many wonders in his dreams that night.
Sure enough, later that night, Jason was invited to a world under the water, a world of dreams and imagination. The Crawdad King welcomed Jason to the kingdom and treated him like an old friend, an important guest in his court. Jason saw many wonders and learned of another world he never knew existed until then. Before he left, the Crawdad King offered him a special gift for his compassion at the shore earlier that day.
Join Jason on this adventure and learn a few things about treating others with kindness, giving a helping hand wherever it may be needed. You just might discover another magical world if you do!
What’s the Story About?
Jason, the young explorer, drifts down a river of wonder. While floating along, he saves a crawdad who turns out to be an enchanted king. Later that night in his dreams and in return for his kindness, the king opens the doors to Jason's spectacular imagination. A wonderful gift he will never forget!
In our opinion, no children’s story is complete without a moral. After all, we’re the grown ups. Who else is going to teach children the guiding principles of life? So the story doesn’t stop there. In Jason and the Crawdad King there is a lesson to be learned.
This magical adventure unveils the rewards of compassion with the discovery of creativity. Jason learns that by opening his heart, by caring for someone else, he is rewarded in his inner world. It’s the gift of his creative imagination; a vibrant kingdom young children understand very well. And something, we as adults, can help them discover, develop and nurture.
What are the Final Products?
In print, the book will be an 8” x 10” Joey Dee Light storytelling amphitheater and Lili Avakem visual museum. But we won’t stop there. You can also expect ebooks, stuffed animals, playful merchandise, and hopefully a treasure trove of audios and videos.
Why Your Kids will Love this Book!

What are the Critics saying so far?
“A charming and delicious book…definitely a keeper.”
Jason and the Crawdad King is well written and imaginative tale. It inspires a desire to join Jason on his adventure and float down the river. My kindergarten-aged niece was enamored with the story and wanted to touch the illustrations to see if she could feel the water. It’s sure to be a favorite bedtime story for children. It captures the attention with its positive message and flowing, rhythmic story.

How did this book happen?
On accident. Last summer, Joey was whitewater kayaking down a familiar stretch of river, when he happened on a crawdad, tangled up in an abandon fishing line. After meticulously unwinding the little fellow and setting him free, Joey's wife Tamara and a friend both said, “Hey, that would make a great children’s story.” Joey agreed. The next morning, he wrote Jason and the Crawdad King in a coffee shop on the back of a few napkins.
Who Spins the Magic?
Two words: Lili Avakem…and Joey. (Okay, four words).
After Joey decided he had a viable story on his hands, he went on the search for an illustrator. Since it was his first children’s book, he approached student illustrators. He soon learned that students are…well…students. Next he tried freelancer.com. That’s how he met Lili. Bingo!
Ever since then, it’s been a magic carpet ride. There's only two words he can think of to describe this wonderful experience and that's ‘creative synergy’. It seems like everything they put their collective energy into, produces a result far beyond the sum of their individual parts. It’s like magic. They've never experienced anything quite like it. With the recent addition of Marc, Rachel and Robert at Golden Bell Entertainment's Publishing Division, Polar Press, who knows what great things can continue to happen?
Joey Dee Light (aka Joseph Drumheller) is a three-time award winning author with works in non-fiction, fiction and now children’s books. Lili Avakem is a fabulous Persian-born illustrator, raised and educated in Tehran, Iran. With over 10 years of graphic design experience, she’s learned to unwrap her gift of color in every project she touches. She hangs her hat and magic wand in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, California.
